The McLaren W1 is the third model in the brand's '1' series of ultimate supercars, following the legendary McLaren F1 (1992) and the McLaren P1 (2013). The car was unveiled on October 6, 2024, exactly 50 years to the day since McLaren won its first F1 World Championship, making it highly symbolic.

The heart of the McLaren W1 is an all-new 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo engine (codenamed MHP-8), paired with an E-module electric motor and battery. The hybrid system produces a colossal 1,275 PS and 1,340 Nm of torque. The combustion engine alone generates 920 PS, while the electric motor contributes 347 PS.

It does 0-100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 5.8 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 350 km/h. It is faster than the legendary F1 and P1, and even quicker around a track than the track-focused McLaren Senna.

It is very light. The McLaren W1 has a minimum dry weight of just 1,399 kg. It uses an all-new 'McLaren Aerocell' carbon fibre monocoque, which manages to be incredibly light despite being longer than the P1. The chassis is dictated entirely by aerodynamics, featuring raised floors to create ground effect tunnels, a design rarely seen on a road-legal car.

The McLaren W1 is only the second road-legal car to use "ground effect" aerodynamics. In 'Race Mode', the car lowers, and the active front splitter and the 'McLaren Active Long Tail' rear wing deploy. This rear wing extends backwards by 300mm, and its angle is adjusted by four electric motors, generating a staggering 1,000 kg of downforce.

The McLaren W1's 4.0-litre V8 is a high-revving engine, with a redline of 9,200 rpm. To create an exciting soundtrack, McLaren's engineers used technology like equal-length exhaust manifolds, so that the engine builds to a dramatic crescendo as it approaches the redline. Importantly, this is achieved purely through the hardware, with no artificial sound generation.

In this era of thousand-horsepower hypercars, the McLaren W1 sticks with rear-wheel drive, and features a purely mechanical hydraulic steering system. Its suspension uses F1-derived technology, featuring 3D-printed titanium components and a highly sophisticated active chassis control system to ensure the massive power is delivered with precision and safety.

The interior is very race-car like. The most unique feature is the fixed seat, which is integrated directly into the carbon fibre monocoque and cannot be moved forwards or backwards. The solution to find your perfect driving position is that the pedals and steering wheel move electrically to meet the driver. This is a design from top-tier motorsport, saving weight and lowering the centre of gravity.

The hybrid system in the McLaren W1 is designed for ultimate performance, not electric range. Its tiny battery has a capacity of just 1.384 kWh. While it does have an EV mode for silent manoeuvring around the neighbourhood, its all-electric range is only about 2.6 km. The system is designed to keep enough charge for on-track performance and uses the electric motor for reverse.

The McLaren W1 is limited to just 399 units worldwide, with a starting price of £2 million (approx. HK$20 million) before taxes and options. According to the local dealer, Hong Kong has been allocated 6 units. Most importantly, the entire production run was sold out before the car was even officially revealed. So, while Hong Kong is fortunate to have 6 units, it is now impossible to buy a new allocation on the open market.
