Model Overview

The FANGCHENGBAO BAO 5 is the debut production model from FANGCHENGBAO, BYD's specialised and personalised sub-brand, positioned as a new energy rugged mid-size off-road SUV. Built on BYD's DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) Super Hybrid Platform, the vehicle represents BYD's strategic foray into the hardcore off-road segment, marking the first in-depth integration of electric drive technology with a ladder-frame chassis.

The BAO 5 officially broke cover in August 2023 before making its market launch in Beijing on 9 November of the same year. In October 2025, the Long Range Edition was introduced with substantially increased battery capacity and electric range. On 13 May 2026, the BAO 5 Flash Charge Edition was rolled out, featuring the second-generation Blade Battery and ultra-fast charging technology. As of early 2026, the on-sale BAO 5 line-up comprises the 2025 Smart Driving Edition, Long Range Edition, and 2026 Flash Charge Edition, priced between RM239,800 and RM329,800 (recommended retail price); the Long Range Edition retails at RM269,800-RM329,800, whilst the Flash Charge Edition starts from RM259,800. In the domestic market, it rivals contenders such as the TANK 300 Hi4-T, TANK 400 Hi4-T, and DEEPAL G318.

Design Language

The BAO 5 adopts a classic boxy, rugged off-road silhouette defined by sharp, clean body lines that convey an assertive stance. The front fascia features a rectangular radiator grille seamlessly integrated with the flanking headlamp clusters, accented with horizontal chrome elements and a central brand emblem. The chunky front bumper incorporates durable, unpainted black scratch-resistant cladding, paired with a silver skid plate and red recovery hooks.

Along the flanks, the profile remains squared-off and muscular, accentuated by pronounced flared wheel arches. Protective black plastic cladding lines the wheel arches and side skirts to reinforce its off-road DNA whilst safeguarding the paintwork on rough terrains. The flat roofline maximises interior headroom. At the rear, the rugged aesthetic continues with a side-hinged tailgate and an externally mounted full-size spare tyre, complemented by vertically stacked tail lamp clusters.

In terms of dimensions, the BAO 5 measures 4,890 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, configured as a five-seater mid-size SUV. Minimum ground clearance under full load stands at 310 mm for the DiSus Edition and 220 mm for standard variants. Exterior paint options include Vatnajökull Glacier Blue, Dolomites Mountain Green, Peak Grey, Night Shadow Black, and Warm Breeze White.

Inside, the cabin strikes a balance between robust utility and modern digital refinement. The centre console houses a 15.6-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment display, a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch front passenger entertainment screen in a three-display configuration. It is equipped with a flat-bottom four-spoke steering wheel and an electronic gear selector. Rectangular air vents mirror the exterior design theme. The seats are trimmed in Nappa leather, with the front seats featuring power adjustment, ventilation, heating, and massage functions. Interior colourways include Eclipse Blue, Shallow Beach Green, and Dune Brown.

Powertrain and Performance

The BAO 5 is powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain comprising a longitudinally mounted 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and dual front and rear electric motors. Chassis and Handling

The BAO 5 features a non-load-bearing ladder-frame chassis, a hallmark of true off-road vehicles. Both front and rear axles utilise double-wishbone independent suspension—an uncommon layout in this segment that ensures off-road wheel articulation and traction while significantly improving on-road handling dynamics and ride comfort.

Higher-spec variants are equipped with the DiSus-P Standard Edition Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, allowing active damping and ride height adjustments to balance on-road refinement with trail capability. The DiSus Edition boasts a ground clearance of 310 mm, an approach angle of 39°, a departure angle of 34°, a ramp breakover angle of 27°, and a maximum wading depth of 790 mm; non-DiSus variants offer an approach angle of 35°, departure angle of 32°, breakover angle of 20°, and a ground clearance of 220 mm.

Drivetrain duties are handled by an electric AWD system featuring a standard rear axle mechanical differential lock and an electronic centre lock across all trims. Mid-to-high variants add a front axle differential lock, supporting Low-Range 4WD (4L) mode and the Bao Turn feature (which significantly tightens the turning radius by braking the inner rear wheel). Factory-certified towing homologation is standard, with a braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg.

Braking is managed by ventilated discs front and rear with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). Standard tyre dimensions are 265/65 R18, with 18-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels available, alongside the tailgate-mounted full-size spare wheel.

Cabin and Equipment

The BAO 5 runs on the DiLink 150 smart cockpit operating system, anchored by the 15.6-inch floating central display and supported by the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch passenger entertainment screen. The system supports 5G connectivity, Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, four-zone voice command, and HUAWEI HiCar smartphone integration. Audio is provided by a premium Devialet sound system with up to 18 speakers, including driver headrest-integrated units on select variants.

Standard convenience and comfort amenities across the range include an openable panoramic glass roof, 50W wireless smartphone charging, power-adjustable front seats with heating/ventilation/massage, heated and ventilated rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, an onboard air purification system, and multi-colour ambient lighting. Modular ecosystem mounting ports on the front seatbacks allow direct attachment of BYD PAD pivoting brackets for rear-seat entertainment.

The 2025 Long Range Edition sees minor equipment revisions: the headrest speakers, 50-inch HUD (downsized to 26 inches), and heat pump climate control were omitted, while adding a front passenger ottoman leg rest, second-row power seat adjustments, and active dynamic ambient lighting.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

In terms of active safety, the BAO 5 comes standard with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Traction Control System (TCS), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). High-spec models add advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Door Opening Warning (DOW), and Front and Rear Collision Warning.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are a standout highlight for the BAO 5, offered across two hardware tiers:

  • "God's Eye C" (DiPilot 100): Fitted to entry and mid-tier variants, this vision-based setup is powered by an NVIDIA Orin-N chip (84 TOPS computing power), supporting Highway Navigation-guided Pilot, automated parking assist, remote parking, and memory parking.

  • "God's Eye B" (DiPilot 300): Equipped on high-spec LiDAR variants (including Qiankun Editions), featuring a roof-mounted LiDAR unit that enables full-scenario autonomous navigation, including Urban Navigation-guided Pilot, Highway Navigation-guided Pilot, and automated lane change assist.

Furthermore, the vehicle can be specified with the HUAWEI Qiankun ADS 4.0 system (2025 Qiankun Edition) built on the WEWA technical architecture, featuring the CAS 4.0 Collision Avoidance System.

On the passive safety front, front dual airbags, front side airbags, and full-length curtain airbags are standard across the range. The 2025 Long Range Edition removes the driver's knee airbag but adds a front centre airbag. The body shell uses a high-strength cage structure to meet stringent crash safety standards.

Market Performance and Reception

Since its market entry, the FANGCHENGBAO BAO 5 has undergone a steady turnaround from modest initial sales to stable market performance. Following its late-2023 launch, monthly deliveries hovered around 2,000 to 3,000 units. In July 2024, the brand executed a strategic RM50,000 price repositioning across the board, adjusting the range to RM239,800-RM302,800, which promptly boosted market demand and stabilized monthly volume at 4,000 to 5,000 units. In 2025, total annual deliveries reached 59,836 units, peaking at 8,777 units in December 2025.

Heading into 2026, the additions of the Long Range Edition and Flash Charge Edition have further broadened the line-up. Nevertheless, first-quarter sales in 2026 saw a slight pullback. Automotive industry observers note that established rivals such as the TANK 300 Hi4-T and TANK 400 Hi4-T maintain strong brand loyalty in the hardcore off-road segment, requiring the BAO 5 to continually refine its product and pricing strategies to maintain momentum.

In terms of owner feedback and media reviews, praise for the BAO 5 centres on several key strengths: the DMO platform's electric off-road architecture effectively unifies a ladder-frame chassis, front and rear double-wishbone suspension, and electric AWD, outperforming conventional ICE off-roaders in throttle response, fuel economy, and on-road comfort; the 4.8-second century sprint places it among the quickest in its class; the DiSus-P hydraulic suspension strikes a commendable balance between wheel travel and tarmac composure; and the 6 kW V2L external power supply adds genuine practicality for camping enthusiasts. Conversely, criticisms point to: the decoupled electric AWD system's real-world recovery capabilities in extreme rock crawling and low-grip snow/ice conditions remaining a topic of debate against mechanical locking 4WD setups; specific equipment alterations (such as omitting the knee airbag and downscaling the HUD in the 2025 Long Range Edition) drawing scrutiny; and the early RM50,000 official price cut causing dissatisfaction among early adopters, which initially dented brand goodwill.

Overall, the FANGCHENGBAO BAO 5 stands as BYD's benchmark product in the rugged off-road arena. Harnessing the DMO Super Hybrid Platform, DiSus-P Intelligent Body Control System, and independent double-wishbone suspension, it has set a clear technical standard for electrified off-road SUVs. While retaining quintessential hardcore attributes like a ladder-frame chassis, differential locks, and an external spare wheel, it leverages electrification to lower running costs and improve everyday drivability. For buyers seeking serious off-road capability without sacrificing urban refinement, the BAO 5 presents a compelling dual-purpose proposition bridging genuine trail performance and family practicality.
