Blade Battery

2026-10-19 22:50:00

Blade Battery is a next-generation lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology introduced by BYD in 2020. Its key innovation lies in the battery cell form factor—re-engineering conventional, bulky prismatic cells into longer, thinner "blade-like" structures. Through advanced structural optimisation, it significantly boosts space utilisation and safety within the battery pack. The Blade Battery is not an entirely new battery chemistry, as it remains fundamentally an LFP battery using lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) as the cathode material; however, its revolutionary structural design effectively overcomes the inherent energy density limitations of traditional LFP batteries.

Core Technical Principles

Conventional EV traction battery packs rely on a three-tier "Cell → Module → Pack" assembly structure, yielding a space utilisation rate of only around 40% to 50%, with significant volume consumed by module housings, structural brackets, and cooling components. The Blade Battery employs CTP (Cell-to-Pack) technology, completely skipping the intermediate module stage to integrate blade-shaped cells directly into the battery pack casing, allowing the cells themselves to serve as structural members.

This design delivers two major advantages. Substantially improved space utilisation: While conventional packs with stacked cylindrical or prismatic cells suffer from excessive dead space, the closely packed blade cells—coupled with the removal of module hardware—increase internal volume utilisation from 40%–50% to 60%–80%, delivering an EV driving range boost of over 50%. Significantly enhanced structural rigidity: The vertically arrayed blade cells are anchored to the pack’s structural frame to form a rigid structure similar to an aluminium honeycomb panel. Capable of withstanding a maximum load of 445 kN—equivalent to the weight of a 45-tonne truck—the cells effectively act as the structural "backbone" of the battery pack.

Safety Advantages

The standout highlight of the Blade Battery is its exceptional safety credentials. The nail penetration test is widely regarded as one of the most stringent benchmarks in EV battery safety, simulating an internal short circuit caused by foreign object intrusion. In BYD’s comparative testing across three battery types, standard ternary lithium-ion batteries caught fire violently with surface temperatures exceeding 500°C; conventional block-type LFP batteries produced smoke without open flames, reaching 200°C to 400°C; whereas the Blade Battery emitted no smoke and produced no open flames, with surface temperatures remaining between just 30°C and 60°C.

The Blade Battery’s safety edge comes down to two factors: first, the inherent thermal stability of LFP chemistry is vastly superior to ternary materials; second, the elongated, slim cell architecture creates a longer short-circuit path and a significantly larger surface area for heat dissipation, allowing rapid cooling during an internal short circuit to prevent thermal runaway.

Second-Generation Blade Battery

On 5 March 2026, BYD officially unveiled the second-generation Blade Battery, bringing comprehensive upgrades across charging speed, energy density, service life, and overall safety.

Groundbreaking charging performance: Under ambient room temperatures, charging from 10% to 70% state of charge (SoC) takes just 5 minutes, while going from 10% to 97% SoC takes only 9 minutes—touted as "ready in 5 minutes, full in 9". Even in extreme sub-zero conditions of -30°C, a 20% to 97% SoC charge takes under 12 minutes, merely 3 minutes longer than in normal conditions. This breakthrough was achieved by overhauling four key levels—materials, electrodes, cells, and systems—establishing an ultra-fast "lithium-ion highway" alongside an intelligent all-temperature thermal management system.

Simultaneous gains in energy density and durability: Alongside ultra-fast flash charging capability, the second-generation Blade Battery delivers an energy density increase of over 5% compared to its predecessor. In the Denza Z9GT, this battery delivers a driving range of up to 1,036 km. The warranty terms have also been bolstered, raising the overall capacity retention benchmark by 2.5% and offering a lifetime cell warranty.

Safety testing exceeding industry standards: While China's new national standard mandates passing a short-circuit test after 300 fast-charge cycles, the second-generation Blade Battery underwent nail penetration testing after completing 500 ultra-fast flash-charging cycles without any fire or explosion. In thermal runaway propagation tests, deliberately triggering short circuits in 4 adjacent cells simultaneously resulted in zero thermal spread, while its bottom-impact resistance exceeded the national safety standard by 10 times.

Alongside the second-generation Blade Battery, BYD introduced its "Flash Charge China" strategic initiative. The plan targets the deployment of 20,000 flash-charging stations by the end of 2026, comprising 18,000 urban charging hubs providing 5 km coverage across 90% of city areas, and 2,000 highway hubs covering nearly one-third of expressway service areas, all powered by ultra-fast chargers delivering up to 1,500 kW per connector.
