2026-10-09 10:30:00

The TANK 400 Hi4-T is a mid-to-large urban mecha-styled off-road SUV from Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) TANK marque. Slotted between the TANK 300 and TANK 500, it is engineered to satisfy dual demands for daily urban driving and serious off-road capability, combining a bold "mecha aesthetic" with GWM's proprietary Hi4-T off-road super hybrid architecture.

Vehicle Overview

The TANK 400 Hi4-T has established strong market recognition thanks to its distinctive exterior styling and robust mechanical off-road capability.

Market Highlights: Mid-to-large off-road SUV, Hi4-T hybrid architecture, mecha-inspired styling, ladder-frame chassis.

Product Core: At the heart of the vehicle is GWM’s Hi4-T off-road super hybrid powertrain, pairing a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with a longitudinal 9HAT automatic transmission and an integrated P2 electric motor to deliver an ideal balance of power and efficiency. Genuine all-terrain performance is anchored by mechanical differential locks, a body-on-frame ladder chassis, and a high-strength steel body shell, blending contemporary urban appeal with dedicated 4x4 capability.

Market Positioning: Officially priced between RM270,000 and RM300,000 (depending on the variant), it targets younger, affluent drivers who appreciate bold mecha styling, require high-performance off-road capability, and prioritise daily urban ride comfort.

Development History

Background: Amid the growing popularity of 4x4 overland lifestyle vehicles and the rapid adoption of new energy vehicle (NEV) technology, the TANK marque introduced the TANK 400 to plug the mid-to-large hardcore SUV segment, leveraging hybridisation to enhance fuel economy during daily commutes.

Key Milestones:

September 2023: The TANK 400 Hi4-T officially went on sale in two trim levels—Functional Edition and Super Edition—quickly capturing the attention of off-road enthusiasts.

2024: Clinched the "Best 4WD Off-Road Performance Vehicle" award at the 4th China Automotive Fengyun Awards, recognised for its formidable four-wheel-drive capability and robust architecture.

2026: The TANK 400 lineup expanded further. Alongside the existing Hi4-T version, the brand introduced premium variants powered by the Hi4-Z architecture, significantly boosting pure electric range and DC fast-charging speeds while reinforcing its all-scenario urban-and-off-road versatility.

Market Performance

The TANK 400 Hi4-T continues to demonstrate strong market competitiveness in the hardcore 4x4 segment.

Competitive Landscape: In this market space, the TANK 400 Hi4-T distinguishes itself from conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) off-roaders and rival hybrid SUVs through its distinctive mecha design and dependable mechanicals. Backed by high brand loyalty and a proven reputation for being able to tackle rough terrain and bring occupants home safely, it has become a go-to choice for long-distance overland expeditions.

Owner Feedback: Driver satisfaction centres primarily around its commanding road presence, seamless power delivery, and comprehensive off-road equipment. Although its ladder-frame chassis contributes to a heavier kerb weight, the instant electric motor response effectively eliminates lag, offering a noticeably lighter, more effortless driving feel in city traffic compared to traditional 4x4s.

Core Technologies

Hi4-T Architecture: Combines a 2.0-litre Miller-cycle turbocharged petrol engine with a 9HAT dedicated hybrid transmission and a high-torque P2 electric motor. Supporting Pure Electric, Hybrid, and Intelligent drive modes, the system ensures strong power delivery while maintaining commendable fuel economy even under low battery state of charge (SOC).

Off-Road Hardware: Equipped with triple mechanical differential locks alongside dedicated off-road features like Tank Turn and Crawl Control. The suspension setup comprises a double-wishbone front and a solid rear axle, with selected variants featuring adaptive electromagnetic dampers for improved on-road composure and robust articulation off-road.

Safety & Protection: The passenger safety cell employs ultra-high-strength steel engineered to rigorous crash standards. The traction battery pack features submarine-grade waterproof sealing, 24/7 active monitoring, and millisecond-level high-voltage disconnect protection to ensure total electrical safety in demanding off-road conditions.

Future Plans

As of June 2026, the TANK brand’s development roadmap for the 400 series centres on:

Architecture Diversification: Introducing the high-performance Hi4-Z platform to boost WLTC pure electric driving range to 200 km, meeting the demand for zero-emissions urban commuting.

Intelligent Upgrades: Accelerating the rollout of LiDAR hardware and advanced driver assistance systems (Highway and Urban NOA Navigation on Autopilot), utilising smart algorithms to flatten the learning curve for novice off-road drivers.

All-Terrain Refinement: Continuously fine-tuning powertrain and chassis calibrations for extreme conditions such as high-altitude plateaus and desert dunes, pushing the vehicle's extreme terrain passability even further.
