Parking

2026-10-21 04:40:00

Parking (Vehicle Stopping) refers to the final driving phase where a driver brings a moving or decelerating vehicle to a complete standstill and properly secures it through the coordinated operation of the service brake and parking brake systems. As the concluding step of any journey, proper parking not only ensures absolute safety while the vehicle remains stationary, but also maintains smooth traffic flow and preserves the long-term lifespan of mechanical components.

Core Attributes and Dynamic Principles

Zeroing kinetic energy and mechanically locking gravitational potential energy: The core principle of parking is to fully eliminate all vehicle kinetic energy down to zero. On level roads, this relies on the dual engagement of the footbrake and parking brake; on slopes or inclines, the mechanical handbrake (or Electronic Parking Brake / EPB) and the gearbox parking pawl ('P' gear) must be engaged to counter gravitational forces and prevent roll-away.

Coordinated functions of service brake and parking brake: The service brake (footbrake) handles deceleration and bringing the vehicle to a halt while in motion, whereas the parking brake (handbrake) keeps the vehicle stationary over prolonged periods. Both play distinct, indispensable roles.

Golden Rules and Step-by-Step Procedures for Standard Parking

Depending on whether the stop is temporary or for complete shutdown, standard parking procedures are divided into two operational protocols: "Temporary Kerbside Parking" and "Full Parking & Engine Shutdown":

Procedure 1: Temporary Kerbside Parking (Temporary Stopping)

Check mirrors and indicate:

Check the rear-view and right wing mirrors, signal right in advance once clear, and smoothly pull the vehicle over towards the right side of the road.

Smoothly decelerate to a complete stop:

Depress the footbrake to bring the vehicle smoothly to a dead stop, keeping your right foot firmly pressed on the brake pedal to prevent roll-away.

Engage the parking brake:

Pull up the mechanical handbrake or engage the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), and only release the footbrake once the parking brake is fully locked.

Stay alert and ready to move off:

For temporary stops where the driver remains behind the wheel, keep the engine idling with the right indicator on or switch on the hazard lights, staying prepared to react to sudden traffic changes.

Procedure 2: Full Parking & Engine Shutdown

Come to a complete stop and engage parking brake:

Once the car has come to a complete standstill with your right foot holding the brake pedal down, pull the handbrake up firmly (or verify that the EPB has engaged automatically).

Shift to Park / Neutral:

Automatic models: Shift the gear lever from 'D' into 'P' (Park);

Manual models: Shift the gear lever back into Neutral.

Switch off electricals and shut down the engine:

Switch off high-draw electrical components such as headlamps, air conditioning (air-con), and the infotainment system, then press the start button or turn the key to shut down the engine and cut power.

Release footbrake, remove key, and lock vehicle:

After ensuring the vehicle load is securely held by the handbrake and 'P' gear, gently release the footbrake, then remove the key (or lock up and leave).

High-Risk Parking Mistakes and Mechanical Care

The costly mistake of shifting to 'P' before engaging the handbrake on slopes:

When parking on an incline, shifting into 'P' before releasing the footbrake places the vehicle's entire gravitational load onto the fingernail-sized parking pawl inside the transmission. This makes pulling the gear selector out of 'P' extremely stiff when setting off next time (often accompanied by a harsh mechanical clunk) and causes severe long-term wear to the gearbox.

Correct sequence: Stop completely -> Pull handbrake firmly (allow brake to bear vehicle weight) -> Shift into 'P'.

Never pull the handbrake abruptly or shift into 'P' while in motion:

At high speeds, accidentally pulling the mechanical handbrake or forcing the gear lever into 'P' can instantly lock up the rear wheels or transmission, triggering severe skidding, fishtailing, or even roll-over accidents. The parking brake and 'P' position are strictly designed as safety measures for an absolute standstill.
