Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology refers to the capability of discharging electrical energy stored in an electric vehicle's (EV) high-voltage traction battery to power external electrical devices and appliances. In simple terms, V2L turns an EV into a massive "mobile power bank"—powering electric grills and kettles during camping trips, running power tools and work lights on job sites, or even serving as an emergency backup power supply for homes. V2L stands as the most fundamental and commercially prevalent application within the broader Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) ecosystem.
At the heart of V2L is the conversion of direct current (DC) from the traction battery pack into 220V 50Hz alternating current (AC) suitable for standard household appliances—a process handled by an inverter.
Depending on the location of this power conversion, V2L is primarily deployed via two technical solutions:
AC V2L (integrated on-board inverter solution). The vehicle features a built-in bi-directional on-board charger (OBC) that directly converts DC from the high-voltage battery into AC power output via the vehicle's Type 2 AC charging port. Drivers only require a dedicated V2L adapter or discharge cable to draw power. Since the adapter serves purely as a physical connector without internal electronics, it remains highly affordable (typically around RM100 to RM200). BYD pioneered this technology as early as 2015 and now includes it as standard equipment across its lineup, including models like the BYD Seagull. AC V2L output is determined by the OBC's rated capacity—typically 3.3 kW or 6.6 kW on mainstream models—which is ample for running induction cookers, projectors, portable air conditioners, and other everyday electrical appliances.
DC V2L (external inverter solution). Certain vehicles, such as selected models from Tesla and NIO, lack a bi-directional OBC and instead rely on an external inverter connected directly to the DC fast-charging port to provide V2L capability. The discharge output of DC V2L is dictated by the external inverter's rating, generally falling between 2 kW and 6 kW, though theoretically capable of higher outputs. Because the adapter incorporates a dedicated inverter module, DC V2L discharge equipment is significantly pricier, typically exceeding RM2,000.
The practical utility of V2L is demonstrated across three key application scenarios:
Outdoor camping and recreation represents its most popular application. EVs can reliably power rice cookers, induction hobs, coffee machines, and projectors on demand, completely elevating the outdoor lifestyle experience. Range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) such as the Li Auto ONE benefit from an on-board petrol generator, effectively eliminating battery range anxiety.
Job site operations and emergency power supply offer substantial practical value. Contractors can utilise V2L on remote work sites to run power tools such as rotary hammers, angle grinders, and circular saws. Drivers can also configure a minimum state-of-charge (SoC) threshold (such as 60%) to ensure sufficient battery range for the journey home. During sudden power outages or natural disasters, V2L serves as a dependable backup power source for essential household appliances. The Tesla Model Y Performance is confirmed to support V2L functionality via an upcoming OTA software update, delivering an output capability of up to 11.5 kW.
Effective 1 November 2025, China's national automotive standard GB/T 18487.4-2025 ("Electric vehicle conductive charging and discharging system - Part 4: Requirements for vehicle external discharging") officially comes into force. This standard establishes unified technical specifications for vehicle external discharging, capping AC discharge voltage at single-phase 250V or three-phase 440V, and enforcing a four-tier safety protection system covering overcurrent, residual current leakage, thermal monitoring, and earth fault protection. On the international stage, Germany's DKE is developing the DIN IEC/TS 63638 standard for V2L adapters to ensure broad cross-brand interoperability and stringent operational safety.
When operating V2L, vehicle owners should observe key precautions: ensure the total wattage of connected appliances does not exceed the vehicle's maximum rated V2L output; refrain from outdoor discharging during thunderstorms; and never place the discharge socket inside the boot or near tyres to avoid thermal buildup, mechanical damage, or electrical leakage risks.
