Denza Z9GT in Hong Kong: How fast is BYD Flash Charging? Is this HK$1M EV worth the price?

Waiting half an hour or more to charge an electric car could become less common, if the latest fast-charging technology lives up to its claims.

BYD's premium brand DENZA has launched the all-electric Z9GT in Hong Kong, with a headline-grabbing promise: charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes, or to 97% in nine.

Priced at HK$998,000, the Z9GT also packs an 850kW three-motor all-wheel-drive system and a claimed 0–100km/h time of just 2.7 seconds. But how fast is its flash charging in practice, and could it make a real difference to EV ownership in Hong Kong?

How fast is flash charging?

The all-electric DENZA Z9GT uses a 1,000V high-voltage platform and a 122.49kWh second-generation Blade Battery. It also supports BYD's latest Flash Charging technology.

According to DENZA, the battery can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and reach 97% in nine minutes under specified charging conditions. Even at temperatures as low as -30°C, charging from 20% to 97% is claimed to take just 12 minutes.

These are manufacturer figures achieved under specified conditions, not guaranteed charging times in everyday use.

Battery temperature, starting charge level, the charging equipment and ambient conditions can all affect how quickly the battery charges. Plugging into a conventional public fast charger will not necessarily deliver these results.

The charging network matters as much as the car

Ultra-fast charging depends on more than the battery and the car's electrical architecture. The charging station must also be capable of supplying the required power.

BYD says its Flash Charging technology supports charging power of up to 1,500kW in China's Mainland. Taking full advantage of that capability requires compatible Flash Charging stations.

For Hong Kong buyers, the key question is whether suitable chargers will be available where they actually drive and park. Before buying, it is worth checking the locations of compatible stations, how they can be accessed and what charging will cost.

Even a car capable of extremely rapid charging will take longer to replenish its battery if the available charger has a lower power output. The technology's real-world benefit will therefore depend on how quickly the charging network expands and how conveniently drivers can use it.

850kW and 0–100km/h in 2.7 seconds

Charging speed is only part of the Z9GT's appeal. Its all-electric version uses three motors and all-wheel drive, producing a combined 850kW and 1,210Nm of torque. DENZA claims a 0–100km/h time of 2.7 seconds.

At 5,180mm long, the Z9GT is a large GT shooting brake. To make it easier to manoeuvre in urban settings, it comes with rear-wheel steering and BYD's e³ intelligent electric-drive system, which supports features including tank turn and crab-walking mode. The claimed turning radius is 4.62 metres.

That said, its length remains a consideration for Hong Kong drivers, particularly when it comes to parking spaces, car park ramps and narrow access roads. A tight turning radius can help, but it does not remove the challenges of manoeuvring a car of this size.

At HK$998,000

The all-electric DENZA Z9GT is priced at HK$998,000, placing it in the premium EV market. Its appeal lies in the combination of a large battery, ultra-fast charging, three-motor all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering.

For drivers who value performance, regularly cover longer distances and have access to compatible Flash Charging stations, the Z9GT's charging capability could be a significant advantage.

For those who mainly make short trips around Hong Kong, however, the availability of convenient charging, parking arrangements and overall running costs may matter more than the fastest possible charging time.

Flash Charging could substantially reduce the time spent waiting for an EV to recharge. But for charging to become as convenient as refuelling, the infrastructure needs to keep pace with the technology.
