XPENG G6 vs Tesla Model Y in Hong Kong: Is the Tesla worth HK$94,000 more?

The XPENG G6 and Tesla Model Y are two popular mid-size electric SUVs in Hong Kong. Both offer rear-wheel drive, five seats and a claimed WLTC range of around 480 km, but there is a substantial difference in price.

According to BitAuto Hong Kong's vehicle listings, the entry-level XPENG G6 Air starts at HK$319,900, while the Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive costs HK$413,407. That's a difference of HK$93,507.

So what does the extra money get you? We compare the two SUVs in terms of performance, charging, space and technology.

Pricing and Market Positioning

At HK$319,900, the XPeng G6 Air offers an 800V electrical architecture and double-wishbone front suspension at a considerably lower price than the Model Y.

The Tesla costs HK$413,407, putting it above the HK$400,000 mark. Part of its appeal lies in the wider Tesla ownership experience, including its Supercharger network, software integration and regular over-the-air updates.

Whether these benefits justify the additional HK$93,507 will depend on how each buyer uses their car.

Performance and Range

There is little to separate the two SUVs on official driving range. The G6 offers 480 km under WLTC testing, while the Model Y is rated at 488 km — a difference of just 8 km.

The Tesla is quicker, however. Its claimed 0–100 km/h time is 5.9 seconds, compared with 6.9 seconds for the G6 Air.

The G6's rear motor produces 185.29 kW, while the corresponding motor output for the Model Y is not listed. Based on the published acceleration figures, the Tesla has the advantage when accelerating from a standstill, although everyday performance will also depend on throttle response and power delivery.

The XPENG G6 uses an 800V platform and supports DC fast charging at up to 382 kW. XPENG quotes a 10–80% charging time of just 12 minutes under suitable conditions.

The Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive supports a maximum DC charging rate of 175 kW, according to the listed specifications.

The G6 therefore has a substantial advantage in peak charging power on paper. This could be particularly useful for drivers who frequently rely on compatible public fast chargers.

Cabin Space and Practicality

The Model Y is slightly longer and wider than the G6. It measures 4,790 mm long and 1,982 mm wide, making it 32 mm longer and 62 mm wider than the XPENG.

Tesla quotes a maximum luggage capacity of 2,138 litres, while the G6 offers 571 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1,374 litres when they are folded.

That said, standing at 1650 mm, the G6 is marginally taller than the 1624 mm Model Y, which can translate into slightly more generous headroom.

Technology and Software

The XPENG G6 comes with a 15.6-inch central touchscreen powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8295 chipset. Its driver assistance hardware includes an NVIDIA Orin-X processor, supporting Level 2 driver assistance functions.

The Tesla Model Y features a slightly larger 16-inch touchscreen and benefits from Tesla's integrated software ecosystem, including over-the-air updates and access to its Supercharger network.

Tesla also offers its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in certain markets, although availability and functionality vary by region.

Which One Should You Buy?

The entry-level XPENG G6 is ideal for buyers with a budget just north of HK$300,000 who prioritise ultra-fast charging speeds and high-spec hardware.

Its 800V platform, 12-minute fast charging, and double-wishbone front suspension make it exceptionally competitive at this price point. The trade-offs are a less spirited acceleration curve and noticeably less luggage capacity than its rival.

The Tesla Model Y RWD caters to drivers with a budget exceeding HK$400,000 who place a premium on brand prestige, charging infrastructure, and load-lugging practicality.

Brisk 0-100 km/h acceleration, an expansive 2138 L boot, and unmatched Supercharger coverage in Hong Kong are key factors keeping buyers firmly in the Tesla camp.

Ultimately, the two SUVs are close on official range but quite different in price and charging specifications. A test drive in both, along with a look at the charging options available near your home or workplace, should help determine whether the Model Y's higher price is worthwhile for you.
