Tesla Q3 2026 results: Margins recover, free cash flow turns positive as Roadster, Optimus and Cybercab advance

Tesla released its Q3 2026 financial results on 21 October. Revenue was flat year on year, but gross margin improved and free cash flow returned to positive territory.

The company also reported progress on several long-awaited projects, including the new Roadster, Optimus humanoid robots and the Cybercab robotaxi service.

Tesla's gross margin rose from 16.8% in Q2 to 19.6% in Q3. Free cash flow also swung from a negative US$1.09 billion in the previous quarter to a positive US$1.531 billion.

However, GAAP net income fell 43% year on year, with increased research and development spending and capital expenditure weighing on profitability.

Deliveries

Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles worldwide in Q3, down 2% year on year but up 1.3% from the previous quarter. Deliveries have remained above 480,000 for two consecutive quarters.

The breakdown was as follows:

Model 3 and Model Y: 478,237 units
Other models, including the Cybertruck, Model S and Model X: 8,295 units

Tesla's cumulative deliveries also passed the 10 million mark during the quarter, reaching 10.2 million vehicles. The company reported record deliveries in several markets, including Canada, Australia, Japan and Taiwan.

Vehicle inventory stood at 11 days of supply. Tesla also said it ended the quarter with its largest backlog of passenger-car orders awaiting delivery in four years.

Five major developments

1. New Roadster unveiled

On 15 October, Tesla unveiled the new-generation Roadster. The sports car features a SpaceX package and is claimed to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than one second.

The Roadster remains one of Tesla's most closely watched projects.

2. Optimus enters production

Tesla has begun producing Optimus humanoid robots on a high-volume production line at its Fremont factory. The latest batch consists of the first production-grade units, according to the company, which says its manufacturing process is now suitable for commercial products.

3. Cybercab enters robotaxi service

The Cybercab began operating in Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin on 3 September. By the end of Q3, the service had accumulated nearly two million miles of unsupervised driving, an eightfold increase during the quarter.

Operating hours have also been extended from 6 am to midnight.

4. FSD take-up exceeds 75%

More than 75% of newly delivered Tesla vehicles in North America were equipped with Full Self-Driving (FSD), an increase of nearly 20 percentage points from the previous quarter.

Active FSD subscribers reached 1.74 million, up 67% year on year.

In Europe, Croatia, Slovenia, Czechia and Slovakia approved FSD during Q3, bringing the total to nine EU countries where the system is available.

5. Tesla Semi enters production

Production of the Tesla Semi has begun at the company's Nevada factory.

Tesla quotes a range of 500 miles (approximately 805 km) for the top-spec version when fully loaded to 82,000 lb (approximately 37 tonnes). Energy consumption is rated at 1.7 kWh per mile, which represents around two-thirds less energy use than comparable diesel trucks.

Other highlights

Berlin factory: Production reached a new record.
Texas Megafactory: Production has begun, with planned capacity of 50 GWh.
Supercharger network: 8,904 stations and 84,465 charging connectors, up 15% and 14% year on year respectively.
Energy storage: Deployments reached 13.7 GWh, up 10% year on year, while orders and the backlog both hit record highs.
AI computing: Tesla plans to reach 400 MW of training compute capacity by the end of the year.

Tesla's latest results point to an improvement in profitability and cash generation, even as automotive revenue and deliveries remain below year-ago levels. The company also reported a four-year high in its order backlog, although it cited battery supply constraints as a limit on production.

Much of the attention, however, is on projects beyond its established car business. The Roadster unveiling, Optimus production, Cybercab's entry into robotaxi service and rising FSD adoption all feature in Tesla's plans to expand into new areas of business. How much they contribute to revenue and profit will depend on production volumes, regulatory approval and the pace of commercial rollout.

For Tesla fans in Hong Kong, the Roadster's eventual arrival would be worth watching. The timing of FSD availability in Hong Kong is another open question for local owners.

There are still reasons for caution. GAAP net income fell 43% year on year as Tesla increased spending on R&D and capital investment. The shares also fell by more than 3% in after-hours trading, reflecting concerns about near-term earnings.
