From the green belt to the bamboo cicada, the 'hidden war' between Chinese automakers has gone public.
Regarding the 'Bamboo Cicada' incident that has caused a storm in the industry, on August 5, official media 'Zhejiang Propaganda' published an article like this: 'Four Thoughts on the Bamboo Cicada Incident.'

The article states: The stronger the enterprise, the greater its tolerance for discussion. In the 'Bamboo Cicada' incident, many netizens participated in the discussion by releasing videos, etc. This was not to deny Huawei's technical strength, nor was it to question China's technological innovation, but rather grassroots expression centered around certain communication symbols of enterprises. This expression is more about exploring the boundary between commercial rights protection and internet meme culture, reflecting higher scrutiny standards for behavior of top enterprises, and is a soft form of public opinion feedback.
But what netizens worry about is: If various jokes and teasing are considered attacks, and if brand dignity is equated to 'cannot be discussed', then the margin for error for online expression will continue to be compressed, derivative creation and memes will be easily over-interpreted, and making statements will become increasingly restrained.
Zhejiang Propaganda also specifically mentioned: High-profile expression must withstand scrutiny. Zhejiang Propaganda pointed out: For example, Huawei Executive Director and Terminal BG Chairman Richard Yu stated at a press conference that whether within 5 million or 10 million, AITO M9 is the most powerful SUV among currently launched models on Earth, hands down.
'Most Powerful' 'Hands down' such unreserved statements, indeed tend to be amplified in communication. When an enterprise emphasizes its own advantages with absolute language, consumers will naturally ask: Why is it the 'most powerful'? What is the standard? Once a disconnect appears between communication expression and user actual feelings, the rhetoric originally used to build trust may become a target for netizen jokes or even sarcasm.
After Zhejiang Propaganda published this article, it immediately triggered an uproar. Surprisingly, 'Half-Month Talk', a magazine under Xinhua News Agency, reprinted the article verbatim. Does this mean official media collectively stepped in to criticize Harmony Intelligent Mobility's 'dominance'?
Regarding the so-called 'Bamboo Cicada' incident, the AI software Doubao gave such an explanation:
In the December 2023 AITO M9 press conference, Richard Yu said the hit line 'Best SUV within 10 million', and the audience on site let out continuous 'Wow' sounds of surprise, becoming a network meme circulated for years in the auto circle.
In July 2026, some netizens accidentally found that the wawa sound emitted by the Bamboo Cicada rotating is highly similar to the collective surprise sound of the audience at the press conference. Many bloggers started making derivative short videos: the screen shows hand-cranking the Bamboo Cicada, the soundtrack is the original press conference audio, and the caption plays on the meme: Best toy within 10 million, leading by shaking.
At that time, it was widely rumored online that Harmony Intelligent Mobility legal department complained and took down videos as soon as they saw Bamboo Cicada videos, even videos that only posted Bamboo Cicada without any follow-up interpretation were also complained and taken down. Public opinion was immediately in an uproar.
How real is the situation? On August 4, a Harmony Intelligent Mobility spokesperson issued a statement:
For a long time, malicious editing, impersonation of relevant executive voices, using AI to defame portraits, false attribution, slander, etc., content infringing on personal legal rights has been continuously existing on the network. We have always conducted daily evidence collection and complaints in accordance with the law. This complaint is part of daily rights protection work, targeting specific infringing content, not targeting the 'Bamboo Cicada' toy. As of the evening of August 4, a total of 56,000+ relevant online information was monitored. We actually initiated complaints against 171 specific infringing content items, and the platform feedback indicated 144 were taken down.

The Harmony Intelligent Mobility spokesperson clearly pointed out in the statement that complaints were initiated against only 171 items, and the platform feedback indicated 144 were taken down. In other words, among these 171 videos, at least 84% of videos were judged as non-compliant by the platform. Then, where did the information spread on the internet that Harmony Intelligent Mobility complains whenever seeing Bamboo Cicada come from?
Even more shocking is, regarding the same event, official media showed divergence, with high tension between them. On the evening of August 5, 'Jiangsu News', also an official media, published an article like this: Those advising Huawei to be generous, are you suitable?
Jiangsu News stated: It is quite rare that when Huawei is maliciously attacked and takes rights protection action voluntarily, someone still jumps out to advise it — large enterprises should be generous, only listening seriously to advice is true confidence, etc., with an air of teaching large enterprises how to do things,
Essentially, it is a posture of justifying black traffic, guiding public opinion with words that seem rational, neutral, and objective on the surface, but actually blur legal boundaries, affect market judgment, and damage the business environment, which is a bit inappropriate.
Since 'Jiangsu News' mentioned in the article 'Someone jumps out to advise it — large enterprises should be generous', which is highly related to what was mentioned in 'Zhejiang Propaganda' article 'The stronger the enterprise, the greater its tolerance for discussion', outsiders widely speculate that Jiangsu News is directly 'retorting' against relevant figures represented by the 'Zhejiang Propaganda' article.
Official media directly stepping in to 'fight', this is a rare thing in the past car circle.
Coincidentally, on July 30, Xiaomi Auto held the Xiaomi Pengcheng Technology Launch Event, when Xiaomi Company founder Lei Jun announced the price of Xiaomi's new car N90 Max, he specially said such a sentence: 'I can assertively say that N90 Max is one of the best models among Range Extender SUVs within 500,000 yuan.' What is interesting is, when Lei Jun mentioned 'models' here, he intentionally made a longer pause, and then added words like 'one of'.
After the Xiaomi Pengcheng Technology Launch Event, on August 3, Xiaomi PR Head Xu Jieyun posted a Weibo like this: 'Encourage real awesome, strike down exaggerating awesome', presumably alluding to the industry 'exaggerated marketing' phenomenon. The two events happened one after the other, since it coincided with the escalation of the Harmony Intelligent Mobility 'Bamboo Cicada' incident, triggering extensive discussion in the industry.

Is this Xiaomi intentionally targeting Huawei?
It is not an isolated incident. As early as September 16, 2025 at the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Stelato S9T New Product Launch Event, Huawei's Richard Yu publicly said such a paragraph: 'You say our cars are racing for two-second acceleration performance, or three-second acceleration performance, this is meaningless, you know? What is truly important is safety. Drifting directly on the road, drifting to other lanes, drifting to the green belt. Everyone thinks drifting is a very impressive performance, on highways, in city roads, you simply cannot drift easily, drifting will only bring traffic accidents. You think drifting in the city is how cool, I say that is the most stupid behavior, safety is the most important.'
Since Xiaomi SU7 Max version and SU7 ULTRA version both have extremely strong acceleration capabilities, and frequently there are incidents of Xiaomi SU7 running onto green belts in folklore, some netizens called Xiaomi SU7 'Green Belt God of War', and Xiaomi also specifically debunked rumors for this. In such a background, Richard Yu's paragraph is generally interpreted by the industry as alluding to Xiaomi.
Added to that in the early years Lei Jun had publicly called out to 'Defeat Huawei'. No matter what background this sentence was based on, at first glance, this information undoubtedly conveyed the signal to people that Xiaomi and Huawei are 'arch enemies'.
This time Bamboo Cicada incident, Zhejiang Propaganda, Jiangsu News stepped in turn, standing at completely opposite positions to comment on the same thing, which is truly rare.
What felt unexpected was, on August 6, a netizen posted a Lianhe Zaobao article, Lianhe Zaobao stated in the article: 'Facing the huge Chinese public opinion market, using power to pressure netizens is actually the lower strategy, ignoring it is the middle strategy, being able to like Lei Jun turn positive communication through self-mockery or other techniques is the upper strategy'. From Lianhe Zaobao's viewpoint, its stance of praising Xiaomi and mocking Huawei is obvious. This again triggered an uproar in domestic public opinion.

From multiple angles, the hidden struggle between Huawei and Xiaomi seems to be upgrading. Our view is: Two top enterprises hidden struggle, and duration is prolonged, is both a manifestation of the industry competition becoming fierce, and also caused by the objective factors of industry high-speed development. In such a scenario, whether it is Huawei or Xiaomi, remaining restrained in public opinion, maintaining high standards in products, ensuring legal compliance in marketing communication, or perhaps is the way to solve mutual respect.

In January-June 2026, BYD passenger vehicle overseas exports continued to show a rapid growth trend, with export destinations exhibiting layout characteristics of "Latin America leading strongly, Europe breaking through at multiple points, and differentiated expansion in Oceania, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East." Brazil continues to firmly hold the position of the largest overseas market. Five European countries made it into the top ten export destinations, and overseas key markets such as Australia, Philippines, Thailand, UAE all achieved scaled output. Meanwhile, BYD fully leveraged the advantages of dual technology routes of pure electric and plug-in hybrid, flexibly configured products according to local consumer preferences and market environments, and the global penetration of overseas markets continued to advance.
According to Gasgoo Automotive Research Institute export database, the top ten export destinations for BYD passenger vehicles in January-June 2026 are as follows:
NO.1 Brazil, January-June 2026, exported 99,504 Battery Electric Passenger Vehicles to Brazil, 95,182 Plug-in Hybrid Passenger Vehicles, totaling 194,686 vehicles.
NO.2 Australia, January-June 2026, exported 42,258 Battery Electric Passenger Vehicles to Australia, 16,581 Plug-in Hybrid Passenger Vehicles, totaling 58,839 vehicles.
NO.3 Belgium, January-June 2026, exported 16,810 Battery Electric Passenger Vehicles to Belgium, 27,038 Plug-in Hybrid Passenger Vehicles, totaling 43,848 vehicles.
NO.4 United Kingdom, January-June 2026, exported 11,201 Battery Electric Passenger Vehicles to United Kingdom, 27,853 Plug-in Hybrid Passenger Vehicles, totaling 39,054 vehicles.
NO.5 Germany, January-June 2026, exported 11,690 Battery Electric Passenger Vehicles to Germany, 16,626 Plug-in Hybrid Passenger Vehicles, totaling 28,316 vehicles.

NO.8 Spain, January-June 2026, exported 6,879 Battery Electric Passenger Vehicles to Spain, 10,730 Plug-in Hybrid Passenger Vehicles, totaling 17,609 vehicles.
NO.9 Slovenia, January-June 2026, exported 7,933 Battery Electric Passenger Vehicles to Slovenia, 8,148 Plug-in Hybrid Passenger Vehicles, totaling 16,081 vehicles.
NO.10 Thailand, January-June 2026, exported 14,307 Battery Electric Passenger Vehicles to Thailand, 14 Plug-in Hybrid Passenger Vehicles, totaling 14,321 vehicles.

According to Gasgoo Automotive Research Institute export database, in January-June 2026, BYD passenger vehicle overseas exports showed development characteristics of "Brazil leading by a wide margin, multiple European countries breaking through, and significant differentiation in power consumption preferences across regions".
Brazil ranked first with a stable 194,686 vehicles. The export volumes of pure electric (99,504) and plug-in hybrid (95,182) were close, indicating that the market maintained strong demand for BYD's two major technology routes. It is worth noting that Brazil's import policy is tightening, and the future export mode may transition from complete vehicle export to localized production.
Multiple countries in Europe occupied several seats on the list, with Belgium, UK, Germany, Spain, and Slovenia all ranking in the top ten. Among them, Belgium (62% PHEV share) and UK (71% PHEV share) are dominated by PHEV models; Germany has a balanced distribution of BEV and PHEV; Spain is roughly balanced between the two power forms; Slovenia is also relatively balanced. This reflects that BYD is flexibly adjusting its product structure according to market demand in different countries and continuously deepening its European layout.
The demand differences in Oceania, Southeast Asia, and Middle East markets are further amplified. Australia ranked second with an export volume of 58,839 vehicles, with the market dominated by BEV models; Thailand's export volume came almost entirely from BEVs, with PHEV models accounting for a negligible proportion; the UAE market highly relied on PHEV products; Philippines also favored PHEV models more among consumers. Overall, BYD did not adopt a single technology route for overseas expansion, but instead deployed products adapted to local conditions according to energy policies and consumption habits of different countries.

The last weekend of July in the summer of 2026, I spent it in Pingshan, Shenzhen.
That afternoon, I visited an Italian-style café near BYD's Global Headquarters to meet Old Li.
Old Li was my college roommate. After graduation, he joined BYD and has been there for over ten years. From the original F3, he worked his way up to the current YangWang.
He opened his laptop. The screen was densely packed with progress tables for building factories overseas and various technical blueprints.
I asked him if his body could handle the non-stop recent schedule.
He closed the laptop, took a big gulp of iced coffee, and his eyes shone with a extremely bright light:
"It's tiring, but I feel happy inside. In July, we sold 419,000 vehicles. Data on premium cars and overseas sales all broke records. This feeling is like holding back a powerful move for ten years and finally landing it on the opponent's face."
1

419,000 vehicles.
This number represents a massive gap on the July China New Energy Vehicle sales list. For 62 consecutive months, BYD has firmly occupied the throne of China's monthly New Energy Vehicle sales.
But what truly excited Old Li was not the sheer volume, but the structural qualitative change.
"Previously, there was always a stereotype outside that we only rely on low prices for volume." Old Li turned the computer screen toward me, pointing to a set of data. "Take a look at this."
In July, BYD's premium brands (FangChengBao, Denza, YangWang) sold over 60,000 vehicles in total, a year-on-year increase of about 135%. Especially FangChengBao, sold over 40,000 vehicles in a single month, with a brand average transaction price exceeding 220,000; YangWang and Denza also steadily consolidated their positions in their ultra-luxury and luxury segments.
Old Li said, going for the premium segment is BYD's ingrained obsession with "daring to dream".
He recalled the past few years when the company proposed developing "e4", "DiSus", and million-level luxury cars. How many doubts came from outside. Some said it was a pipe dream, others said Chinese brands couldn't sell at that price.
"But Boss Wang (Wang Chuanfu) and our technical team just dared to do it, and dared to persist," Old Li said. "We stayed up countless nights and days in the lab, not to compete in a low-level price war, but to achieve a real generational advantage in core technologies."
When YangWang U8 turned around in place and floated on emergency water, when FangChengBao Bao 5 walked easily in the desert and snow, all those doubts turned into amazement.
Old Li looked at me, smiling and said: "Do you know what the most satisfying moment is for a Chinese engineer? It's not about how much bonus was issued, but seeing the code you wrote yourself and the chassis you tuned, forcing those once lofty century-old luxury brands to bow down and study you."
This is a pure sense of pride belonging to tech geeks.
2
After finishing the coffee, Old Li drove me to Yantian Port.
The sea breeze mixed with a salty wet scent. Massive Ro-Ro ships looked like moving steel islands, swallowing new BYD cars one by one into their bellies.
In July, BYD's passenger car and pickup overseas sales reached nearly 180,000 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 124.3%, setting a new historical high. For the first 7 months of this year, cumulative overseas sales approached the one million vehicle milestone.
Standing by the dock, Old Li pointed to the cars about to go to the vast ocean and said: "These cars are going to Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia. Our overseas channels and factories are sprouting vigorously."
Going global is another key battleground for BYD's "daring to act".
Old Li told me that current global expansion is no longer the simple "selling goods out" of those days, but "rooting" across the whole industry chain and system.
"We built factories in Hungary, Brazil, and Thailand. We not only brought cars, but also brought flash charging technology, brought God's Eye high-level intelligent driving, and brought China's new energy standards."
He spoke of the experience of opening up the European market last year. The team was then facing European giants with hundreds of years of automotive cultural heritage, and local consumers were full of scrutiny towards a car brand from China.
"We didn't retreat. We relied on hardcore technical presentations one after another, on real test drive experiences one after another, tearing open a gap forcibly." Old Li said, "Daring to persist is fighting to the end in places others think are impossible and too difficult."
Looking at those huge ships sailing towards the deep blue, I suddenly felt somewhat emotional.
Decades ago, we exchanged 800 million shirts for one airplane; more than ten years ago, we exchanged cheap OEM products for meager foreign exchange.
And today, Chinese engineers use self-developed three-electric systems and leading intelligent cockpits to transport high-value-added cars ship by ship to the world, to exchange for a say at the top of the global industrial chain.
This is not only a victory of business, but also a leap of the spirit of the times.
3
On the evening of August 1st, the sales list for July was officially released.

I looked closely at that table. BYD 419,000, SAIC 177,000, Geely 160,000, Chery 129,000, Leapmotor 101,000. Further down, new forces at the 30,000 to 40,000 level.
This is a glamorous list, also the prelude to a major reshuffle of China's automotive industry.
In this era of winner-takes-all, there is no middle ground. Those names not on the list, those car companies that were once in the limelight, some have already stopped production, some are struggling hard in the ICU.
I asked Old Li, facing such an industry landscape, what is BYD's real moat?
He thought for a while and said six words:
Dare to think, dare to act, dare to persist.
"Many people only see our current sales, but didn't see we persisted on LFP for over ten years, persisted on PHEV technology for over ten years." Old Li said. "When the wind of opportunity comes, only those enterprises that truly dare to imagine the future, dare to put in hard work on R&D, and persist in long-termism even during low periods, can receive this overwhelming wealth."
This persistence is not blind involution, but a certainty towards "doing hard but correct things".
In BYD's engineer culture, everyone pursues a huge sense of accomplishment after overcoming difficulties. When a new technology becomes reality from blueprints, when a new model fights all over the global market, the joy of dopamine secretion cannot be replaced by anything.
This is exactly the positive energy most needed in today's Chinese society, using solid technology and innovation to win the world's respect.
4
On the way back from Yantian Port to the city center, the sunset dyed Shennan Avenue golden yellow.
Old Li told me that next week he would fly to Hungary to monitor the final debugging work of the European passenger car factory.
"The team over there is ready. We want to get the first car off the line locally in Europe before the end of the year." In his tone, there was no fatigue from long-distance flying, only anticipation for the new journey about to begin.
Looking at the profile of his face as he focused on driving, I suddenly felt that the best stories of this era are actually written by millions of people like Old Li.
They are trendsetters in the tide of this country's industrial upgrading. They have light in their eyes, fire in their hearts, and a road under their feet.
419,000 vehicles are not only scattered across every corner of China, but will eventually also spread to all corners of the world.
They will become new favorites in European middle-class garages, partners for Latin American families on weekend outings, and the most beautiful scenery on Southeast Asian streets.
They are not only transportation tools, but also business cards for China's intelligent manufacturing going global.
When getting off the car, I shook hands with Old Li vigorously.
"Everything goes smoothly in Europe, waiting for your good news." I said.
He nodded smiling, pressed the gas pedal, and the car merged into the Shenzhen evening rush hour traffic flowing forward.
Watching the car disappear, I know that the Great Age of Navigation belonging to Chinese cars and Chinese engineers has just begun.

In the Malaysian SUV market, many buyers compare Proton X70 and Chery Tiggo 9 when choosing a car. The prices and positioning of these two cars are quite close. Today, we will make a detailed comparison from multiple aspects to help save you time on research.
Proton X70 OTR price in Malaysia is RM 106,800 - 122,300, with a total of 3 versions, including 1.5L Standard 2WD (RM 106,800), 1.5L Executive 2WD (RM 115,800), 1.5L Premium 2WD (RM 122,300), etc.
Chery Tiggo 9 OTR price in Malaysia is RM 166,800 - 179,800, with a total of 1 version, including 2026 2.0T Standard (RM 179,750), etc.
From a price perspective, Proton X70's starting price is indeed RM 60,000 cheaper than Chery Tiggo 9. If your budget is limited, Proton's entry-level version can already meet daily needs. However, note that saving a few thousand might involve trade-offs in features, depending on your specific needs.

Proton X70's safety rating is 5★ (ASEAN NCAP), active safety systems include ADAS (ACC, AEB, LKA, LDA, BSM, RCTA).
Chery Tiggo 9's safety rating is TBD, active safety systems include Basic.
Regarding safety features, both cars received good ratings. However, there are some differences in functionality between Proton X70's ADAS (ACC, AEB, LKA, LDA, BSM, RCTA) and Chery Tiggo 9's Basic. If you value active safety more, you can compare the feature lists of both carefully.

Proton X70 warranty is 5 years/150,000km, maintenance interval every 10,000km or 6 months.
Chery Tiggo 9 warranty is 3 years/100,000km, maintenance interval every 10,000km or 6 months.

If you value brand reputation and resale price more, you can prioritize the one with better reputation; if you care more about cost-performance and features, then choose the one with richer configuration. Ultimately, it is recommended to test drive both, as first-hand experience is the most important.
In general, Proton X70 and Chery Tiggo 9 are both quite good models in the Malaysian market. Which one to choose depends on your personal needs and budget.
