2026-10-02 18:10:00

Model Overview

The Yangwang U8 is the debut production model from BYD's ultra-luxury marque, Yangwang, positioned as an RM1,000,000-class new energy rugged full-size off-road SUV. The flagship SUV made its global premiere at the brand launch on 5 January 2023 and went on sale later that year. The Yangwang U8 is offered in two variants: the Standard Edition and the U8L Dingshi Edition; the 2026 Yangwang U8 Standard Edition starts from RM1,008,000, while the U8L Dingshi Edition is positioned as an executive luxury full-size SUV priced from RM1,300,000. Based on the Standard Edition, the U8L gains a 200 mm longer wheelbase and adopts a 2+2+2 six-seater layout. Built on the proprietary e⁴ platform with an all-new full aluminium ladder-frame chassis, its key rivals include segment heavyweights such as the Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Design Language

Styled under the direction of former Audi, Volkswagen, and Lamborghini design head Wolfgang Josef Egger, the Yangwang U8 adopts the brand’s signature "Time Gate" design language, seamlessly blending futuristic aesthetics with rugged, imposing proportions. Up front, a massive dot-matrix grille draws inspiration from the Kuiper Belt at the edge of the solar system, housing the brand emblem at the centre—inspired by the ancient oracle bone script for "electricity" (dian). Flanking the front are "Interstellar" matrix Ding-shaped headlights, with the upper daytime running lights echoing the silhouette of a classic Ding vessel to convey oriental prestige. The side profile features an upright, chiselled stance, with the D-pillar Energy Tower incorporating multiple LED light strips that display dynamic lighting sequences during charging, discharging, locking, or unlocking. At the rear, an octagonal tailgate-mounted spare tyre comes as standard, paired with a practical side-hinged tailgate.

In terms of dimensions, the Standard Edition measures 5,319 mm in length, 2,050 mm in width, and 1,930 mm in height, with a 3,050 mm wheelbase; the U8L Dingshi Edition stretches to 5,400 mm long, 2,049 mm wide, and 1,921 mm tall, riding on an extended 3,250 mm wheelbase.

Inside, the cabin embraces the "Star Ring Cockpit" design philosophy inspired by planetary rings. It is headlined by a 12.8-inch OLED Galaxy curved infotainment display (R800 curvature), alongside 23.6-inch screens for both the digital instrument cluster and front passenger entertainment, complemented by twin 12.8-inch floating rear screens to enable seamless five-screen interactivity. Premium appointments include selected Nappa leather upholstery, rare Sapele wood, and Black Walnut veneers, accentuated by 127-colour ambient lighting and a starry sky panoramic sunroof. The 2026 model adds four new interior colourways: Kunlun Brown, Danxia Orange, Mist Purple, and Distant Mountain Grey.

Powertrain and Performance

The Yangwang U8 is powered by the e⁴ quad-motor independent drive system featuring four dedicated electric motors for each wheel. Each motor delivers 220 kW, generating a colossal total output of 880 kW (approx. 1,200 PS / 1,200 hp) and peak torque of 1,520 Nm. The century sprint (0-100 km/h) is dispatched in as quick as 3.5 seconds. Power is managed via a single-speed EV reduction gearbox, delivering a top speed of 200 km/h.

In terms of range, the Standard Edition is equipped with the Blade Battery, delivering a CLTC pure-electric range of 180 km and an overall cruising range exceeding 1,000 km; the U8L Dingshi Edition upgrades the battery capacity to 55.53 kWh, paired with a 90-litre fuel tank to achieve a CLTC combined range of 1,160 km. The 2026 lineup upgrades across the board with BYD's second-generation Blade Battery and flash charging technology, boosting the total range to 1,205 km. When it comes to energy replenishment, the U8L Dingshi Edition takes approximately 13.5 minutes to juice up from 30% to 80% under DC fast charging; the 2026 model supports an ultra-high 9C charging rate. A 6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power supply function is also supported.

Chassis and Handling

The Yangwang U8 adopts a rugged body-on-frame chassis construction. Underpinning the vehicle is the DiSus-P intelligent hydraulic body control system, recognised as the world's first intelligent hydraulic body control system. Integrating mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic control technologies, the system boasts a massive 5-tonne lifting capacity, 150 mm of total suspension travel, and height adjustability that permits a maximum ground clearance of up to 285 mm. Compared to conventional air suspension, DiSus-P delivers significantly higher lifting force, impact resistance, and durability, making it far superior for severe off-road duties. Both front and rear axles feature independent double-wishbone setups. The vehicle offers three-stage stiffness adjustment and continuous adaptive damping with a lightning-quick 5-millisecond signal response time. The U8L Dingshi Edition gets the enhanced DiSus-P+ system with dual solenoid valve damping control, effectively soaking up road imperfections and suppressing body roll during high-speed cornering.

The 2026 iteration upgrades to the eTCS 2.0 full-speed-range road surface perception and control system, pairing lateral and longitudinal coordinated stability control with high-fault-tolerance drive strategies to precisely match quad-motor torque vectoring with available surface grip. An active centre-split rear-wheel steering system comes standard, shrinking the turning radius to just 5.45 metres. Off-road credentials include an approach angle of 36.5° and a maximum wading depth of 1.2 metres. Signature capabilities include 360-degree tank turns on the spot, emergency water floating capability, and high-speed tyre blowout stability assist.

Cabin and Features

In terms of the digital cockpit, the 2026 Yangwang U8 is powered by the world's first mass-produced 3nm 5G automotive chipset running the DiLink 300 intelligent cockpit system. The infotainment system supports full-scenario AI voice command, contactless air gesture control, and multi-zone independent voice recognition. Premium acoustics are delivered via a flagship Dynaudio Platinum Evidence Hi-End audio system equipped with 22 speakers supporting Dolby Atmos surround sound.

In terms of passenger comfort, the second row of the U8L Dingshi Edition is fitted with dual zero-gravity captain seats supporting a 150° recline, power leg rests, and 18-point massage functions with three preset modes: Cloud Cinema, One-Touch Relax, and Flat Recliner. The cabin also features four-zone independent automatic climate control, an onboard smart cooling and heating refrigerator (cooling from -6°C to 6°C, warming from 35°C to 50°C), and smart electrochromic privacy glass. Front occupants enjoy standard 14-point massage seats, temperature-sensing armrests, and dual headrest speakers. The 2026 U8L Dingshi Edition further introduces an exclusive brand emblem crafted from genuine 24K gold.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

On the safety front, the U8L Dingshi Edition is constructed around an all-new full aluminium ladder-frame chassis using 7-series aerospace-grade aluminium alloy, engineered to meet global five-star-plus safety standards. Passive safety highlights include 14 airbags, seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, and high-performance carbon-ceramic brake discs. An infrared night vision system provides all-weather environmental perception with an effective detection range of up to 300 metres.

Market Performance and Evaluation

The Yangwang U8 enjoyed an explosive sales debut, topping 1,500 monthly deliveries for two consecutive months in December 2023 and January 2024. However, sales momentum subsequently slowed, hovering around 300 units monthly in the second half of 2024. For the full year of 2025, cumulative sales for the entire Yangwang U8 lineup (U8 and U8L) stood at 2,728 units, marking a sharp 62% year-on-year drop. In September 2025, the launch of the U8L Dingshi Edition sparked a brief recovery, recording 280 units in its debut month to lead the RM1,000,000-class luxury SUV segment. Entering 2026, monthly volumes cooled further, with cumulative deliveries across the first quarter (January to March) standing at only 20 units. As of June 2026, cumulative sales of the U8 stood at approximately 7,773 units.

In terms of market reception, the U8 established distinct technical barriers in the RM1,000,000 segment on the back of ground-breaking technologies such as the e⁴ quad-motor powertrain (1,200 hp / 0-100 km/h in 3.5s), DiSus-P intelligent hydraulic suspension, emergency water flotation, and on-the-spot tank turns. Meanwhile, the U8L Dingshi Edition—with its extended 3,250 mm wheelbase, six-seater zero-gravity layout, and executive luxury appointments—further expanded its reach into the chauffeur-driven executive sphere. Nonetheless, automotive observers note that the U8 struggled to sustain its initial momentum, showing signs of "fizzling out after a strong debut". Key contributing factors include an unestablished ultra-luxury brand premium, a disconnect between the hardcore off-road product positioning and target buyers' practical urban demands, and aggressive market pressure from rivals like the AITO M9. Overall, as the first RM1,000,000-class new energy off-roader from a Chinese marque, the Yangwang U8 has carved out a unique competitive edge defined by extreme engineering in the RM1,000,000 to RM1,300,000 full-size SUV market with selling points like e⁴ tech, DiSus-P hydraulic control, 1,200 hp muscle, and high-level ADAS; however, constrained by brand equity, intense competition, and evolving buyer preferences, its commercial performance continues to face significant headwinds.
