2026-10-02 03:40:00

The ONVO L60 is the debut production model from ONVO, the sub-brand under NIO, positioned as an all-electric mid-size family SUV. Originally launched in September 2024, the model received its first annual update on 11 June 2026. Serving as NIO’s strategic contender in the RM200,000 mainstream segment, the entire ONVO L60 range is built on NIO’s third-generation NT3.0 platform, featuring a full-domain 900V high-voltage architecture and full compatibility with NIO’s established battery swapping network. Offered in three variants—Pro, Max+, and Ultra+—complete vehicle prices range from RM192,800 to RM222,800, whilst the BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) subscription scheme lowers the entry price to RM135,800.

Model Overview

Positioned in the D-segment EV SUV market, the ONVO L60 measures 4,828 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,616 mm in height, riding on a 2,950 mm wheelbase. This class-leading wheelbase is 60 mm longer than that of the Tesla Model Y (2,890 mm), translating to generous rear legroom. The 5-door, 5-seater SUV offers an expansive boot that expands up to 2,060 litres with the rear seats folded flat—although standard boot capacity has not been specified—embodying a "five passengers, nine pieces of luggage" cabin packaging philosophy tailored for family getaways. Key highlights include the 900V architecture, access to NIO’s battery swapping ecosystem, an efficient energy consumption figure as low as 11.9 kWh/100 km, and flexible financing via the BaaS scheme.

On the sales front, the ONVO L60 has accumulated close to 100,000 deliveries since launch, enjoying robust early demand and hitting a peak delivery of 10,528 units in December 2024. However, sales experienced noticeable volatility heading into 2026, dropping to 1,978 units in January and sliding further to 1,664 units in February, dipping below the 2,000-unit mark for two straight months. NIO founder William Li acknowledged that establishing a fresh marque proved far more challenging than anticipated, with ONVO’s brand equity hovering around where NIO was six years ago. To rekindle market interest, the 2026 facelift adopts a "more kit for less money" strategy, lowering the starting price by RM14,000 compared to the pre-facelift model.

Design Language

The 2026 ONVO L60 retains its sleek SUV-coupe silhouette, boasting an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0.229 Cd, edging out the Tesla Model Y’s 0.23 Cd. The front fascia takes on a cleaner aesthetic with roof-mounted 'watchtower' sensors, complemented by integrated blue ADAS indicator lights on the wing mirrors to accentuate its high-tech character. A new Interstellar Grey exterior paint shade has been added alongside optional 20-inch alloy wheels for enhanced personalisation. The complete exterior colour palette has not been fully detailed in public releases.

Inside, the cabin comes standard across all variants with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chipset running the NT.Coconut operating system. The range-topping Ultra+ variant is fitted as standard with premium amenities including a 17.3-inch 3K rear entertainment screen, a 6-litre smart mini-fridge/warmer, and fold-out rear tray tables—features available as options on the Pro and Max+ variants—answering strong local appetite for a fully equipped lounge-like cabin. Synthetic leather upholstery comes standard, with genuine leather available as an option, and both front seats feature electric adjustment.

Powertrain and Performance

Underpinned by NIO’s third-generation NT3.0 architecture, the ONVO L60 benefits from the industry's first mass-produced 900V high-voltage electrical platform. Buyers can choose between single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrains:

RWD Version: Features a silicon carbide (SiC) rear motor producing 240 kW and 305 Nm of torque, dispatching the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds. CLTC-rated energy consumption is rated at an impressive 11.9 kWh/100 km, leading the mid-size electric SUV class.

AWD Version (Ultra+): Employs dual electric motors delivering a combined output of 340 kW and 440 Nm of torque, completing the century sprint in just 4.6 seconds, with a CLTC energy consumption rating of 12.1 kWh/100 km.

Two battery capacities are on offer: 60 kWh and 85 kWh. With the 85 kWh pack, the RWD version delivers up to 740 km of CLTC range, while the AWD model achieves 707 km; paired with the 60 kWh pack, range figures stand at 560 km for RWD and 530 km for AWD. Battery cells are supplied by CALB.

For charging and swapping, backed by NIO Power's nationwide network of 8,968 charging and swapping stations (including over 1,043 highway swapping stations), the L60 can complete a battery swap in just 3 minutes, with a station spaced out every 180 km on average. Via DC fast charging, a 10% to 80% state of charge (SOC) top-up takes just 25 minutes. Furthermore, the battery swapping ecosystem performs automated battery health checks and cell balancing, extending the typical traction battery lifespan from an industry average of 8 years to 12 years.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the ONVO L60 employs a suspension setup consisting of front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent arrangement, configured in either rear-wheel drive (Pro/Max+) or dual-motor all-wheel drive (Ultra+). The adaptive suspension features dynamic damping control that automatically adjusts firmness according to the selected drive mode. Steering is managed via an electric power steering (EPS) system, riding on a monocoque chassis.

Tyre sizes come standard at 245/50 R19, with 20-inch wheels available on higher variants. Stopping power is provided by ventilated disc brakes front and rear, complemented by an electronic parking brake (EPB). Available drive modes include Standard/Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Custom.

Lightweight engineering stands as a core highlight of the L60’s underpinnings. Utilising high-strength lightweight composites, an ultra-slim 85 kWh battery pack, and a compact 900V SiC rear drive unit, the RWD variant tips the scales at just 1,885 kg kerb weight—over 300 kg lighter than most segment rivals—achieving a body-in-white lightweight coefficient of 2.22. William Li remarked that mass reduction reflects a carmaker's core engineering prowess, noting that trimming weight below 1.9 tonnes incurs an R&D cost of roughly RM1,000 per kilogram.

Cabin and Equipment

The ONVO L60’s digital cockpit is driven by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chipset, running the NT.Coconut software suite alongside NIO’s proprietary SkyOS vehicle operating system. Cabin displays include a large central touchscreen infotainment display, a full-digital instrument binnacle, and an optional 17.3-inch 3K rear passenger display standard on the Ultra+. The infotainment system supports 5G connectivity and four-zone voice command recognition activated by the phrase "Xiao Le, Xiao Le".

In terms of cabin comfort, the ONVO L60 comes standard with a "Queen's Seat" zero-gravity front passenger lounger, powered front seats, and available seat heating, ventilation, and massage functions on upper trims. The Ultra+ gets the built-in 6-litre cool/warm storage box and fold-out rear tray tables as standard, which are optional on the Pro and Max+. Headrest-mounted speakers are integrated to deliver a spatial audio experience.

Practicality is aided by the 2,950 mm long wheelbase and short overhangs, maximising interior packaging. The second row features a flat floor alongside power-reclining backrests. The rear cargo area expands to an enormous 2,060 litres with the back seats dropped flat, easily accommodating outdoor lifestyle gear and bulkier luggage.

Safety and ADAS

The ONVO L60 offers two tiered Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) packages:

Pro Variant: Powered by a single NVIDIA Orin-X chip with 254 TOPS of compute, utilising a vision-only suite with 29 sensors. An over-the-air (OTA) update is scheduled for July 2026.

Max+ and Ultra+ Variants: Driven by NIO's bespoke 5nm automotive-grade "Shenji NX9031" autonomous driving chip, paired with roof-mounted LiDAR and 30 perception sensors, delivering sufficient processing headroom to support ADAS software updates over the next five years and beyond.

Leveraging the NIO World Model (NWM) and Coconut native AI agent architecture, the system enables point-to-point Navigate on Autopilot (including Urban NOA and Highway NOA), automated highway toll gantry passage, and fully autonomous navigation into battery swapping bays for automated battery replacement. The active safety suite encompasses 45 features, including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA).

For passive safety, the L60 is built with a high-rigidity safety cell incorporating 2,000 MPa submarine-grade hot-stamped steel, engineered to meet five-star C-NCAP and Euro NCAP crash safety benchmarks. Dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags are standard across the range, though the exact total airbag count has not been specified.

Market Performance and Reception

Since its market launch in September 2024, cumulative deliveries of the ONVO L60 have neared the 100,000-unit milestone, demonstrating healthy initial market traction. Monthly deliveries peaked in December 2024 at around 9,154 units (with another source citing 10,528 units). However, sales slowed substantially in early 2026, logging 1,978 units in January and 1,664 units in February, languishing below 2,000 units for two straight months. While sales began charting a recovery in March, volumes have yet to reach previous heights.

This sales plateau stems from several key market headwinds:

Low brand awareness remains the chief hurdle. William Li admitted that ONVO's brand recognition is comparable to NIO's standing six years ago, noting that "many car buyers are still completely unfamiliar with the ONVO badge." In the competitive RM200,000 electric SUV category, building brand recall requires sustained effort.

Intense price war in a saturated market. Li forecasted that the broader passenger vehicle retail market could contract by over 22% in 2026; despite NEV penetration hitting 70%, overall market expansion is stalling. Furthermore, 35% of ONVO buyers migrated from traditional premium marques, and 30% came from joint-venture petrol models—meaning nearly 65% are replacement buyers, intensifying the tussle for market share.

Upstream cost pressures on margins. Simultaneous cost spikes in semiconductor chips and raw lithium pushed production costs up by over RM10,000 per unit, translating to an estimated RM15,000 price impact at retail. Li noted that whilst the new ONVO L60 "remains gross-margin positive and isn't bleeding cash on every unit sold, operating conditions remain tight."

Strong resale value serves as a standout highlight, with the ONVO L60 currently topping value retention rankings among mid-size pure electric SUVs—a major competitive edge over its peers.

In terms of buyer demographics, roughly 85% of ONVO customers converted from other automotive brands: 35% traded in traditional luxury cars, 30% shifted from joint-venture ICE vehicles, 10% represented repeat NIO buyers, and another 10% migrated from range-extender (EREV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles.

The ONVO L60 goes head-to-head against key rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, XPENG G6, and ZEEKR 7X. Compared to these segment contenders, the L60 stands out with its class-leading 2,950 mm wheelbase, native 900V architecture, swap-and-go convenience, accessible BaaS entry pricing, and generous rear-seat appointments.

Summary

The ONVO L60 marks a strategic offensive by NIO to broaden its reach from the premium tier into the mainstream mass market, representing the first large-scale trickle-down of NIO’s core technology and battery swapping infrastructure. With its 900V electrical architecture, benchmark-setting 11.9 kWh/100 km efficiency, generous 2,950 mm wheelbase, and an accessible RM135,800 starting price via the BaaS scheme, it carves out a strong value proposition in the RM200,000 EV SUV landscape.

Nonetheless, the L60’s recent delivery dips demonstrate that superior technical specs alone do not guarantee instant commercial success. Muted brand equity, cut-throat market saturation, and supply-chain cost hurdles present ongoing challenges. William Li described ONVO's turnaround strategy as "building deep trenches and fighting steady battles"—focusing on retail fundamentals, customer experience, and test-drive conversions. In the second half of 2026, ONVO aims to expand its showroom footprint across lower-tier cities and roll out fifth-generation battery swap stations, with 1,000 new stations slated for completion within the year.

For prospective buyers, the ONVO L60 appeals to families seeking spacious practicality, low running costs, long real-world range, effortless battery swap convenience, and lower upfront outlay via battery subscription. In the competitive RM200,000 to RM250,000 EV space, backed by NIO’s technical heritage and charging ecosystem, the L60 offers a compelling balance of high-tech capability and sensible family motoring. Its ability to recapture sales momentum in the latter half of the year will ultimately depend on brand-building execution, showroom expansion, and wider consumer embrace of the battery swapping model.
