C-NCAP

2026-10-24 19:30:01

C-NCAP (China-New Car Assessment Programme) is an automotive crash safety evaluation system launched in 2006 by the China Automotive Technology and Research Centre Co., Ltd. (CATARC). As one of the most authoritative and influential vehicle safety standards in China, C-NCAP benchmarks international safety testing methodologies. Through standardised laboratory destructive crash tests, pedestrian protection evaluations, and active safety assessments, it delivers objective, fair, and transparent safety ratings for mainstream passenger vehicles sold in the Chinese market, serving as an essential safety reference for car buyers.

Core Technical Framework and Assessment Dimensions

Having undergone several iterative upgrades, the C-NCAP technical framework now comprises a comprehensive evaluation system spanning three core pillars: occupant protection, pedestrian protection, and active safety.

Occupant Protection & Full-Scale Crash Testing:

This covers a battery of stringent high-speed destructive crash protocols, including a 100% full-frontal rigid barrier impact, a 50% frontal offset mobile deformable barrier crash, a side mobile barrier impact, and a side pole crash test. By placing crash test dummies of various body profiles fitted with high-precision sensors inside the cabin, the test accurately measures the injury values sustained by critical areas such as the head, chest, and lower limbs upon impact. This provides an overall assessment of the cabin's structural rigidity, deformation resistance, and airbag restraint effectiveness.

Pedestrian Protection & Active Safety Assist Indices:

The pedestrian protection assessment conducts simulated impacts on targeted zones, including the front bumper, bonnet, and windscreen, evaluating their energy absorption and injury mitigation performance during a collision. Meanwhile, the active safety segment utilizes dedicated proving grounds and target vehicles to quantitatively score the response accuracy and hazard-avoidance capabilities of advanced driver assistance systems—such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC)—on a 100-point scale.

Safety Compliance and Physical Limitations

Prohibiting Targeted Reinforcement of Test Units While Compromising Mass-Production Quality Control:

C-NCAP star ratings directly influence a vehicle model's market reputation and sales performance. Automakers are strictly prohibited from submitting specially reinforced test vehicles built with higher-grade high-strength steel, bespoke thickened impact beams, or specialised welding techniques that deviate from standard showroom models (so-called "spec-cheating"). Carmakers must ensure that all mass-production units rolling off the line remain 100% consistent with the C-NCAP evaluated models in structural materials and build quality.

Prohibiting Blind Reliance on Five-Star Safety Ratings While Disregarding Real-World Driving Risks and Traffic Regulations:

Although C-NCAP crash protocols are rigorously standardised and highly authoritative, controlled laboratory test conditions cannot replicate every complex, unpredictable scenario seen in real-world road accidents. Motorists must never let their guard down, speed, or drive recklessly simply because a vehicle has secured a top "five-star" C-NCAP rating. No passive safety system, regardless of how advanced it is, can completely negate the physical trauma resulting from extreme speeding or reckless driving.
