The MG4 is an all-electric compact hatchback launched by SAIC Motor's MG brand, serving as the flagship vanguard under the marque's full-scale electrification strategy. On 29 August 2025, the all-new MG4 was officially launched at the Chengdu Motor Show in China across 5 variants, with official retail prices ranging from RM68,800 to RM102,800. Built on SAIC's dedicated Nebula pure-electric platform and positioned as a "smart, fun, and spacious EV hatchback", its main rivals include popular electric hatchbacks such as the BYD Dolphin and Geely Xingyuan.

Engineered as a truly global product, the MG4 is not only sold in China but also exported to Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia, and other international markets, achieving massive commercial success in Europe under the MG4 Electric moniker. In terms of dimensions, the 2025 all-new MG4 measures 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. Compared to the outgoing model (4,287 mm in length with a 2,705 mm wheelbase), it has grown substantially in every dimension, boosting rear legroom by 45 mm.

Design Language

The all-new MG4 carries forward MG's distinctive family design DNA, showcasing a sharp, aggressive, and athletic stance. Up front, it features a closed-off front fascia crowned with an illuminated MG badge for standout night-time presence. Dynamic matrix LED headlamps combine with the lower front intake to create a striking "X"-shaped visual signature, while sculpted bonnet creases and a gloss-black front splitter reinforce its sporty character. In profile, the car sports a short front overhang and long rear overhang layout paired with 5-spoke aerodynamic alloy wheels, striking a fine balance between spacious interior packaging and sleek styling. The rear end has been comprehensively redesigned to better suit the tastes of younger buyers.

Inside, the MG4 adopts the clean, minimalist aesthetic characteristic of modern new energy vehicles. Powertrain and Performance

The powertrain stands out as one of the MG4's headline attributes. The 2026 MG4 comes standard across the range with a potent 120 kW electric motor producing 250 N·m of torque, completing the 0-50 km/h sprint in just 3 seconds and 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds—performance figures that put it comfortably ahead of segment rivals. Crucially, the MG4 adopts an enthusiast-favourite rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout over the typical front-wheel-drive setup, which, combined with a 50:50 front-to-rear axle weight distribution, lays a solid foundation for exceptional dynamics.

On the battery front, the MG4 is equipped with the industry's first mass-produced semi-solid-state battery technology, elevating battery safety and energy density to new heights. The range offers multiple battery capacities and driving ranges: CLTC-rated range covers between 437 km and 530 km, with the 437 km variant starting at just RM68,800 to bring a 400 km-range EV under the RM70,000 mark, while the 530 km Smart Edition brings long-range capability into the RM90,000 bracket. In terms of charging efficiency, the MG4 supports 20-minute fast charging to juice the battery from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes, while delivering an ultra-frugal energy consumption figure of only 10.4 kWh per 100 km. In freezing conditions of -7°C, it retains up to 75% of its rated range—20% higher than the industry average—making it exceptionally dependable in cold climates. Additionally, a 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power supply function comes standard across the range, ideal for powering outdoor camping gear.

In terms of the digital cockpit, the MG4 comes standard across the lineup with automotive-grade Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 or 8156 chipsets, delivering immense computing power for the infotainment system. Central touchscreen sizes range from 12.8 to 15.6 inches depending on the variant, working seamlessly with the floating digital instrument cluster for an intuitive user experience. The infotainment operates smoothly with rapid response times, and the voice control system allows split-screen window zooming so navigation and multimedia run concurrently without interference.

On the comfort and convenience front, mid-to-high-spec variants (Freedom Edition and above) are generously equipped with a 50W air-cooled wireless smartphone charger, a 6-speaker audio system, 256-colour ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dedicated rear air-con vents (with a 27-degree seatback recline angle), a panoramic glass roof, and acoustic double-glazed glass. In ANCAP crash assessments, the MG4 Urban variant achieved 87% for Adult Occupant Protection, 86% for Child Occupant Protection, and 82% for Safety Assist. Passive safety is well-catered for with 6 airbags as standard, including dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, and a front centre airbag to prevent occupant head clash in severe side impacts.

The MG4's market performance is a textbook case of making huge waves overseas before finding its rhythm back home. In export markets, the EV became an overnight sensation across Europe starting in 2023, decisively claiming the top-selling compact EV crown from established names like Volkswagen and Tesla, with sales topping 10,000 units that year. In December 2025, the MG4 recorded a global monthly sales peak of 14,000 units, maintaining strong monthly deliveries between 14,000 and 15,000 units through March and April 2026. In contrast, its early sales run in its home market of China was comparatively modest; across the first 5 months of 2025, the MG brand registered just 42,800 units domestically, completing under 24% of its annual 180,000-unit target. However, following the debut of the all-new MG4 in August 2025, domestic monthly sales quickly surged past the 10,000-unit mark, with top-spec variants accounting for over 50% of volume—thoroughly shattering the market's perception of it being just a "cheap runabout".
