Design Language
The 2026 ID.3 retains the signature styling cues of the Volkswagen ID. family. The front fascia features a semi-enclosed design highlighted by full-width IQ.Light matrix LED headlights and an illuminated brand emblem for a high-tech visual identity. Its hatchback profile adopts classic EV platform proportions with short front and rear overhangs and an extended wheelbase, complemented by conventional door handles and gloss black side skirt claddings. Around the back, it features split LED tail lamp clusters, complemented by a roof spoiler and a high-mounted third brake light integrated above the rear windscreen.
In terms of exterior dimensions, it measures 4,261 mm in length, 1,778 mm in width, and 1,568 mm in height (4,266 mm long for GTX Package variants), with a 2,765 mm wheelbase. Courtesy of the MEB platform's packaging, the ID.3 achieves a D-segment-rivaling wheelbase within a compact 4.26-metre footprint, offering generous rear legroom that stands out in its class. The 2026 model gains restyled 18-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, with 20-inch items available as an option on the Ultimate Smart Edition. Exterior colour options comprise Star White, Ion Grey, Glacier Cyan, and Warm Cloud White, with a contrasting black roof fitted as standard across the range.
Inside, the cabin features a clean, symmetrical dashboard layout equipped with a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.9-inch floating infotainment touchscreen. Gear selection is handled via a steering-column-mounted electronic shifter. A "Twilight Symphony" interior theme comes standard across the board, while the "White Movement" scheme is optional on the Outstanding and Ultimate Smart variants. The GTX Package variants add extensive suede-like upholstery with contrast red stitching, alongside integrated sports seats with embroidered GTX logos on the headrests.
Powertrain and Performance
The 2026 ID.3 is powered by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor driving the rear wheels across all variants. It delivers a maximum output of 125 kW (around 170 PS) and 310 Nm of peak torque. It completes the 0-50 km/h sprint in roughly 3.1 seconds, ensuring punchy and responsive urban acceleration. Top speed is rated at 160 km/h.
Battery-wise, the 2026 ID.3 switches to a 53.6 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack sourced from CATL. This delivers a CLTC-rated pure electric driving range of up to 451 km. For DC fast charging, a 0% to 80% state of charge (SoC) takes around 0.75 hours (45 minutes), while AC slow charging requires approximately 9.5 hours. Combined energy consumption is rated at 13.4 kWh/100 km.
Chassis and Handling
Ride and handling remain among the ID.3's strongest selling points. The vehicle features a front MacPherson strut and rear five-link independent suspension setup. The rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration frees up front-end packaging while sharpening steering response and turn-in agility. The all-round independent suspension effectively soaks up road imperfections while keeping body roll well in check. It boasts a tight turning radius of just 5 metres, making it exceptionally manoeuvrable in congested city streets. The chassis setup delivers Volkswagen's renowned planted driving feel, widely lauded for its quintessential "German ride quality". Kerb weight is rated at approximately 1.76 tonnes.
Cabin and Equipment
In terms of in-car connectivity, the 2026 ID.3 runs on the ID OS 5.0 infotainment system, with the central touchscreen upsized from 10 inches to 12.9 inches. The voice command system is powered by iFlytek. The head unit supports satellite navigation, roadside assistance, 4G in-car connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, OTA software updates, and an on-board app store. For smartphone integration, it supports wired/wireless Apple CarPlay, CarLife, and HUAWEI HiCar. Front Type-C USB charging output has also been upgraded to 45W.
Convenience and comfort features include a standard panoramic glass roof with an electric sunblind, heated steering wheel, front keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control with an AQS air quality management system, a 7-speaker audio setup, and 30-colour ambient lighting. Seats are trimmed in a leather and fabric combination. Mid-to-high-spec variants add power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation functions. Boot space is rated at 385 litres.
Safety and Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the 2026 ID.3 comes equipped with 6 airbags as standard. Driver assistance is handled by the full-suite IQ.Drive advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), providing Level 2 (L2) semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The suite includes full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control with Predictive speed control (PACC), Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Centring Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition. Higher-spec models further gain advanced safety features such as Auto Brake Assist for junction turns (ABA) and Auto Warning and evasive steering assist (AWU). An AR-HUD (Augmented Reality Head-Up Display) is available on mid-to-high-spec variants. A direct tyre pressure monitoring display is standard from the 2025 model year onwards (replacing the previous basic tyre pressure warning system).
Market Performance and Reception
The Volkswagen ID.3 has witnessed a full cycle from peak popularity to a market cool-off in China. In 2024, total annual sales reached 93,816 units—averaging nearly 8,000 units monthly—making it one of the best-selling pure electric models from a joint-venture brand. However, sales momentum dropped sharply in 2025, peaking at just 5,601 units in March and ending the year with 38,737 units, marking a steep 59% year-on-year contraction. The downward trend continued into early 2026, registering 452 units in January and only 306 units in February.
Industry observers and motoring media attribute the decline to multiple factors. The 2025 update swapped out CATL's nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) ternary lithium battery for an LFP chemistry pack; despite a nominal 0.8 kWh capacity bump, driving range increased by just 1 km, leading many buyers to perceive it as cost-cutting. LFP batteries also suffer from more noticeable range drop-offs in cold climates, while DC fast charging time increased from 0.67 hours to 0.75 hours. Simultaneously, aggressive domestic rivals like the XPeng MONA M03 and Geely Galaxy E5 have flooded the RM100,000-class segment, putting immense pressure on the ID.3 across dimensions, in-car tech, spec levels, and electric range. Its starting price of RM129,888 has also struggled to remain competitive against feature-packed rivals.
Even so, the ID.3 continues to draw praise for its engaging driving dynamics and solid chassis refinement. Its rear-wheel-drive dynamics, five-link rear axle, and seasoned Volkswagen suspension tuning ensure it maintains a unique appeal for keen drivers. As the pioneering MEB platform model in China, the ID.3 has carved out a memorable niche in the hotly contested compact EV market with its signature blend of "German handling and pure electric rear-wheel drive."
