Chengdu Motor Show (officially CHENGDU MOTOR SHOW, commonly known as Chengdu Auto Show) is an international Class-A automotive exhibition jointly organised by the Chengdu Municipal People's Government and the Automotive Committee of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT-Auto). Founded in 1998, the annual 10-day event is staged from late August to early September at the Western China International Expo City. It is the largest automotive industry event in Western China accredited by UFI (The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry), firmly established as one of China's top four Class-A motor shows.
When the inaugural Chengdu Motor Show debuted at the Shawan Exhibition Centre in 1998, it occupied just 10,000 square metres of exhibition space with over a dozen brands, mostly represented by local dealers. To attract exhibitors and visitors, the organisers collaborated with local media to stage an "Auto Model Pageant" and self-funded the import of a stretched Lincoln "Great White Shark" from the United States as a star attraction, enabling the event to get off the ground against the odds. The scale of the show expanded rapidly over the years: carmakers began participating directly as principals at the 5th edition in 2002; exhibition quality saw a massive leap after relocating to the Century City New International Convention and Exhibition Centre in 2005; a strategic partnership with global trade fair giant Deutsche Messe AG (Hannover) in 2006 marked its push towards internationalisation; and in 2009, CCPIT-Auto officially accredited it as one of China's top four Class-A motor shows.
Held from 29 August to 7 September 2025, the 28th Chengdu Motor Show was themed "Leading the Trend, Driving the Future". Spanning an exhibition footprint of 220,000 square metres across 12 major indoor halls and outdoor arenas, the event brought together nearly 120 domestic and international marques, displaying over 1,600 vehicles. A total of 61 new car launches took place during the show, with 70 debut models unveiled.
This edition saw Chinese domestic brands commanding dedicated brand halls: Chery occupied Hall 5 exclusively, Changan headlined Hall 10, while BYD took over the entirety of Hall 9, fielding its complete brand portfolio encompassing Dynasty, Ocean, Fangchengbao, Denza, and Yangwang, alongside live dynamic demos of its "Eye of the Gods" intelligent driving system and a dedicated "Megawatt Flash Charge" technical zone. The exhibition also featured futuristic mobility tech including eVTOL flying cars and humanoid robotics, with Chengdu-based robotics firms hosting interactive live demonstrations.
On the consumer front, the show recorded a total footfall of 910,200 visitors, generating 33,745 vehicle bookings with an aggregate transaction value of RM5,753,000,000. The motor show also tied up with nearly 1,000 merchants across the city to roll out a "Ticket Stub Economy" campaign, offering ticket holders exclusive discounts across dining, hospitality, and cultural tourism landmarks to maximise city-wide economic spillover. Concurrently, the Chengdu municipal government launched multiple rounds of vehicle purchase incentives, supported by an integrated one-stop car buying service centre on-site.
The 29th Chengdu Motor Show is scheduled to return to the Western China International Expo City from 21 to 30 August 2026. The upcoming edition will introduce Western China's first dedicated scale model and automotive collectables zone, alongside national premieres, Southwest China debuts, and flagship "Made in Chengdu" models. In terms of technology showcases, breakthroughs including Huawei Qiankun ADS 5, 896-line LiDAR, 2nd-generation Blade Battery, megawatt-level ultra-fast charging, and Doubao LLM smart cockpits will take centre stage.
The rise of the Chengdu Motor Show has run in tandem with the Chinese automotive industry's transformation from catching up to leading the global market. Chengdu stands as China's No. 1 city in total vehicle population (exceeding 6,000,000 vehicles) and leads the nationwide city rankings in new car sales; this resilient consumer base serves as the cornerstone of the motor show's enduring success. Today, the Chengdu Motor Show is not only a vital nexus connecting the global automotive supply chain with central and western China, but also a definitive barometer of technological evolution, industry transformation, and market trends across China's automotive landscape.
