The BYD Dolphin is positioned as a premium urban all-electric B-segment hatchback (classified as a C-segment hatch in selected export markets). Amid the wave of EV adoption, it has earned a stellar reputation as the "ultimate daily runabout" and "the go-to first EV for young buyers". Its core highlights include a generous 2,700 mm wheelbase achieved via a "wheels-at-the-corners" packaging, the proprietary ultra-safe Blade Battery fitted as standard, and a distinctive marine-inspired cabin design featuring a wave-form dashboard and fin-styled interior door handles. In overseas markets, the Dolphin has successfully challenged established ICE rivals like the Honda City Hatchback/Jazz and Toyota Yaris, standing out as the preferred entry-level EV choice in developed markets thanks to its exceptional value for money.

Development History 

The evolution of the Dolphin reflects BYD's ongoing strategy of trickling down high-end technologies to continuously redefine the standards of compact urban runabouts.

Breakthrough and Mass Adoption (2021–2023): The Dolphin made its domestic debut in August 2021, quickly capturing the market with its clever space packaging and outstanding energy efficiency. In 2023, BYD introduced an export-spec "Global Edition" tailored for stringent overseas safety standards, featuring lengthened front and rear overhangs (adding roughly 20 cm in overall length), which successfully netted five-star safety ratings in both Euro NCAP and ANCAP crash tests. 

Honor Edition and Chassis Overhaul (2024–2025): In early 2024, the "Honor Edition" was rolled out, driving the entry price down to RM99,800 while notably upgrading the rear suspension to a multi-link independent setup across all variants to elevate ride comfort. By March 2025, a major domestic facelift was introduced with a slightly elongated body, a steering column-mounted gear selector (stalk shifter), and the integration of God's Eye C or DiPilot 100 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). 

2026 Full-Line Smart Driving Generation (2026 to Present): In the second quarter of 2026, the updated 2026 BYD Dolphin / Dolphin Smart Driving Edition made its official debut, introducing two breakthrough milestones:

RM100,000-Segment ADAS Benchmark: For the first time, an optional roof-mounted LiDAR is offered, fully harnessing BYD's "God's Eye" advanced driver assistance suite to bring Highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), complex urban traffic navigation, and advanced automated parking down to an accessible RM100,000-tier compact hatch.

Expanded "Sweet Spot" Powertrain: Positioned between the entry-level 70 kW motor and the 130 kW / 150 kW Knight/overseas variants, a new 100 kW (approx. 136 PS) powertrain was added, hitting the sweet spot between brisk highway overtaking punch and everyday urban efficiency.

In its domestic market, cumulative sales have comfortably surpassed hundreds of thousands of units, consistently reigning at the top of the A0-segment EV sales charts. On the global stage, it serves as a cornerstone of BYD's export offensive, achieving significant market presence in Thailand (where local assembly is underway at its Rayong plant), Malaysia, Singapore, Australia (spearheaded by the Dynamic Standard Range and Premium Extended Range variants), the UK, and continental Europe. Armed with a 5-star crash safety pedigree and a standard heat pump system (a crucial boon in colder climates), it has clinched numerous "Best Value Electric Car of the Year" accolades from leading European motoring publications.

EV Powertrain, Efficiency, and Chassis:

Battery Technology: Equipped as standard across the range with BYD's proprietary ultra-safe and durable Blade Battery. Battery capacities include 30.72 kWh, 44.9 kWh, 50.25 kWh (Thai-market specific), and 60.48 kWh for export extended-range models. CLTC combined range spans from 420 km to 520 km (up to 427 km WLTP for overseas variants), while maintaining an energy consumption of just 11–13 kWh/100 km.

Charging and Thermal Management: Fitted with a wide-temperature heat pump air-conditioning system as standard (substantially improving cold-weather range). DC fast charging accepts 60 kW up to 80–100 kW (for larger battery packs), enabling a 30% to 80% state of charge in as fast as 29 minutes, along with 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging functionality. 

Chassis: The entire lineup has transitioned to a MacPherson strut front and multi-link (four-link) independent rear suspension, completely ironing out the harshness of the previous torsion beam setup to deliver superior bump absorption and cornering stability.

Inside the cabin, digital appointments feature an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument cluster alongside a 12.8-inch rotating floating touchscreen running the DiLink infotainment system (export units feature seamless integration with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and native Google Maps). Higher-spec trims add a dual-mode heating/cooling mini-fridge, powered front seats with ventilation/heating functions, a wireless smartphone charger, and a panoramic glass roof. Safety-wise, alongside 6 standard airbags and a high-strength steel body structure (78.2% ratio), the 2026 Smart Driving Edition with optional LiDAR unlocks full-stack active safety including Highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), automated park assist, and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).

Future Plans 

Serving as the most agile spearhead in BYD's global expansion, the Dolphin's strategic roadmap over the next two to three years centres on "localised manufacturing expansion" and the "democratisation of advanced driver assistance". With BYD's manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand running at full steam and additional facilities in South America (Brazil) and Europe (Hungary) coming online, the overseas Dolphin lineup will transition from fully imported CBU units to localised CKD assembly, effectively circumventing import tariff barriers. Concurrently, LiDAR-based smart driving hardware and integrated vehicle electronic and electrical architectures will be gradually deployed on top-spec export variants, sustaining the Dolphin's edge in the global compact EV arena through high-tech democratisation.
