Overview

The MG S5 is an all-new fully electric C-segment SUV from SAIC MG. Regulatory filings for the model first surfaced in China's MIIT catalogue in July 2024, before making its public debut at the Chengdu Motor Show on 30 August of the same year. Built on SAIC's dedicated "Nebula" EV platform, the S5 is the second major offering on this architecture after the MG4 EV. Featuring a five-seater layout, the SUV measures 4,476 mm long, 1,849 mm wide, and 1,621 mm tall (with some homologation documents listing a height of 1,673 mm), riding on a 2,730 mm wheelbase. Sized similarly to the BYD Yuan PLUS (Atto 3), it sports classic EV proportions with short front and rear overhangs paired with a stretched wheelbase. Conceived as a global product, the S5 is slated for export to 90 countries and regions worldwide alongside the MG4 EV, including Europe. As of June 2026, the EV has gone on sale in China as well as selected international markets.
Exterior & Interior Design
The MG S5 adopts the brand’s signature "X-element" design language. Up front, it features the closed-off nose typical of pure EVs, anchored by a prominent MG octagonal badge in the centre. A split headlamp setup defines the fascia: slim, smoked LED daytime running lights sit on top, while the main projector clusters are integrated into the aggressive angular bumper intakes below. The lower bumper gets a sporty front apron with intricate mesh detailing, echoing design cues seen on the Cyberster electric roadster.
In profile, clean and taut lines dominate, highlighted by a sharp, continuous shoulder line running from the front wing to the rear. Bypassing the flush pop-out handles common on modern EVs, the S5 retains conventional pull-type door handles. Functional roof rails come fitted as standard, blending everyday utility with athletic flair. Around the back, the full-width LED light bar takes centre stage, sporting a darkened finish with downward-forked signatures on both ends for a high-tech vibe. A prominent roof-mounted spoiler and an integrated ducktail lip on the tailgate further accentuate its sporty posture.
Inside, the cabin takes a distinctly minimalist approach. The dashboard is anchored by a dual floating screen layout comprising a digital instrument cluster and a generous central infotainment touchscreen. Physical switchgear is kept to an absolute minimum, resulting in a sleek, clutter-free environment that mirrors current EV design trends. The centre console houses a rotary drive selector, twin cupholders, and a Qi wireless charging pad. The interior is dressed in a two-tone theme, complemented by a sporty flat-bottom, three-spoke steering wheel wrapped in perforated leather.
Powertrain & Performance
The MG S5 employs a rear-mounted single electric motor, making it the sole rear-wheel-drive (RWD) contender in its segment. The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) develops a maximum output of 125 kW (170 PS) and 250 Nm of peak torque. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.6 seconds, on to a top speed of 170 km/h. A more potent high-output variant pushing 245 PS is reportedly in the pipeline.
Juicing the motor is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack sourced from CATL or United Auto Battery System (UABS). Buyers can choose between 49.1 kWh and 62.2 kWh capacities, yielding a WLTP-rated driving range between 425 km and 446 km. On the DC fast charging front, the SUV accepts up to 150 kW, allowing a 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) top-up in around 26 minutes. AC charging is supported at up to 6.6 kW. Additionally, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging comes fitted as standard across the range.
Ride & Handling
Underneath, the MG S5 rides on front MacPherson struts and a sophisticated five-link independent rear suspension setup. Such a multi-link rear axle is a rarity in this price bracket, offering significantly higher headroom for both ride compliance and high-speed stability. The synergy of a rear-drive layout and multi-link rear suspension establishes the S5 as one of the few driver-focused choices in the compact EV SUV segment. The suspension tuning strikes a balance biased towards daily ride comfort, befitting its family SUV remit. Drivers can tailor the drive via selectable drive modes (including Sport), multi-level regenerative braking settings, and a dedicated one-pedal drive mode.
Infotainment & Practicality
On the tech front, the MG S5 comes standard across the board with the Banma Venus OS smart infotainment suite, displayed on a 10.25-inch touchscreen. The system integrates connected navigation and advanced voice control capabilities. Boot capacity stands at 462 litres in standard configuration, expandable to 1,423 litres with the rear seats folded down, complete with multi-tier compartmentalised underfloor storage for enhanced practicality. Higher-spec variants gain a 360-degree surround-view monitor, along with options such as dual-tone alloy wheels.
Safety & Driver Assistance
In terms of active safety, range-topping variants of the MG S5 can be had with a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite incorporating Lane Keep Assist (LKA). Notably, SAIC backs its proprietary battery pack with an impressive safety track record of "zero thermal runaway incidents across 300,000 global deliveries", underscoring its battery thermal management standards. Passive and active hardware options include an integrated forward-facing camera system.
Market Positioning & Outlook
The MG S5 goes straight up against established compact electric SUVs like the BYD Yuan PLUS (Atto 3) and Geely Galaxy E5. Its primary trump cards lie in its class-exclusive RWD architecture and the dynamic handling baked into its five-link independent rear suspension. Industry observers note that while MG continues to build momentum in the new energy vehicle (NEV) space, the S5's ultimate market success will largely hinge on aggressive pricing. In international markets, the MG S5 has been introduced to regions such as Malaysia via local assembly (CKD). All told, by leveraging SAIC's dedicated Nebula EV platform, a distinctive rear-wheel-drive dynamics focus, expressive styling, and global market pedigree, the MG S5 presents a standout alternative for modern EV buyers.
