MG4 EV

2026-09-20 22:10:01

The MG4 EV (codenamed EH32) is the first global all-electric C-segment hatchback from SAIC Motor's MG brand. Built on SAIC's dedicated Nebula electric vehicle platform (Modular Scalable Platform, MSP), the MG4 EV is engineered specifically for global markets. Featuring a distinctive rear-wheel-drive layout, compact exterior footprint, and generous cabin space, it serves as the strategic core model spearheading MG's full-scale transition towards electrification and international expansion.

Model Overview

More than just everyday transport, the MG4 EV is widely regarded as a benchmark for "technological democratisation" in the Chinese automotive industry. Measuring 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall with a generous 2,750 mm wheelbase, its ultra-short front and rear overhangs maximise interior packaging, establishing it as the gold standard among compact electric hatchbacks. Delivering an appealing balance of value for money, refined power delivery, and sharp handling dynamics, it competes directly on the global stage against mainstream rivals like the Volkswagen ID.3. Key selling points include an ideal 50:50 weight distribution courtesy of its dedicated EV architecture, an ultra-low centre of gravity of just 490 mm, and recently trickled-down semi-solid-state battery technology, striking an exceptional balance between driving performance and energy efficiency.

Development History

The MG4 EV was jointly developed by the SAIC Design Centre Shanghai, the London Advanced Design Studio, and the Royal College of Art.

Inception (2022): In June 2022, the hatchback made its domestic debut under the "MG Mulan" nameplate, before officially entering the European market as the MG4 EV the following month.

Key Milestones (2023–2025): In July 2023, the high-performance XPower variant was introduced, packing a dual-motor AWD setup capable of completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.8 seconds. In August 2023, the model name was globally unified as the MG4 EV. Over subsequent years, continuous FOTA (firmware-over-the-air) updates refined the in-car digital ecosystem, while addressing earlier customer feedback by adding a rear windscreen wiper and improving UI responsiveness.

Generation Update & New Tech Integration (2026): The 2026 model was officially launched, headlined by the introduction of a semi-solid-state battery variant (Anxin Edition) supplied by QingTao Energy. This technology boosts cell energy density to 180 Wh/kg, significantly enhancing driving range retention in cold climates and marking a major leap forward in battery chemistry for the MG4 EV.

Market Performance

The MG4 EV continues to demonstrate formidable competitiveness across domestic and export markets. In China, customer orders surpassed 10,000 units within 24 hours of the second-generation model's launch in 2025, firmly cementing its place among the top-tier best-selling electric hatchbacks. Internationally, as the spearhead of SAIC's export offensive, it has bagged multiple "Car of the Year" accolades across the UK, France, Australia, and Thailand, while consistently topping EV sales charts in several market segments. As of May 2026, its cumulative global sales make it a vital pillar of Chinese automotive exports.

Core Technologies

Architecture & Platform: Underpinned by the dedicated Nebula pure electric architecture, it adopts the ONE PACK "Rubik's Cube" battery system. Thanks to CTP (Cell-to-Pack) packaging, the battery pack measures a remarkably slim 110 mm in height, preserving ample rear passenger headroom despite the low-slung roofline.

Powertrain & Dynamics: Available in single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. Mainstream variants are powered by 120 kW or 170 kW electric motors, churning out between 250 Nm and 350 Nm of torque. The performance-oriented XPower variant belts out a massive 320 kW, and when paired with the XDS electronic differential lock, delivers class-leading agility and cornering traction.

Smart Cabin: The 2026 model receives a comprehensive tech upgrade featuring a 12.8-inch central infotainment touchscreen, alongside tactile physical rotary knobs for the air-conditioning and audio volume for effortless operation on the move. The MG Pilot advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) comes standard across the range, supporting Level 2 semi-autonomous driving functionality.

Battery Safety: In addition to higher energy density, the semi-solid-state cells offer outstanding puncture resistance in nail penetration safety tests. Backed by a five-tier progressive protection structure, the entire MG4 EV line-up comfortably achieves the top Euro NCAP five-star crash safety rating.

Future Plans

Moving forward, the MG4 EV's product roadmap will focus on reducing manufacturing costs and enhancing autonomous driving redundancy. In line with rising global demand for lightweight construction and higher-energy-density batteries, SAIC plans to roll out semi-solid-state battery solutions across more variants and introduce tailored spec levels in various international markets. This strategy aims to cater to a broader spectrum of buyers—from urban commuters to driving enthusiasts—ensuring the MG4 EV maintains its commanding presence in the global electric vehicle arena.
