2026-09-26 23:20:00

The BYD Tang DM (DM denotes Dual Mode, representing plug-in hybrid technology) is the flagship D-segment plug-in hybrid SUV under the BYD Dynasty series. First debuted in January 2015 as the world's first tri-engine, all-wheel-drive dual-mode SUV, the Tang DM set a technological benchmark for Chinese marques in the premium new energy SUV space. Through several facelifts and generational updates, the Tang DM line-up has expanded to include diverse variants such as the DM-i (efficiency-focused), DM-p (performance-oriented), Honor Edition, God of War Edition, and Intelligent Driving Edition, establishing one of the most prominent hybrid SUV portfolios from a Chinese automaker.

As of May 2026, cumulative deliveries of the Tang family (spanning both DM-i and EV derivatives) have crossed the 700,000-unit milestone, cementing its dominant position in the RM200,000 price bracket for new energy SUVs. In October 2025, the 2025 Tang DM-i, powered by fifth-generation DM technology, went on sale priced between RM179,800 and RM207,800. In February 2026, the Tang DM-i Intelligent Driving Edition 175KM Long Range model was launched, tagged from RM179,800 to RM199,800. Furthermore, additional Intelligent Driving variants were rolled out in the same month, extending the price range up to RM219,800 and completing a comprehensive line-up spanning entry-level trims to high-end LiDAR-equipped intelligent driving configurations.

Design Language

The Tang DM showcases the signature  "Dragon Face"  corporate design language penned by BYD's Global Design Director, Wolfgang Egger. The front end is dominated by a prominent "Dragon Mouth" polygonal dragon-scale grille, complemented by a full-width chrome trim strip running into the full-LED headlamp clusters to deliver a distinctive "Dragon Whisker" visual aesthetic; the triple LED projector units within evoke sharp, lively "Dragon Eyes". Down the sides, the vehicle displays sleek, muscular character lines paired with a floating roofline. At the rear, the full-width "Chinese Knot" LED taillight assembly features a dynamic sequential light-up graphic that fuses traditional cultural motifs with cutting-edge tech. Colour-wise, the 2025 update introduces a new "Weiyang Grey" national-trend paint scheme alongside an optional blacked-out styling pack (comprising gloss black alloy wheels, radiator grille, badges, and roof rails), while the 2026 Intelligent Driving Edition 175KM Long Range variant brings a Flowing Light Silver exterior and a Twilight Red interior theme.

Dimension-wise, the D-segment SUV measures 4,870 mm in length, 1,950 mm in width, and 1,725 mm in height, with a generous 2,820 mm wheelbase.

Inside, the 2025 model onwards adopts a wrap-around smart cockpit architecture anchored by a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch adaptive rotating floating central touchscreen. The cabin is trimmed extensively in premium soft-touch materials, accented by high-gloss inlays, chrome highlights, and ambient lighting. Higher-spec variants add a head-up display (HUD), active fragrance system, 50W wireless smartphone charging pad, heated steering wheel, and a 12-speaker Dynaudio premium sound system. Seating comes standard in a 2+3+2 seven-seat configuration (with a five-seat option available), featuring standard front-row seat heating and ventilation across the range, while mid-to-high variants gain 10-point front-seat massage functions as well as slide and recline adjustments for the second row. Boot capacity stands at 940 litres with the third-row seats folded flat, and folding both the second and third rows yields a flat loading bay extending up to 2.1 metres in length.

Powertrain and Performance

The Tang DM’s powertrain has evolved through five iterations since its initial 2015 tri-engine AWD layout (2.0T engine paired with dual electric motors). The 2025 Tang DM-i is powered by BYD’s fifth-generation DM PHEV system, marrying a  dedicated 1.5Ti high-efficiency turbo hybrid engine (45.3% thermal efficiency, generating 115 kW / approx. 156 PS) with an EHS200 electric hybrid drive system (front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 200 kW), delivering a combined system output of 310 kW. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.5 seconds, with top speed rated at 200 km/h.

Energy storage is handled by a 21.504 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery sourced from FinDreams, providing a CLTC pure electric range of 115 km and a total combined range of up to 1,150 km on a full tank and full charge. Depleted-battery fuel consumption is rated as low as 4.95 L/100 km under NEDC testing. The 2026 Intelligent Driving Edition 175KM Long Range variant adopts an upgraded battery pack with energy density raised to 114.9 Wh/kg, bumping CLTC pure electric range to 175 km and supporting up to 53 kW DC fast charging for significantly reduced turnaround times. The entire line-up accommodates 40 kW DC fast charging, AC charging, and standard 220V domestic trickle charging, with a 6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power supply function fitted as standard.

Meanwhile, the performance-biased Tang DM-p pairs a 1.5T engine with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system to produce higher power outputs, achieving a 0-100 km/h sprint time in just 4.3 seconds.

Chassis and Handling Dynamics

Chassis hardware on the Tang DM has seen major upgrades recently. From the 2025 model year, the entire range gains a five-link independent rear suspension layout, significantly mitigating body roll during cornering as well as pitch under hard acceleration and braking, thereby improving ride comfort and driving stability. FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) variable damping suspension comes standard across the board, automatically tailoring damper valving to road conditions to strike a balance between everyday suppleness and body roll control. Upper-trim variants feature the DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System, which regulates damper rates continuously via electromagnetic valves: softening up the ride over rough surfaces with high-frequency, low-damping settings, and firming up during aggressive cornering or heavy braking to effectively rein in pitch and roll. Additionally, lightweight aluminium alloy multi-link suspension links are standard across the range, reducing unsprung mass for sharper chassis response.

Steering is managed by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, braking is handled by ventilated front and solid rear discs, and parking functions are managed via an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold. Selectable driving modes include EV (pure electric), HEV series (range-extender mode), and HEV parallel (engine and electric motor driving in tandem).

Infotainment and Smart Cockpit

The Tang DM runs on BYD’s in-house  DiLink 100 Intelligent Cockpit Advanced Edition (Intelligent Driving trims receive DiLink 100, while earlier iterations were equipped with DiLink 4.0/5.0). Hardware includes a 6nm D100 chip (136K DMIPS computing capacity), enabling 5G connectivity, Over-The-Air (FOTA) updates, four-zone voice command recognition, and full-scenario continuous voice interaction. Operating speeds are swift and intuitive, supporting an extensive app ecosystem. Upper variants add smartphone integration and microphone-free in-car karaoke to elevate entertainment on the move. Certain trims offer an optional 50W wireless fast-charging pad and 10-point front-seat massage functionality.

From the second-to-base trim upwards, the Intelligent Driving Edition 175KM Long Range model also incorporates an on-board heating and cooling refrigerator (6.9-litre capacity, adjustable between -6°C and 50°C), supporting physical buttons, voice controls, and delayed shutdown after vehicle turn-off.

Safety and Driver Assistance (ADAS)

The Tang DM takes a significant leap forward in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The 2025 Tang DM-i Intelligent Driving Edition is equipped with two autonomous driving suites: Eye of the Gods B - High-Level Intelligent Driving LiDAR Edition (DiPilot 300) and Eye of the Gods C - High-Level Intelligent Driving Tri-Vision Edition (DiPilot 100). The hardware suite includes an in-house computing platform, 5 millimetre-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 12 surround-view cameras across the board, with the flagship Eye of the Gods B variant adding a solid-state LiDAR sensor.

On the functional front, all models support Highway Navigation on Autopilot (High-Speed NOA), covering automated highway entry/exit ramps, autonomous lane overtaking, sweeping curve navigation, indicator-activated lane changes, roadwork obstacle avoidance, and courtesy yielding; the top-tier LiDAR-equipped model adds City Navigation on Autopilot (City NOA), handling 10 urban driving scenarios including traffic light and countdown recognition, roundabout negotiation, and complex traffic flow merging. For parking, the range supports six automated parking modes covering over 300 scenarios, including narrow-lot remote parking, valet parking, and unmarked space parking.

In active safety, the Tang DM-i Intelligent Driving Edition features the standard TBC (Tyre Blowout Control) High-Speed Stability System: in the event of a tyre blowout at high cruising speeds (up to 190 km/h), the system responds in milliseconds by orchestrating active damping via DiSus-C and differential wheel braking to maintain lateral, longitudinal, and vertical stability. The Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system can detect stationary vehicles ahead and bring the vehicle to a full stop from speeds of up to 100 km/h.

Passive safety is underpinned by a high-tensile safety cage structure, equipped with dual front airbags, front side airbags, and front/rear full-length side curtain airbags (6 airbags total). Battery safety is anchored by the Blade Battery, which has passed the rigorous nail penetration test, complemented by an IPX8 waterproof rating for the battery enclosure to ensure maximum safety under extreme conditions.

Market Performance and Reception

The Tang DM has long been a frontrunner in China’s new energy SUV segment. In 2024, the Tang DM-i family registered 131,300 deliveries, finishing as the second best-selling SUV in the country for that year. By February 2025, cumulative Tang family sales crossed 700,000 units, cementing its status as a benchmark 7-seater SUV in the RM200,000 class. Technically, the Tang DM has earned strong industry praise: delivering 4.95 L/100 km depleted-battery consumption and 1,150 km total range via 5th-gen DM technology sets the benchmark for PHEV efficiency, while mass deployment of DiSus-C chassis control and DiPilot 300 ADAS reflects BYD’s engineering prowess in the premium segment.

Nevertheless, heading into 2025, the Tang DM faces intensifying market pressure from both inside and outside the brand. Deliveries stood at 5,995 units in December 2025 before softening notably in early 2026 to 601 units in January and 493 units in February. Externally, strong rivals like the AITO M7 continue to encroach upon the mid-to-high-end SUV space; internally, cannibalisation has emerged against showroom siblings with overlapping price tags, including the Song L DM-i and Sea Lion 06 DM-i. Additionally, rapid-fire model updates and aggressive price adjustments with higher equipment levels have drawn mixed feedback from early buyers, impacting customer goodwill to an extent.

On the whole, the BYD Tang DM stands as a pioneer and benchmark among Chinese-brand plug-in hybrid SUVs. Its ten-year evolutionary journey has profoundly shaped the competitive landscape of the hybrid SUV market. As widely reflected in owner reviews, the Tang DM hits the sweet spot for family buyers thanks to its practical 7-seater packaging, low 5-litre/100 km real-world hybrid fuel economy, and comprehensive, class-transcending equipment list—attributes that define the commercial success it has achieved.
