All-electric smart #2 launches in China: Electric two-seater returns, two variants, 410km CLTC range, 20-minute fast charging

The smart #2 marks the return of the brand's iconic two-seat city car. Following its global debut at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, the new model has gone on sale in China, with the limited-run Couture Edition priced at RMB112,999 (approximately HK$133,000).

Production of the Couture Edition is limited to 999 units. A second version, the Premium Edition, is scheduled to launch in early November, with its price yet to be announced.

Two variants in China

The smart #2 is available in China in two variants:

Inspired by Haute Couture, the Couture Edition features an Atelier White Matte exterior paint with a Platinum Gold roof. Other exclusive details include gold-finished exterior accents, 16-inch Lyra rims with gold details and a numbered commemorative plaque.

Production is limited to 999 units each for China and Europe.

Mercedes-Benz design

The new smart #2 was designed by the Mercedes-Benz global design team, drawing on the proportions of the original two-seat smart concept first displayed at the Louvre in Paris in 1996.

The Couture Edition measures 2,764 mm long, while the Premium Edition is slightly shorter at 2,751 mm. Both are less than three metres long and feature a wheels-at-each-corner layout designed to make the most of the cabin space.

A two-piece tailgate adds practicality. The upper glass section can be opened independently when space is limited, while the lower section folds down to form a loading platform. It can also double as a seat when parked, with a maximum load capacity of 120 kg.

Inside, the smart #2 features a bench-style front seat and an S-shaped wraparound cockpit.

35.8kWh CATL battery, up to 410km range

Power comes from an integrated 11-in-1 electric drive system producing up to 60kW. The car uses a 35.8kWh lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by CATL, with a claimed CLTC range of up to 410km.

DC fast charging is supported at up to 65kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality is also included.

For Europe, the target WLTP combined range is approximately 290km. Final figures will depend on local certification.

Built for tight city streets

Compact dimensions are only part of the smart #2's appeal. The car also features a claimed turning radius of just 3.35 metres, making it easier to manoeuvre through narrow streets and into tight parking spaces.

Other chassis and performance features include:

• 3.35-metre turning radius for easier low-speed manoeuvring
• Five-link independent rear suspension to improve handling stability
• Staggered tyre set-up, with narrower tyres at the front and wider ones at the rear
• Top speed of 140km/h, allowing it to travel on motorways as well as city roads
• Underfloor battery layout for a lower centre of gravity

Tridion Cell Evo safety structure

The smart #2 uses the latest Tridion Cell Evo high-strength safety structure, an evolution of the safety concept that has long been part of the brand's identity.

Driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-change assistance and parking assistance.

Both the Couture and Premium editions come with a panoramic glass roof, a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, an 8.8-inch instrument display, 256-colour ambient lighting, heated seats and steering wheel, and a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system.

The smart #2 brings back the brand's signature two-seater, with a focus on compact dimensions, distinctive design and urban manoeuvrability. Its 60kW motor, 410km CLTC range, 20-minute fast-charging time and 3.35-metre turning radius give it a clear city-focused brief.

Unlike budget-focused micro EVs such as the Wuling Mini EV, the smart #2 places greater emphasis on design, brand identity and driving refinement.
