Tesla Model Y vs Model 3 in Hong Kong: Why is the SUV outselling the sedan by more than six to one in Hong Kong?

Both are Teslas, both are fully electric, but why is the Model Y selling so much better than the Model 3 in Hong Kong?

September's sales figures tell the story. The five-seat Model Y sold 52 units, placing ninth, while the seven-seat Model Y L took seventh place with 66 units. Together, the two versions recorded 118 sales. The Model 3, meanwhile, sold just 17 units and ranked 30th — giving the Model Y range a lead of almost seven to one.

Pricing

Let's start with the prices. According to BitAuto Hong Kong's vehicle database, the Model 3 starts at HK$321,300 including tax, while the Model Y starts at HK$413,407 — a difference of just over HK$92,000.

The Model 3 is available in four variants: Standard Rear-Wheel Drive (HK$205,000), Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (HK$224,100), Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive (HK$242,100) and Performance All-Wheel Drive (HK$269,910).

For the Model Y, Tesla's Hong Kong website currently highlights the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive version, priced from HK$254,520, alongside the Model Y L.

Performance

The Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel Drive can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, with a WLTP range of 660–715 km depending on wheel size and a top speed of 201 km/h.

The entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive version takes 6.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h and offers a WLTP range of 572 km.

The Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, meanwhile, has a WLTP range of 466 km and supports DC fast charging at up to 250 kW. According to Tesla, 15 minutes of Supercharging can add up to 288 km of range.

The seven-seat Model Y L comes with dual-motor all-wheel drive, a claimed CLTC range of 776 km and a 0–100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds.

In short, the Model 3 is the pick for those who prioritise acceleration and driving enjoyment, while the Model Y makes more sense if space and practicality come first.

Space

This is arguably the biggest difference between the two.

As a sedan, the Model 3 has a lower roofline, with less rear headroom and luggage space. The Model Y's taller SUV body offers more room for rear passengers and a larger boot, while its folding rear seats provide additional flexibility when carrying bulky items.

The Model Y L goes a step further with a seven-seat configuration, seating for up to six occupants and up to 2,539 litres of storage space. It also features a 16-inch central touchscreen and an 8-inch touchscreen for second-row passengers.

For families in Hong Kong, the extra space and seating flexibility make the Model Y range a more practical choice than a conventional sedan.

September sales

September's sales figures reveal three very different trends:

• Model 3: 17 units, down 55.3% month on month.
• Model Y (5-seat): 52 units, up 30% month on month.
• Model Y L (7-seat): 66 units, down 51.1% month on month.

Although Model Y L sales fell sharply, August had set a high base following the launch of the new model. Even after the decline, its September sales were nearly four times those of the Model 3.

The five-seat Model Y, on the other hand, recorded a 30% increase, suggesting that demand for mid-size electric SUVs remains strong among Hong Kong buyers.

The same pattern can be seen globally, where the Model Y has consistently outsold the Model 3. Much of its appeal comes down to the everyday advantages of an SUV: a higher driving position, more passenger room and greater practicality for families.

Parking is another consideration in Hong Kong. The Model 3 is shorter and easier to park, but the Model Y, at around 4,750 mm long, is not significantly longer and can fit into most standard parking spaces.

With relatively little difference in parking convenience, many buyers may find the Model Y's extra interior space worth choosing over the Model 3.
