Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Debuts as First Electric GTI – 223 HP, 424 km WLTP Range

On May 15, marking the 50th anniversary of the original Golf GTI, Volkswagen officially unveiled the ID. Polo GTI at the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race. The iconic GTI badge adorns a production electric vehicle for the first time, signalling a new electrified chapter for the legendary performance lineage.

Built on the MEB Entry platform, the ID. Polo GTI retains the classic front‑engine, front‑wheel‑drive layout. Its permanent‑magnet synchronous motor delivers 166 kW (223 hp) and 290 N·m of torque, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint of just 6.8 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 175 km/h. The 52 kWh ternary lithium battery provides a WLTP range of up to 424 km and supports 105 kW DC fast charging, replenishing from 10% to 80% in 24 minutes.

Volkswagen equips the ID. Polo GTI with an electronic front‑axle limited‑slip differential, DCC adaptive chassis and progressive steering. A dedicated GTI button on the steering wheel instantly switches the powertrain, suspension and steering to their most aggressive settings.

Design‑wise, the ID. Polo GTI retains classic GTI styling cues while embracing electric-era efficiency. A full‑width red stripe spans the closed front grille, with an illuminated VW logo and honeycomb mesh inserts. Standard 19‑inch two‑tone wheels, red brake calipers and a split rear spoiler sharpen the hot hatch stance. Interior highlights include tartan‑pattern bucket seats, a flat‑bottomed steering wheel with red centre marker, and a 10.25‑inch digital instrument cluster with a “Retro Mode” that mimics the original Golf GTI’s analogue dials. Physical buttons are retained below the central 12.9‑inch touchscreen, enhancing usability.

Pricing starts at approximately €39,000 (around RMB 310,000), with first European deliveries expected in late 2026. The ID. Polo GTI will compete with the MINI JCW E and Alpine A290, offering superior power, range and charging speed.

For Hong Kong enthusiasts, the availability of a right‑hand‑drive version remains unconfirmed. Given the UK’s strong hot‑hatch market, a RHD variant is still possible. If homologated under Hong Kong’s “One‑for‑One Replacement” EV scheme, the on‑road price would likely fall between HK350,000andHK350,000andHK400,000. Volkswagen Hong Kong has yet to announce any RHD timeline or certification progress.
