SAIC Volkswagen officially released the first official images of the ID. ERA 5S on May 11. The second model in the ID. ERA family and the brand's first sedan, the 5S is built on the all-new CEA electrical/electronic architecture. It is equipped with the "Xingyun Zhixing" advanced driver-assistance system and the "Yunqi Zhicang" intelligent cockpit. The number "5" signifies its mid-to-high sedan positioning, while the "S" stands for both "Sedan" and "Smart." With a plug-in hybrid powertrain delivering over 2,000 km of combined range, the 5S fills a key gap in the 100,000–150,000 RMB intelligent plug-in sedan segment.

Sporty Design Language: Fastback Styling with Smart Driving Blue Lights
The 5S inherits the minimalist aesthetic of the ID. ERA family, featuring a dynamic fastback roofline. The closed front grille is combined with a full-width LED daytime running light strip and an illuminated VW badge. Angular LED headlights, a sporty lower intake, a smooth waistline, semi-concealed door handles, and a full-width rear LED light bar complete the athletic design. Blue indicator lights integrated into the side mirrors and rear lamps serve as visual markers for the advanced ADAS system.
Yunqi Zhicang Cockpit: Curved Displays + PDLC Panoramic Roof

The "Yunqi Zhicang" cockpit is a major highlight. It features a wraparound dashboard with a large 3D curved display, an co-pilot entertainment screen, and a responsive voice assistant supporting natural continuous dialogue. The PDLC panoramic glass roof offers -zone independent dimming, switching from transparent to frosted modes. A B&O premium audio system and premium soft-touch materials enhance the cabin's luxurious feel.
Xingyun Zhixing ADAS: World's First VW Sedan with Urban NOA

The 5S comes standard with the "Xingyun Zhixing" ADAS, supporting both highway NOA and urban NOA—making it the first Volkswagen sedan globally to offer urban NOA capability. The system handles stop-and-go traffic, autonomous intersection navigation, lane changes, obstacle avoidance, and roundabouts. Based on the CEA architecture (co-developed by Volkswagen China Technology Company, CARIAD China, and XPeng), the solution avoids lidar hardware in favor of a vision-dominant, multi-sensor fusion approach to keep costs manageable while enabling full-vehicle OTA updates.
Powertrain: 160 km Electric Range, Over 2,000 km Combined Range

The 5S uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine (80 kW max power, 77 kW net) with an electric motor peaking at 130 kW. The lithium iron phosphate battery is produced by Ruipu Lanjun Energy and assembled by SAIC Times Power Systems. CLTC all-electric range is 160 km, sufficient for daily urban commuting on electricity alone. Combined range exceeds 2,000 km, while fuel consumption in depleted mode is just 2.82 litres per 100 km. The 5S has a curb weight of 1,655 kg and a top speed of 165 km/h.
Chassis and Safety: German Tuning DNA with Rigorous Crash Standards
The rear multi-link independent suspension incorporates lightweight hollow control arms. Volkswagen's crash-test protocols (71 tests, 64 km/h small-offset) ensure A-pillar structural integrity under extreme collisions while retaining ample occupant survival space.
Market Positioning and Outlook

The 5S enters the competitive 100,000–150,000 RMB sedan segment, directly challenging the BYD Qin L (96,800 RMB) and Dongfeng Nissan N6 (103,900 RMB). With standard urban NOA and over 2,000 km of range, Volkswagen seeks to leverage brand heritage, rigorous safety standards, and German engineering to compete with domestic market leaders. Production will take place at SAIC Volkswagen's Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone plant.
Outlook for the Hong Kong Market
If officially imported to Hong Kong and qualified for the "One-for-One Replacement" EV First Registration Tax scheme, the 5S's expected 100,000 RMB price would translate to approximately HK$110,000. This would position it directly against the BYD Qin L and Nissan N6 in Hong Kong's affordable NEV sedan segment. However, SAIC Volkswagen Hong Kong has not yet announced any import timeline, right-hand-drive development progress, or distributor plans for the local market.
