All-New Hongqi H7 Spied – A 5-Meter Executive Sedan with 1.5T Plug-In Hybrid Power

Among Chinese automotive brands, Hongqi holds a special place. It is not just a "state car"; it is a symbol. On April 9, the all-new Hongqi H7 appeared in the latest MIIT filing. This executive sedan, over 5 meters long with a wheelbase approaching 3 meters, features the brand's signature semi-closed front grille and vertical Hongqi logo, powered by a 1.5T plug-in hybrid system paired with an LFP battery.

For Hong Kong users, the arrival of the new Hongqi H7 raises a key question: when a mid-to-large executive sedan carrying a "state-level" solemn presence debuts with plug-in hybrid power, a 5-meter length, and a 2,970mm wheelbase, and when its design language echoes ultra-luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley, can it establish a foothold in Hong Kong's executive sedan market?

Design Language: Balancing Solemnity and Technology

The new Hongqi H7 adopts the brand's family design language. The semi-closed front grille, with its vertical hollow air intakes and the central vertical Hongqi logo, creates a solemn, grand visual impact. The split headlights and semi-concealed door handles strike a balance between tradition and modernity. The rear features elongated taillights with the Chinese "Hongqi" badge, while black trim on the lower bumper adds a sporty touch.

The dimensions are 5,060mm in length, 1,910mm in width, and 1,480mm in height, with a 2,970mm wheelbase. This places it squarely in the mid-to-large executive sedan segment, comparable to the BMW 5 Series (approx. 2,975mm) and Mercedes E-Class (approx. 2,961mm). The 2.97m wheelbase, combined with a standard five-seat layout, provides generous rear passenger space. For Hong Kong users, the 5.06m length is manageable on local streets, while the 2.97m wheelbase offers ample interior space for business or family needs.

Powertrain: 1.5T Plug-In Hybrid with LFP Battery

The new Hongqi H7 is powered by a 1.5T engine (model CA4GB15TDH-36, 110kW) paired with an LFP battery pack. Although official electric range figures have not been released, comparable models suggest an electric range of 80-120km and a combined range exceeding 1,000km. For Hong Kong users, the value of a plug-in hybrid lies in "electric for daily, petrol for long trips." With a daily commute of 30km, a 100km electric range covers three days of local driving; for longer journeys, the engine seamlessly takes over, eliminating range anxiety. The choice of LFP batteries also ensures safety and cycle life.

Market Positioning: From "State Car" to Global Contender

Hongqi's brand recognition in Hong Kong lags behind German luxury marques like BMW and Mercedes. However, the Hongqi H9 has already been sold in Hong Kong through import channels, attracting a niche of buyers seeking individuality with its unique solemn presence and relatively accessible pricing. The new H7 is positioned below the H9, with an estimated price of RMB 200,000-250,000 (approx. HKD 210,000-270,000). If an RHD version were introduced, after First Registration Tax, the on-road price could reach HKD 350,000-450,000. This would place it directly against the BMW 3 Series (from HKD 400,000), Mercedes C-Class (from HKD 420,000), and Tesla Model 3 (from HKD 350,000). The H7's advantages include its unique solemn design, larger dimensions (5.06m vs. the 3 Series' 4.7m), lower running costs thanks to the plug-in hybrid system, and the cultural added value of the "state car" brand. Challenges include brand recognition and resale value.

Hong Kong Market: A New Option in the Executive Sedan Segment

Hong Kong's executive sedan market has long been dominated by the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Audi A6. These models hold most of the market share due to their strong brand heritage and proven product strength. However, with the rise of new energy vehicles, consumer expectations are shifting. Range, intelligence, and running costs are becoming key purchase criteria. The new Hongqi H7's plug-in hybrid powertrain aligns with this trend.

The "One-for-One" EV tax concession scheme ended on March 31, 2026. From April 1, newly registered EVs are subject to full progressive First Registration Tax. Plug-in hybrids benefit from lower tax rates, but the final on-road price will still be higher than in the mainland. The H7's PHEV version could attract buyers seeking individuality and cost-effectiveness with its lower running costs and distinctive design.

Competitive Landscape: Differentiated Competition with German Luxury

In the RMB 200,000-300,000 (approx. HKD 210,000-320,000) price bracket, the H7's main rivals are domestic NEVs like the BYD Han DM-i and Zeekr 007. However, the H7's executive positioning and solemn design create a differentiated niche compared to these sportier or tech-focused models. For Hong Kong users, the H7 offers a "state-level" travel experience. Whether for business or family use, this car conveys a unique presence.

Personal Opinion

Looking at the new Hongqi H7's filing information, my strongest impression is that "Hongqi is deeply integrating solemnity with technology." The semi-closed grille, vertical logo, and split headlights preserve the brand's classic DNA while injecting a sense of modernity. The 1.5T plug-in hybrid system makes this executive sedan more economical and environmentally friendly for daily use. For Hong Kong users, the new Hongqi H7 offers a compelling choice that combines solemn presence, plug-in efficiency, and accessible pricing. When the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class often cost over HKD 500,000, and the Tesla Model 3's design is perhaps too minimalist, the Hongqi H7 could become the "individual choice" in Hong Kong's executive sedan market. Of course, RHD availability and final pricing remain key variables. But if FAW Hongqi successfully introduces the new H7 to Hong Kong, it could become a fresh force in the local executive sedan segment. For Hong Kong buyers considering their next car, this model is worth watching.
