BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase Spied: Is Hong Kong's "Chauffeur Dream" Finally Coming True?

BMW has made a contrarian move in its electrification transition: stretching the wheelbase of the next-generation iX3 by 108mm to 3,005mm, and allocating all the extra space exclusively to the second row. This Chinese-produced all-electric SUV, set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show, directly answers a simple question: for a good family electric car, should it prioritize the driver or the passengers? For Hong Kong users, this answer may directly determine whether they are willing to pay for a BMW EV.

Spatial Revolution: The Sincerity of a 108mm Rear Extension

The dimensions of the new iX3 Long Wheelbase are 4,885mm in length, 1,895mm in width, and 1,635mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,005mm. A 108mm extension might not sound dramatic, but in terms of rear legroom, it transforms from a "fist" to a "palm." Compared to the cramped rear seats of the current iX3, the new model's rear experience will evolve from "adequate" to "comfortable." In Hong Kong's market, where the rear seat often dictates purchase decisions—whether for family, clients, or as the sole family car—rear space is a critical factor. BMW has finally realized that luxury in the electric era should not belong only to the driver.

Externally, the iX3 Long Wheelbase retains the new-generation design language: the 3D Illuminated Grille, the Hofmeister kink evolved into the "Mirror Kink," the L-shaped taillights, and the "Feather Light" taillights with an infinite gradient effect, presenting a powerful 3D dynamic appearance. These elements preserve BMW's classic DNA while injecting a sense of technology for the electric age.

Range and Performance: The Technical Confidence of 900km + 800V Platform

The new iX3 is powered by the sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, featuring large cylindrical cells, a self-developed energy management system, and a new motor combination, all supported by an 800V high-voltage platform. The CLTC range exceeds 900km. In extreme testing, it traveled over 1,007km from Debrecen, Hungary, to Munich, Germany, with 2% battery remaining. A 900km range means a direct trip from Hong Kong to Xiamen without recharging, or a month's commuting and weekend trips on a single charge. The dual-motor setup produces 116kW (front) and 235kW (rear). The 800V platform enables ultra-fast charging, greatly improving replenishment efficiency. For Hong Kong drivers who frequently travel north, this range completely eliminates range anxiety.

Hong Kong Market: From "Driver's Car" to "Family Car"

BMW's brand image in Hong Kong has long been associated with "handling" and "driving pleasure." However, in the electric era, consumer expectations for luxury EVs are shifting. Range, space, and intelligence are gradually replacing acceleration times as key purchase criteria. The iX3 Long Wheelbase's stretched design is BMW's response to this trend.

In 2025, BMW sold 1,901 vehicles in Hong Kong, ranking 6th, behind BYD, Tesla, and Zeekr. While BMW still has appeal among luxury brands, the rise of domestic EV startups is eroding its market share. The iX3 Long Wheelbase could help BMW regain ground in the competitive luxury electric SUV segment.

Challenges remain. The "One-for-One" EV tax concession scheme ended on March 31, 2026. From April 1, newly registered EVs are subject to full progressive First Registration Tax rates: 46% on the first HKD 150,000, 86% on the next HKD 150,000, 115% on the following HKD 200,000, and 132% on the remainder. The iX3 Long Wheelbase is expected to be priced between RMB 400,000-500,000 (approx. HKD 430,000-540,000). If introduced in right-hand drive, after full tax, the on-road price could reach HKD 700,000-900,000. This would put it directly against the Mercedes EQC, Audi Q8 e-tron, and Tesla Model Y Performance. The iX3's advantages are its brand halo, 900km range, and extended wheelbase; its disadvantages are price competitiveness and charging network convenience.

Personal Opinion

Looking at the iX3 Long Wheelbase's filing information, my strongest impression is that "BMW has finally understood the Chinese market." Lengthening the wheelbase and enhancing rear-seat experience – strategies that worked in the combustion era – have now been applied to an EV. For Hong Kong users, the iX3 Long Wheelbase offers a compelling combination of German quality, long range, and generous space. When BMW starts attracting family buyers with "extended rear seats," and when a 900km range eliminates range anxiety, this car could become a game-changer in Hong Kong's luxury electric SUV market. Of course, RHD availability and final pricing remain key variables. But if BMW shows pricing sincerity, the iX3 Long Wheelbase could become another common sight on Hong Kong's streets, joining the i4 and iX as popular BMW EVs.
