Mercedes-Benz at Beijing Auto Show: All-Electric GLC and New S-Class Redefine Luxury

At the 2026 Beijing International Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz will showcase two pivotal models: the world premiere of the all-electric GLC SUV and the China debut of the new-generation S-Class. These vehicles reflect Mercedes' strategic response to electrification and intelligent luxury, while also raising key questions for the Hong Kong market.

All-Electric GLC: Long Wheelbase, Six Seats, 800V

Built on the new MB.EA platform, the all-electric GLC features a wheelbase stretched to 3,027mm and an overall length approaching 5 meters (4,949mm). For the first time in this segment, Mercedes offers an optional six-seat layout. This directly addresses the demand for spacious, multi-passenger family vehicles in Hong Kong. Compared to rivals like the BMW iX3 and Audi Q6 e-tron, the GLC's rear-seat space and seating flexibility provide a distinct advantage. The exterior retains signature Mercedes elements, including a closed illuminated grille and star-pattern lights.

The dual-motor version produces 163kW and 300kW respectively, and the 800V electrical architecture ensures fast charging. However, Hong Kong's expiry of the "One-for-One" EV tax concession on March 31, 2026, means new EVs are subject to full progressive First Registration Tax, with rates as high as 132% for the portion exceeding HKD 500,000. The GLC's estimated price of RMB 400,000-500,000 (approx. HKD 430,000-540,000) would rise significantly after tax. Despite this, its brand cachet, long wheelbase, and six-seat option will appeal to quality-conscious families.

New S-Class: The Pinnacle of Technological Luxury

The new S-Class debuts with an illuminated grille, larger dimensions, and digital headlights using micro-LED technology, reducing energy consumption by 50% while extending range by 40%. The interior features a "Super Screen" merging the 14.4-inch central display and 12.3-inch passenger screen, with a privacy mode for the passenger display. The rear offers first-class independent seats with 43.5-degree recline and 50-degree leg rest adjustment, plus a 13.1-inch dual-screen entertainment system.

The Burmester 4D surround sound system has 39 speakers and 4 seat exciters. Powertrains include optimized V8 and inline-6 engines with 48V mild-hybrid systems. Rear-axle steering (up to 10 degrees each way) significantly reduces the turning circle. The S-Class also features urban and highway navigation assistance, enabling parking space-to-parking space assisted driving in China.

Hong Kong Perspective

For Hong Kong, the all-electric GLC offers a compelling family SUV option, but its final price after full FRT will be steep. Mercedes' charging network in Hong Kong is less developed than some rivals. The S-Class, despite its technological prowess, faces challenges from EVs like the Tesla Model S and BMW i7. Its 5.3-meter length is cumbersome on Hong Kong's narrow streets, though rear-axle steering helps. Still, the S-Class's brand prestige and exclusive features will likely maintain its appeal among top-tier executives and VIPs.

Personal Opinion

The GLC and S-Class together showcase Mercedes' dual-track approach: electrifying the volume segment while doubling down on technological luxury in the flagship. For Hong Kong buyers, the GLC's space and six-seat layout are major draws, but affordability remains an issue. The S-Class continues to set the benchmark for luxury sedans, though its size and the shift toward EVs pose challenges.

Ultimately, both models demonstrate that Mercedes understands the need to adapt to local market demands—whether through longer wheelbases or smarter technology. For Hong Kong, the arrival of these vehicles signals that the era of electric luxury is accelerating, and the choice for consumers will increasingly hinge on how well each brand addresses real-world usability.
