Aion RT Swappable Battery Version Launches April 8: A 99-Second Solution to Range Anxiety?

On April 8, GAC Aion will launch the RT swappable battery version, bringing "99-second full charge" efficiency to the competitive 100,000 RMB class EV sedan market. For Hong Kong users, where the "One-for-One" tax concession has ended, this new model offers a vision of "refueling-like" speed. However, the reality of a nascent swapping network raises questions about whether this is a genuine revolution or just marketing hype.

The RT Swappable Battery: Fast Charging at an Affordable Price

The RT's core selling point is its CATL "Chocolate" battery swap system, an automated process that takes just 99 seconds . It retains the same core electrics as the current model, featuring CATL's lithium iron phosphate 2.0 battery in 55.1kWh and 68.1kWh capacities, delivering CLTC ranges of 520km and 650km . The existing RT lineup is priced between RMB 99,800 and RMB 123,800. This pricing strategy brings swappable battery technology to the mass market for the first time.

The Reality of the Swapping Network: Chocolate Still on the Way

However, the success of this model depends on the supporting network. CATL plans to build over 3,000 swap stations in mainland China in 2026, with a long-term goal of 30,000 . For Hong Kong users, the situation is less developed. The first CATL swap station is located at Fanling in the New Territories, with plans for only 6 to 10 stations by the end of 2026, reaching 14 covering core areas by 2027. For most urban residents, the convenience of a 99-second swap may be out of reach in the short term.

GAC Aion in Hong Kong: Building Momentum

Despite infrastructure challenges, GAC Aion is gaining significant traction in Hong Kong. In January 2026, Aion led Hong Kong's private car brand growth with a 714.9% year-on-year increase. In February, Aion ranked third in Hong Kong's EV brand sales, second among Chinese brands . In March, GAC's Hong Kong sales approached 2,000 units, with over 2,500 registration applications submitted. This data suggests that Hong Kong consumers are increasingly receptive to the Aion brand.

The Practical Reality for Hong Kong Drivers: Charging vs. Swapping

For Hong Kong drivers, the RT's advantages and limitations are clear. The end of the "One-for-One" scheme has increased EV purchase costs . While public chargers are growing, fast-charging infrastructure remains unevenly distributed. In theory, battery swapping could solve these issues. However, with a limited number of swap stations, the RT will, for most users, function primarily as a conventional EV. The "charge or swap" dual-mode design offers flexibility, but swapping is likely a future benefit rather than an immediate one.

Personal Opinion: An Infrastructure Arms Race

The launch of the RT swappable battery version reflects an intensifying "infrastructure arms race" among automakers. BYD is pushing "flash charging," Nio is deep in "battery swapping," and now Aion is joining with CATL. While 99-second swapping is impressive, the true revolution depends on the scale and speed of infrastructure deployment.

For Hong Kong users, the RT is a "future-proof" option. With a fixed charger at home, its 650km range is sufficient. For those reliant on public networks, charging will likely remain the primary method for now. GAC Aion's strong momentum in Hong Kong proves its product is well-received. Whether the swappable version becomes a hit depends entirely on how quickly the CATL swapping network materializes in the city. After all, the fastest swap technology is useless without a station to use it.
