On March 25, the Aion N60 will officially open for blind orders. This compact pure electric SUV features a lithium iron phosphate battery and supports battery swapping technology. For Hong Kong users, the arrival of this vehicle raises a pertinent question: When the lack of charging piles is the biggest obstacle to EV adoption, could battery swapping open a new door for Hong Kong drivers?

Battery Swapping: A "Game Changer" for Hong Kong's Charging Woes?

The core highlight of the Aion N60 is its support for battery swapping. In Hong Kong, where charging piles are scarce and installing home chargers in older buildings is difficult, the value of battery swapping is particularly significant. As demonstrated by Nio's operations in Hong Kong, a swap station can complete a battery change in just 3 minutes, comparable to refueling a gasoline car. For users without home chargers, battery swapping offers "refueling freedom"—no waiting to charge, no searching for a charger, just a few minutes at a swap station for a full battery.

Of course, the success of battery swapping depends on a robust network of swap stations. Currently, the number of swap stations in Hong Kong is limited, mainly concentrated in Kowloon and parts of the New Territories. If Aion can partner with local stakeholders to build out this network, the practicality of the N60 would increase significantly, making it an attractive option for convenience-seeking Hong Kong users.

Amorphous Alloy Electric Drive: One Extra Kilometer per kWh

Another technological highlight of the Aion N60 is its use of an amorphous alloy electric drive. According to the manufacturer, this technology allows the vehicle to travel an extra kilometer per kilowatt-hour. For users, this translates to lower running costs and longer range.

Amorphous alloy is a new material with high magnetic permeability and low loss characteristics. When used in electric motors, it significantly improves energy conversion efficiency and reduces energy loss. For EVs, this means achieving longer range with the same battery capacity or using a smaller, more cost-effective battery for the same range requirement.

While official range figures haven't been released, based on other Aion models, the N60's range is expected to exceed 400km, sufficient for a week of commuting and weekend trips in Hong Kong.

Size and Space: The Practicality of a Compact SUV

The Aion N60 measures 4,615mm in length, 1,860/1,883mm in width, and 1,673mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,775mm. This places it in the compact SUV segment, competing with models like the BYD Yuan Plus and Xpeng G3i. For Hong Kong users, this size is very practical—the length makes parking easier than larger SUVs, while still providing enough interior space for four occupants.

The 2,775mm wheelbase offers ample rear legroom for family trips. The trunk capacity is estimated between 400-500 liters, expanding to over 1,000 liters with the rear seats folded, enough for strollers, camping gear, or large luggage.

Design Language: A Simplified Family Expression

Externally, the Aion N60 adopts a new design language characterized by simplicity. Through-type light bars at both the front and rear, combined with the AION logo, enhance its identity. The flowing body lines, ventilation openings on the lower bumper, and silver skid plates give it a crossover feel. The overall clean yet dynamic design appeals to younger buyers.

Powertrain and Range: Dual Motor Options + LFP Battery

The N60 offers two drive motor options with maximum outputs of 110kW and 165kW, paired with an LFP battery pack. LFP batteries offer advantages in safety and cycle life, important for users focused on long-term ownership.

The N60 supports fast charging; though official times are pending, based on other Aion models, a 30-minute charge from 30% to 80% is expected. Combined with battery swapping, it offers diverse recharging options.

Pricing Strategy: Market Breakthrough for the Aion N60

Official pricing hasn't been announced, but based on Aion's strategy, it's likely in the RMB 150,000-200,000 range. If introduced to Hong Kong, an estimated price of HKD 200,000-250,000 would position it against entry-level electric SUVs like the BYD Atto 3 and Xpeng G3i.

In this competitive segment, the N60's advantages lie in its battery swapping capability and amorphous alloy drive technology, while its challenge is building brand recognition.

Hong Kong Perspective: Three Hurdles for RHD Introduction

RHD Development Cost: Converting a left-hand-drive platform for Hong Kong's smaller RHD market involves significant expense.

Swap Station Network: The value of battery swapping hinges on station density. Partnership with local entities would be crucial for building out the network, a process requiring time and resources.

Charging Compatibility: Even with swapping, standard charging compatibility matters. High-power GB/T chargers are currently limited in Hong Kong, though expansion is planned.

Personal Opinion: Battery Swapping – A Key Piece for Hong Kong's EV Adoption

Looking at the Aion N60's upcoming blind order launch, the key takeaway is that battery swapping could be crucial for Hong Kong's EV adoption. It offers a solution to the persistent problem of charging infrastructure, providing a user experience comparable to refueling gasoline cars. For those without home charging, it represents true "refueling freedom."

Whether this promise is realized depends on building a swap station network. The March 25th blind order launch is a date worth watching. If battery swapping gains traction in Hong Kong, the market landscape could change significantly.
