AITO M6 Pre-sale Launches from RMB 269,800: Up to 760km Range – A New Contender for Hong Kong

On March 23, at Huawei's Spring All-Scenario New Product Launch, the AITO M6 officially began pre-sales. The EREV version starts at RMB 269,800, while the BEV version starts at RMB 289,800. The new model comes standard with the world's highest-spec mass-produced automotive LiDAR – the 896-line dual-optical path image-grade LiDAR. The BEV version achieves a maximum range of 760km, while the EREV version offers up to 272km of pure electric range. Display vehicles are already in showrooms, with official launch scheduled for April.

For Hong Kong users, the arrival of the AITO M6 raises two key questions: When this large SUV, equipped with Huawei's top-tier intelligent driving hardware and impressive range figures, launches with a starting price of RMB 269,800, could it become a new option for Hong Kong residents driving north for leisure or commuting within the mainland? With the "One-for-One" scheme nearing its expiry, how competitive is this vehicle?

896-Line LiDAR: A Leap from "Detection" to "Clarity"

The core highlight of the AITO M6 is the standard-fit 896-line dual-optical path image-grade LiDAR. As the highest-spec mass-produced automotive LiDAR globally, it features a pioneering dual-optical path architecture where wide-angle and telephoto functions work together, achieving a "high-definition picture-in-picture" effect with ultra-HD, ultra-precise, ultra-long-range perception. This enables the system to accurately identify obstacles like curbs, discarded tires, or small animals at night.

For Hong Kong users, while local regulations currently restrict the full functionality of such advanced hardware, having it pre-installed offers future-proofing. Its ability to detect small targets (as low as 14cm) provides greater safety margin on Hong Kong's narrow streets.

Range and Charging: Dual Strategy with 760km BEV and 272km EREV

The AITO M6 offers both BEV and EREV powertrains, catering to diverse range needs. The BEV version, powered by a 97.644kWh battery pack, delivers CLTC ranges of 665km, 705km, 715km, and 760km. A 760km range means a trip from Hong Kong to Changsha without recharging, covering a month's commuting and weekend trips on a single charge.

The EREV version features 36.019kWh and 51.975kWh battery options, offering CLTC pure electric ranges of 180km, 260km, and 272km. A 272km pure electric range means a Hong Kong driver with a 30km daily commute could charge just once a week. Even without home charging, a quick top-up at a shopping mall would suffice for the week. The range extender seamlessly takes over for longer journeys, eliminating range anxiety.

Charging efficiency is also impressive. The vehicle supports an 800V high-voltage platform and ultra-fast charging, replenishing from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes. This matches the refueling experience of a petrol car.

Size and Space: The Practicality of a Large Five-Seater

The AITO M6 measures 4,960mm in length, 1,985mm in width, 1,736mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,950mm. This puts it firmly in the large luxury SUV category, comparable to the BMW X5 or Mercedes GLE. The 2.95m wheelbase and five-seat layout provide ample space for all occupants.

Rear legroom exceeds 1,000mm, with a flat floor enhancing comfort for the middle passenger. Trunk capacity is 1,012L, expanding to 1,940L with the seats folded, accommodating camping gear, strollers, or large luggage. This practicality is crucial for Hong Kong families.

Intelligent Cockpit: HarmonyOS + Xiao Yi AI Agent

Inside, the AITO M6 features the HarmonyOS cockpit with the Xiao Yi AI agent. A 15.6-inch central screen can rotate left or right, complemented by a narrow "Inspiration Showcase" passenger entertainment screen. Ten magnetic attachment points allow personalization, enabling one-touch activation of custom scenarios.

Features include a D-shaped multifunction steering wheel, sport seats, dual wireless chargers, a panoramic sunroof, ambient sound, HUD, and a star-ring diffuser, blending technology and practicality.

Pricing Strategy: Value Proposition at RMB 269,800

The M6's pre-sale price range of RMB 269,800-289,800 is highly competitive. The Li L6 starts at RMB 249,800 but offers only 212km of EV range; the Tesla Model Y starts at RMB 249,900 but requires extra for advanced ADAS. The M6 offers standard 896-line LiDAR, up to 760km range, and the HarmonyOS cockpit, presenting strong value.

For Hong Kong, this price segment is competitive. The BYD Atto 3 starts around HKD 188,000 but trails in range and tech. The Tesla Model 3 starts around HKD 320,000 but offers less space. An RHD M6, competitively priced, could significantly impact the local market.

Hong Kong Perspective: Three Hurdles for RHD Introduction

RHD Development Cost: Converting a left-hand-drive platform for Hong Kong's smaller RHD market involves significant engineering expense, a key commercial consideration.

Brand Recognition: AITO's brand recognition in Hong Kong lags behind BYD or Tesla. However, Huawei's strong brand presence in Hong Kong (phones, wearables) could positively influence perception of the AITO vehicle.

Charging Compatibility: The M6's 800V ultra-fast charging requires compatible high-power chargers. Currently, Hong Kong's high-power GB/T chargers (>100kW) are limited (only 10). While government targets aim for 4,000 fast chargers by 2030, infrastructure is still developing.

Personal Opinion: Huawei's Ecosystem "Disruption"

The AITO M6 showcases Huawei's technological prowess: 896-line LiDAR, HarmonyOS, Xiao Yi AI, 800V platform – integrated into a vehicle starting at RMB 269,800. This represents a potent product package.

For Hong Kong users, the M6 signifies a direction: Huawei's ecosystem expanding from phones to cars, reshaping industry competition. Its ultimate success in Hong Kong hinges on RHD availability and infrastructure development. Regardless, it's a compelling option in the evolving NEV landscape.

The M6 launches in April. For Hong Kong buyers, it's a date worth watching. When "disruption" arrives, market rules may be rewritten.
