BYD Makes History as Hong Kong's 2025 Best-Selling Car Brand, Signaling the Arrival of the Era

A Sea Lion 07 EV glides slowly down Queen's Road Central in Hong Kong, its body reflecting the storefronts of Rolex and LV. This scene perfectly symbolizes the changing times in Hong Kong's car market – amidst these symbols of European and Japanese craftsmanship, Chinese-branded electric vehicles have become a common sight on the streets.

Data for the full year of 2025, released by the Hong Kong Transport Department in March 2026, provides the definitive proof of this shift: BYD, with 9,751 new vehicle registrations, clinched the title of Hong Kong's overall best-selling automotive brand for the first time, a staggering 68% increase compared to 2024, decisively breaking the long-standing dominance of foreign brands in the market. Even more impressively, its all-electric SUV, the Sea Lion 07, sold a remarkable 5,680 units, making it the best-selling individual model of the year. This is not just a victory for one brand, but a milestone moment in the history of the Chinese automotive industry – the first time a Chinese brand has topped the sales charts in Hong Kong, a mature and internationalized market, completely rewriting the monopoly held by foreign brands for decades.

The Significance of a Double Champion

Behind the number 9,751 is a sustained market offensive that lasted all year. In January 2025 alone, BYD signaled its intent by topping the monthly charts with 849 units sold. By the first half of the year, it had sold 4,902 vehicles, surpassing Tesla's 3,889 and capturing a 26.71% market share. This meant that one in every four new cars on Hong Kong's streets wore a BYD badge.

The momentum continued into the second half, solidifying the victory. The Sea Lion 07's 5,680 sales surpassed the annual totals of many other brands entirely. Models like the Yuan Plus and Seal provided consistent volume, forming a complete and robust product portfolio.

The significance of this achievement goes beyond the sales figures themselves. It's a testament to the profound shift in Hong Kong consumers' perception of Chinese cars, moving from "budget-friendly options" to "mainstream choices."

The Success Formula of the Sea Lion 07

With 5,680 units sold, the Sea Lion 07 is the most common EV on Hong Kong streets. Its success is no accident. Priced from approximately HKD 268,000, it offers a 2,930mm wheelbase, a 542km range, and robust performance, giving it a clear advantage over comparable European rivals. Its precise positioning – meeting family needs for space while offering the tech-savvy features younger drivers desire – resonated perfectly with local buyers.

As one owner shared on social media: "I looked at the Model Y and the iX1, but chose the Sea Lion 07. For the same price, you get so much more – ventilated seats, an electric sunshade, a 360-degree camera. These are features we use every day in Hong Kong." This practical, user-centric product thinking is key to the Sea Lion 07's appeal.

Dealer Network and Policy Support

BYD's success in Hong Kong is a symphony of technology, product, distribution, and policy.

On the distribution front, Harmony Auto, BYD's sole dealer in Hong Kong, leveraged its experience with ultra-luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Bentley to create a premium sales and service network. Over ten stores are now strategically located in core business districts like Wan Chai, Kowloon Bay, and Tsim Sha Tsui, ensuring convenient access and a high level of service.

Government policy also played a crucial role. The extension of the electric vehicle first registration tax concession, coupled with the "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" scheme, created a favorable environment for EV adoption. BYD proactively adapted to these policies, offering convenient supporting services for local users, further enhancing the ownership experience.

BYD's Hong Kong Operations Director, Zhang Jingrong, stated, "In the future, we are confident in maintaining our leading position in the Hong Kong market through technological innovation, product excellence, and customer service, providing local consumers with even more diversified green mobility options."

A Deepening Market Shift

BYD's triumph is not an isolated incident. 2025 sales data shows other Chinese brands like Zeekr, XPeng, and Aion collectively surging into the top ranks, with growth rates often exceeding 300%. Concurrently, traditional giants like Toyota and Mercedes saw their sales drop by 35.4% and a dramatic 61.2%, respectively. This is not just one brand's victory; it's a collective breakthrough for the entire Chinese automotive industry.

This reflects a fundamental change in consumer perception. More and more buyers are embracing the idea that "Made in China" equates to "High Quality." As one local owner put it, "Before, I bought a Chinese car because it was cheap. Now, I buy one because it's genuinely good." This cognitive shift is the crucial step for Chinese auto brands going global.

Personal Opinion: The Brand Leap from "Budget" to "Mainstream"

Witnessing BYD's success in Hong Kong, the most striking impression is this brand leap from "budget option" to "mainstream choice."

A decade ago, the idea of a Chinese brand outselling Toyota and Mercedes in Hong Kong would have been dismissed. Today, it's reality. The buyer of a Sea Lion 07 isn't a first-time car buyer on a strict budget; they are a mainstream consumer willing to pay for technology, safety, and experience. This reshaping of brand perception is far more significant than any single sales figure.

Importantly, this victory wasn't achieved through a price war. BYD's prices in Hong Kong are not vastly different from its European rivals. The win was earned through product strength itself – the safety reputation of the Blade Battery, the spaciousness of the Sea Lion 07, the seamless experience of its smart features. When you can build trust in consumers' minds, brand premium follows naturally.

The demonstrative effect of the Hong Kong market for the wider industry shouldn't be underestimated. As one of the most internationalized right-hand-drive markets, success here can be a powerful template for the UK, Australia, Japan, and other RHD markets. As BYD's Zhang Jingrong noted, the focus remains on leveraging technological iteration to solidify the lead.

When a Sea Lion 07 cruises past the Rolex and LV stores on Queen's Road Central, it's no longer just a "Chinese car"; it's simply a "good car." This shift in perception is the critical step for Chinese automotive brands on the global stage. 9,751 units is just the beginning. The "BYD density" on Hong Kong's streets will only get higher.
