2026-10-04 09:50:00

The Fangchengbao Tai 7 is a D-segment five-seater new energy SUV launched by BYD's professional personalised sub-brand, Fangchengbao, serving as the second series-production model in the "Tai" range. The Tai 7 was officially launched on 9 September 2025, followed by the introduction of the pure electric EV Flash Charging Edition on 29 April 2026. The new SUV adopts the "Interstellar Ark" design language, blending rugged off-road cues with practical family versatility via its boxy silhouette. Within Fangchengbao's model hierarchy, the "Bao" series (Bao 5, Bao 8) targets the premium hardcore off-road market in the RM300,000 to RM400,000 bracket, whereas the "Tai" series (Tai 3, Tai 7) caters to the urban family boxy SUV segment spanning RM150,000 to RM250,000. Key rivals to the Tai 7 include segment contenders like the GWM Haval Raptor and Jetour Traveller.

Design Language

The Fangchengbao Tai 7 sports a classic boxy silhouette, characterised by squarish, rugged body lines. Up front, it features "double-eyelid" headlamp clusters that pair dual L-shaped light guides with square headlamp units, while an H-shaped trim piece anchors a bold, structured front fascia. Down the flanks, a three-section profile is defined by clean horizontal and vertical lines; prominent bonnet character lines, flared wheel arches, and black side cladding underscore its rugged persona. The rear end is fitted with a tailgate-mounted external storage boxand rounded rectangular tail lamp clusters, complemented by a full-width LED light bar and flush pop-out door handles. Dimensionally, the SUV measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width, and 1,865 mm in height, with a 2,920 mm wheelbase. Approach and departure angles stand at 24° and 25° respectively. Inside, the cabin adopts the "Interstellar Ark" design theme, balancing geometric edges with curved surfaces. Three interior colourways are available: Snow Hide Grey, Eclipse Blue, and Twilight Orange. The dashboard features a tiered, floating wraparound layout, blending brushed metal accents with soft-touch materials throughout.

Powertrain and Performance

The Tai 7 is available in both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric (BEV) flavours. The PHEV variant utilises BYD's latest DM technology, comprising a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine (115 kW / 225 Nm) paired with electric motors. The 2WD variant delivers a total motor output of 200 kW and 315 Nm, whereas the 4WD variant pushes out 360 kW and 620 Nm. The flagship 4WD Ultra completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.5 seconds. Powering the PHEV is a 35.6 kWh dedicated Blade Battery, delivering CLTC pure-electric ranges of 135 km, 190 km, and 200 km depending on spec. Aided by a 60-litre fuel tank, total combined cruising range exceeds 1,300 km. The pure electric EV Flash Charging Edition runs on BYD's second-generation Blade Batterybuilt on a 1,000V high-voltage architecture, capable of peak charging speeds up to 1,500 kW. It comes in 675 km and 755 km RWD configurations, with the 755 km variant claiming the longest range among pure-electric boxy SUVs on the market; a 10% to 70% state of charge takes merely 5 minutes under ambient temperatures. NEDC fuel consumption in charge-depleting mode is rated at 4.9 L/100 km. The entire line-up supports a 6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power supply.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the Tai 7 is underpinned by a front double-wishbone and rear five-link independent suspension setup. This configuration, typically reserved for luxury performance vehicles, delivers superb lateral stability and vertical bump absorption. Standard across the range are the DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System and DiSus Road Preview, which leverage ADAS cameras to scan for road irregularities ahead and proactively fine-tune damper stiffness. The chassis setup prioritises ride comfort, ironing out road chatter with easewhile effectively reining in body roll and rebound over speed humps and potholed tarmac. The monocoque construction contributes to weight reduction, ensuring planted high-speed stability and ample composure when cornering. Turning radius is a tight 5.67 metres. The SUV offers 12 drive/terrain modes, retaining signature Fangchengbao off-road capabilities such as stationary battery preservation and tank-turn "Bao Turn".

Cabin and Equipment

The interior remains a central selling point of the Tai 7. Standard fitment across the range includes a triple-screen array comprising a 15.6-inch floating central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster, and a 27-inch W-HUD head-up display. The infotainment operates on the DiLink 150 operating system, integrated with DeepSeek AI capabilities. It supports natural multi-modal interaction including four-zone voice command and continuous dialogue. It also marks the debut of BYD's proprietary BYD Pad smart tablet, which controls up to 45 in-car functions. Usable passenger cabin length is rated at 3,310 mm, translating to an interior space efficiency of 70.9%. The seats feature a "Soufflé four-layer structure" paired with cloud-feel headrests, with genuine leather Soufflé upholstery standard across all variants, along with seat heating and ventilation throughout. Front seats feature massage functionality as standard, while the front passenger seat gains an ottoman leg-rest with a one-touch relaxation mode; rear seatbacks feature an 8° electric recline. Around the cabin are 47 practical storage cubbies. Boot capacity stands at 970 litres in standard configuration (expanding past 1,000 litres including the external storage pod)and maxes out at 1,880 litres with the second row folded flat. Other amenities include a 4.5-litre smart cooler/warmer box (-6°C to 50°C), a 20-speaker Devialet premium sound system, an active in-cabin fragrance system, a panoramic glass roof, and multi-colour ambient lighting. The range-topper can also be specified with the optional Lingyuan BYD onboard drone system.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety is a cornerstone of the Tai 7. In 2026, the Tai 7 swept top "Good" (G) ratings across all four C-IASI crash test assessment categories: occupant safety, pedestrian protection, active safety assist, as well as crashworthiness and repair economy. The vehicle is engineered to meet 2024 C-NCAP five-star crash test standards. It incorporates a "seven-horizontal, nine-vertical" ultra-high-strength body structurealong with CTB (Cell-to-Body) battery integration technology. Nine airbags come standard across the entire range. Also standard is the Tyre-blowout Stability Control (TSC) system, engineered to keep the vehicle stable and bring it to a controlled stop at speeds up to 140 km/h during a sudden blowout. On the active safety front, BYD's God's Eye ADAS suite is standard fitment. Mid-to-low spec variants utilise the God's Eye C-ADAS Tri-focal Camera suite with 29 sensors, supporting High-Speed Navigation Pilot and automated parking; the top-tier 4WD Ultra steps up to the God's Eye B-ADAS LiDAR Edition (DiPilot 300), featuring a roof-mounted LiDAR unit and an NVIDIA Orin-X processing chip tied to 30 sensors, enabling City Navigation Pilot. The vehicle's ADAS capabilities continue to improve via over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

Market Reception and Verdict

The Fangchengbao Tai 7 quickly turned into a runaway sales success upon launch. It racked up 8,128 deliveries within just 21 days on sale; as of May 2026, cumulative sales have approached the 150,000-unit milestone, with peak monthly deliveries surpassing 30,000 units. Monthly deliveries stood at 17,000 units in April 2026, climbing further to 18,000 units in May to retain the sales crown in both the hybrid SUV and boxy SUV segments for six consecutive months. Within the brand, the Tai 7 contributes to more than 60% of overall sales volume. On 20 May 2026, Fangchengbao celebrated 400,000 cumulative brand sales, with the Tai 7 alone accounting for 150,000 units. Overseas demand has also been robust, with export orders already reaching 15,000 units. Notably, 85% of buyers opted for the top-of-the-line 4WD Ultra variant, priced at RM219,800.

The Tai 7's core strengths stem from: generous five-seater cabin space enabled by its near-5-metre body length and 2,920 mm wheelbase, standard double-wishbone/five-link suspension paired with the DiSus-C smart chassis across all trims, an impressive balance of 4.5-second century-sprint performance and over 1,300 km of combined cruising range, a tech-forward user experience delivered by the DiLink 150 cockpit and God's Eye ADAS, along with stellar all-Good C-IASI safety ratings. Priced RM60,000 to RM100,000 below comparable segment rivals, the Tai 7 presents an exceptionally compelling value proposition in the RM150,000 to RM250,000 boxy SUV market.
