EXEED LX (Petrol)

2026-09-21 22:50:00

EXEED LX is the second mass-production model rolled out in 2019 by EXEED, the premium sub-brand under Chery Automobile, positioned as a compact SUV. Championing EXEED's brand philosophy of "entry-level yet premium", the LX shouldered the crucial responsibility of driving market penetration and broadening the brand's customer base. The model broke cover on 22 August 2019, commenced pre-bookings at the Chengdu Motor Show on 5 September, and was officially launched on 8 October. The debut of the LX marked the completion of EXEED's initial SUV portfolio spanning compact to mid-to-large segments, serving as a cornerstone model in executing the brand's youthful and tech-centric strategy.

Model Overview

Positioned as a compact family SUV, the EXEED LX is built around the product philosophy of being "intelligent, premium, and class-transcending", targeted at younger buyers who prioritise high-tech connectivity and design flair. This put it in direct rivalry with fellow Chinese premium offerings such as the Lynk & Co 01 and WEY VV5. At its initial launch in 2019, a total of 4 variants were introduced (Xingxiang Edition, Xingyao Edition, Xingrui Edition, and Xingzun Edition), with official recommended retail prices ranging from RM125,900 to RM150,900. Across the range, the powertrain featured a 1.6T turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration.

In terms of nomenclature, the "LX" badge follows a straightforward naming logic: "L" designates compact dimensions, while "X" denotes an SUV body style. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,533 mm in length, 1,848 mm in width, and 1,699 mm in height, riding on a 2,670 mm wheelbase. Combined with its wide 1,848 mm stance, it offers generous lateral and legroom for rear-seat occupants. Subsequently, EXEED introduced a 1.5T variant alongside special editions such as the Versailles Edition, further enriching the model line-up.

Design Language

The EXEED LX adopts the brand's signature "Intellect-Sensation Aesthetics" design philosophy, sporting an avant-garde, tech-inspired appearance that sets it apart distinctly from the brand's pioneer models, the TX and TXL. The front fascia shuns the oversized grilles in vogue at the time, opting instead for a full-width horizontal layout. Complemented by standard matrix LED headlamps and full-width LED daytime running lights (DRLs), it creates an imposing horizontal visual stance. The lower air intake is finished in grey accents with geometric trim elements, giving the front end a layered yet well-balanced profile. Round the back, full-width LED taillights mirror the front design, while functional dual exhaust outlets enhance its sporty stance without resorting to tacky faux exhaust trims.

The cabin represents one of the primary highlights of the EXEED LX. Dominating the dashboard is a dual 12.3-inch floating widescreen setup seamlessly integrated under a single anti-glare panel, exuding a clean, cohesive visual feel. Below the centre console sits an 8-inch touchscreen climate control panel, paired with an electronic gear selector, piano-key toggle switches, and 7-colour rhythmic ambient lighting to deliver a cockpit rich in high-tech ambiance. Generous applications of wood-grain trim inserts and contrast-stitched leather upholstery elevate the perceived interior quality, delivering a class-transcending luxury experience in the RM120,000 to RM150,000 price bracket.

Powertrain and Performance

At launch, the EXEED LX was powered by Chery's third-generation ACTECO 1.6TGDI turbocharged four-cylinder direct-injection petrol engine (engine code: SQRF4J16), delivering a maximum output of 145 kW (approx. 197 hp) and a peak torque of 290 Nm, sustained across a broad rev band from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm. The engine achieves a thermal efficiency of 37.1% and complies with China VI emission standards. Transmission duties are handled by a Getrag 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (7DCT), whose wet-clutch design ensures optimal cooling and reliability in stop-and-go urban traffic. Official performance metrics include a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.8 seconds, a top speed of 200 km/h, and an NEDC combined fuel consumption of 6.9 L/100 km. The recommended fuel is RON 92 petrol.

In 2020, EXEED expanded the range with a 1.5T variant powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engine outputting 115 kW (approx. 156 hp) and 230 Nm of torque, mated to a CVT with 9 virtual ratios. Aimed at daily commuting and fuel efficiency, this variant served to lower the entry threshold.

Chassis and Handling

Built on EXEED's M3X Mars Architecture, the chassis features an all-independent setup comprising front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension. While common among compact SUVs, the multi-link rear suspension offers superior wheel articulation control and road compliance over a torsion beam. The chassis tuning was co-developed with Germany's Benteler, delivering a distinctly comfort-biased ride. The initial damper stroke is supple, effectively absorbing road imperfections and minor undulations to ensure a plush ride; the secondary stroke retains sufficient firmness to keep body roll in check during rapid transitions and spirited cornering. Steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system with speed-sensing assistance. Stopping power comes from ventilated front discs and solid rear disc brakes, configured strictly in front-wheel drive.

Cabin and Features

The EXEED LX adopts a 5-door, 5-seater layout. Benefiting from the 2,670 mm wheelbase and a low centre floor hump, three adults can sit in the rear with decent middle-passenger foot room. The seats are trimmed in leather, with the front seats featuring power adjustment and heating functions. Boot capacity stands at 351 litres in standard guise, expandable via 60:40 split-folding rear seats.

The smart cockpit is a standout selling point for the EXEED LX. The infotainment runs on the Lion 3.0 Smart Cloud System co-developed with Baidu Apollo, seamlessly integrated into the twin 12.3-inch widescreen displays. Key system highlights include:

  • AR Augmented Reality Navigation: Uses the front camera to detect lanes and project navigational route overlays onto live camera feeds, providing precise guidance at complex junctions;

  • Deep Facial Recognition & In-car Payment: Completes Face ID verification in one second to restore personalised driver profiles (seat position, audio presets, climate control settings), while supporting direct in-car payment for tickets and parking fees;

  • Intelligent Voice Control: Features directional voice-zone recognition to identify whether commands come from the driver or front passenger, executing operations specifically for that zone (such as lowering only the front passenger window or adjusting respective climate vents), with support for voice barge-in and continuous dialogue without wake words;

  • FAPA Fully Automated Parking Assist: Supports hands-free automated parking and exit manoeuvres for perpendicular, parallel, and diagonal parking bays.

The infotainment system also supports Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity, 4G telematics, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, QQ Music, and remote vehicle telematics via a mobile app (remote engine start, climate control pre-cooling, door locking, etc.). For device charging, the lower front centre console houses two USB ports and a 12V power socket, complemented by an additional two USB ports in the rear.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of active and passive safety, the EXEED LX comes well-equipped with standard electronic safety aids, including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and Auto Brake Hold. Passive safety comprises dual front airbags, front side airbags, and front/rear curtain airbags. The bodyshell adopts a high-strength safety cage design, reinforced with hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel in critical areas.

On the advanced driver assistance front, the EXEED LX is equipped with a Level 2.5 Autonomous Driving System, supported by an array of millimetre-wave radars, high-definition cameras, and ultrasonic sensors. Its suite covers 17 ADAS driver assistance functions:

  • Full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) (0–150 km/h, with Stop & Go);

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA);

  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) (with pedestrian and vehicle detection);

  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA);

  • 360° HD 3D Panoramic Surround View System (high-resolution display with minimal distortion).

In terms of ADAS hardware and software capabilities, the EXEED LX was among the class leaders within its price segment.

Market Performance and Reception

The EXEED LX represented an essential strategic entry for the EXEED brand in the competitive compact SUV market, though its overall sales trajectory showed an initial surge followed by a gradual slowdown. During its early post-launch period, the LX drew considerable consumer interest owing to its rich tech suite and high value proposition. In May 2021, sales of the EXEED LX surged by 72.6% year-on-year and 34% month-on-month, showing solid internal sales momentum. However, sales subsequently tapered off. Between 2024 and 2025, few models across the EXEED stable sustained monthly deliveries above 1,000 units, and the LX's market visibility faded considerably. Market analysts point out that the primary cause of EXEED's subdued sales lay in its relatively late market entry—arriving well after established rivals like Lynk & Co and WEY had secured their foothold, thereby squeezing its growth potential; concurrently, fluctuations in Chery's overarching brand perception also spilled over to EXEED's market acceptance.

From an ownership and media review standpoint, the interior styling of the EXEED LX—notably the twin 12.3-inch widescreen displays—garnered widespread praise for delivering an RM300,000-class luxury feel within an RM150,000 package. Advanced features like AR navigation, facial recognition, and Level 2.5 ADAS were also lauded as segment benchmarks. On the flip side, some owners and road testers noted that the chassis lacked the pliant, planted feel of top-tier rivals, displaying slightly harsh damping over road humps; the 1.6T+7DCT powertrain exhibited occasional low-speed hesitation in heavy traffic; and an underdeveloped dealer and service network compromised after-sales convenience.

On the whole, as the entry-level SUV of the EXEED marque, the EXEED LX demonstrated strong product sincerity and technical capability through its intelligent cockpit, class-transcending interior luxury, and Level 2.5 ADAS suite. However, hampered by limited brand awareness, intense segment rivalry, and an underdeveloped after-sales footprint, the model struggled to achieve a major volume breakthrough. Nonetheless, as EXEED continues to refine its product portfolio and accelerate its electrification strategy (such as the EXEED Yaoguang C-DM), the technological know-how and product definition experience accumulated through the LX have laid an essential practical foundation for the brand's subsequent model iterations.
