Model Overview

The Changan UNI-K is the second model in Changan Auto's premium UNI product series, positioned as a D-segment SUV. Officially launched on 28 March 2021, it debuted with a 2.0T + 8AT powertrain across four variants, priced between RM153,900 and RM184,900. In October 2021, the lineup expanded with the Luxury Edition and All-Wheel Drive Premium Edition, alongside the debut of the bespoke UNI Customisation Service. In February 2023, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) UNI-K Smart Electric iDD was introduced, tagged from RM187,900 to RM215,900, boasting a pure electric range of 135 km and a combined range exceeding 1,000 km. As the flagship of the UNI family, the UNI-K spearheaded Changan's move upmarket, initially garnering immense market buzz with its futuristic styling; however, sales momentum subsequently plummeted, registering just 319 units throughout the entire year of 2025.
Design Language
On the styling front, the UNI-K carries forward the UNI series' signature "borderless" family aesthetic. The front fascia features a parametric hexagonal matrix grille that seamlessly blends into the front bumper, blurring panel lines to project a distinct sci-fi look. The lighting setup, dubbed "Starship Headlamps", utilises ultra-slim bi-LED projector lenses flanked by trident-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs), while the lower bumper sensors take inspiration from aerospace autocannons to appeal to a younger demographic. Dimensionally, the SUV measures 4,865 mm long, 1,948 mm wide, and 1,690 mm tall (1,700 mm for AWD variants), with a generous 2,890 mm wheelbase that gives it a clear footprint advantage over rival mid-size SUVs. The side profile adopts a fastback silhouette with flush pop-out door handles, leading to full-width LED taillights and quad exhaust tailpipes at the rear. Inside, the starship-themed cockpit employs a 3+1 quad-screen layout, comprising a triple LCD meter cluster (3.5-inch, 10.25-inch, and 9.2-inch) and a floating 12.3-inch infotainment display positioned higher up for effortless eye-level viewing. Material-wise, the dashboard, door cards, and centre console armrest are generously wrapped in leatherette with contrast stitching, delivering a refined cabin ambience that stands out in its class.
Powertrain and Performance
The petrol-powered UNI-K is powered across the range by Changan's next-generation Blue Core 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine (JL486ZQ5), delivering 171 kW (233 PS) and 390 Nm of peak torque from 1,900 to 3,300 rpm, paired with an Aisin 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. Benefiting from a 350-bar direct injection system, triple fuel injection, and a low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger, power delivery is generally smooth and progressive; however, the low-end throttle mapping is overly sensitive, resulting in a somewhat snatchy initial step-off that takes getting used to. An on-demand BorgWarner AWD system is available on higher trims. Under the WLTC cycle, combined fuel consumption is rated at 8.3 L/100 km on RON 92 petrol. The plug-in hybrid UNI-K Smart Electric iDD pairs a Blue Core NE 1.5T dedicated hybrid engine with a 6-speed electric drive gearbox, delivering 135 km of EV range and over 1,000 km in combined range; nevertheless, consumer feedback regarding transmission jerkiness and abnormal mechanical noises has weighed on its market reputation.
Chassis and Handling
The underpinnings consist of a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The dampers are equipped with multi-stage damping and an RS full-displacement valve system to precisely regulate compression and rebound damping forces, effectively soaking up road imperfections over rough surfaces. The overall chassis setup is tuned for ride comfort, delivering a pliant ride on paved urban roads, though it tends to run out of composure over larger potholes and harsher ruts. Under spirited driving or high-speed cornering, noticeable body roll and vague steering feedback become apparent, highlighting dynamic limits compared to more driver-focused contenders. Steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system with selectable drive modes, while braking duties are managed by ventilated front discs and solid rear discs, backed by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB).
Cabin and Features
The digital cockpit runs on the iFLYTEK Feiyu 3.0 voice recognition system, with the 12.3-inch infotainment head unit operating on the in Call telematics suite supporting 4G connectivity, FOTA updates, and Huawei HiCar smartphone mirroring. High-spec variants gain AR navigation, gesture controls, and facial recognition. A premium SONY sound system with up to 14 speakers is standard on higher grades, featuring integrated driver headrest speakers for private navigation prompts without disrupting multimedia audio. The seats are trimmed in Nappa-textured leather, featuring 12-way power adjustability and massage functions for the driver, 8-way power adjustment for the front passenger, and heating plus ventilation for both front seats. At the rear, a flat floor and two-stage reclining seatbacks provide generous legroom and passenger comfort. Additional creature comforts include a 67-inch panoramic sunroof, a digital streaming rear-view mirror, 64-colour ambient lighting, and an AQS automatic climate control air purification system.
Safety and Intelligent Driving
In safety evaluations, the UNI-K scored impressively in the China Insurance Automotive Safety Index (C-IASI) crash tests, earning top "Good" (G) ratings across all four occupant protection categories (including the 25% small overlap frontal crash, side impact, roof crush strength, and head restraint tests), alongside a "Good" rating for pedestrian protection. On the active safety front, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) come standard across the range, integrating full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Centring Assist (LCA), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). Independent testing showed that the AEB system could reliably bring the SUV to a complete halt from 65 km/h in stationary dummy vehicle scenarios with sharp braking intervention. A 540° surround-view camera system with a transparent chassis function is standard-fit, while top-spec models gain APA 6.0 remote automated parking. Passive safety is bolstered by six airbags (front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags), providing comprehensive occupant protection.
Market Performance and Evaluation
The commercial trajectory of the UNI-K represents a classic case of a "hot start, cold finish". While monthly deliveries surpassed 3,000 units in its debut month, sales figures tumbled swiftly thereafter. Full-year sales in 2025 stood at an abysmal 319 units, with December logging just 4 units; February 2026 sales dipped to a mere 7 units, languishing in single digits. Concurrently, the UNI-K frequently surfaced on consumer complaint charts on automotive portal 12365auto, recording 335 complaints between June and August 2025 alone—dominated by infotainment software update issues (over 60%), transmission hesitation, infotainment system glitches, and power window failures. Many owners voiced frustration over the prolonged absence of OTA updates, noting that outdated onboard maps caused route calculation errors or system blackouts on the go, leaving manufacturer update promises unfulfilled. From a product perspective, the UNI-K's radical styling, expansive rear cabin space courtesy of its 2,890 mm wheelbase, and Blue Core 2.0T + 8AT powertrain initially earned it strong market acclaim. However, unfulfilled after-sales commitments, unresolved software gremlins, and Changan's strategic pivot toward dedicated new energy marques like Deepal and Qiyuan ultimately relegated the UNI-K from a trailblazing flagship to a market outlier—serving as a classic example of a traditional carmaker phasing out a premium ICE offering amidst its broader electrification transition.
