Brilliance Xinri i03

2026-09-29 14:30:00

The Brilliance Xinri i03 is a fully electric micro-car launched by Brilliance Xinri New Energy Automotive Co., Ltd. (a joint venture between Brilliance Auto Group and Wuxi Xinri E-Vehicle Co., Ltd.), which officially hit the market in November 2022. Positioned as an A00-segment urban runabout for short-distance commutes, it touts its rounded, cute styling, 3-door 4-seat layout, and accessible pricing as key selling points, primarily targeting urban office workers, female drivers, and households in the market for a second car. The 2023 i03 is offered in multiple variants differentiated by range and equipment levels, with official retail prices ranging from RM49,900 to RM51,900.

Design Language

On the exterior, the Brilliance Xinri i03 adopts a "stylish, charming, full, and agile" design philosophy, sporting an overall rounded and cute aesthetic. Up front, it features a closed-off grille characteristic of pure electric vehicles; the fascia is clean and minimalist, flanked by simple halogen headlamp clusters with manual levelling and follow-me-home delay-off functions. Along the sides, clean character lines define the 3-door, 4-seat hatchback silhouette, while high-profile tyres on chunky wheels lend a youthful vibe. The rear styling echoes the front fascia with slightly bolder tail light graphics, delivering respectable road presence.

In terms of dimensions, the i03 measures 3,288 mm long, 1,670 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall (1,564 mm for higher-spec trims), with a 2,185 mm wheelbase and a laden ground clearance of 120 mm. Kerb weight ranges from 865 kg (170 km version) to 1,070 kg (318 km version) depending on the spec. Exterior colour options include white, pink, red, blue, and cyan.

Inside, the i03 goes for a minimalist and practical cabin layout. The dashboard features a clean design, while the steering wheel comes in moulded plastic with a basic tactile feel. Higher-spec variants gain a 7-inch colour LCD instrument cluster and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display supporting OEM smartphone screen mirroring/connectivity. Gear selection is handled via a user-friendly electronic rotary dial. For seating, the entry-level grade gets fabric upholstery while higher trims offer optional faux leather, with the rear bench able to fold down flat in one piece to free up extra boot space.

Powertrain & Performance

The Brilliance Xinri i03 offers two powertrain and range options:

  • Standard Version (170km Fresh Fruit Edition / Early Adopter Edition): Powered by a front-mounted single permanent magnet synchronous electric motor (model TZ180XS-PM22H201) delivering 25 kW (approx. 34 PS) and 95 Nm of torque. Mated to a single-speed EV reduction gearbox in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup, it reaches a top speed of 100 km/h. Energy is supplied by a 14.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack sourced from Farasis Energy, providing a CLTC-rated electric driving range of 170 km. An AC slow charge takes 8 hours, and DC fast charging is not supported across the range.

  • Long Range Version (318km Version): Equipped with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 45 kW (approx. 61 PS) and 150 Nm of torque, completing the 0–50 km/h sprint in 4.4 seconds. Power comes from a 31.45 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, returning an electric range of 318 km.

Power consumption is rated at around 10 kWh per 100 km, keeping running costs exceptionally low. The vehicle comes with a 3-year/120,000 km manufacturer warranty, while the traction battery pack is covered by an 8-year/120,000 km warranty.

Chassis & Handling

Under the skin, the Brilliance Xinri i03 features a front-wheel-drive monocoque chassis, riding on front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension setup. Steering duties are handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system with speed-sensing assist, providing light and effortless manoeuvrability ideal for tight urban driving. Braking is handled by front solid discs and rear drums, paired with a conventional mechanical handbrake. It rides on 165/65 R14 (170 km version) or 165/65 R15 (318 km version) tyres on steel wheels, with no spare tyre provided. Drive modes include Sport and Eco, while regenerative braking and Hill-start Assist come as standard.

Cabin & Features

Cabin appointments vary across the range. The 170 km standard trim comes standard with a 7-inch colour LCD instrument cluster, whereas the 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit is optional (standard on select trims), supporting OEM smartphone screen mirroring. Long-range variants get the central touchscreen as standard. Transmission control is via a fuss-free rotary shift dial.

On the comfort and convenience front, standard kit includes manual air conditioning, front power windows, remote central locking, and remote keyless entry. Upholstery is fabric on the 170 km variant (with optional faux leather) and faux leather as standard on the long-range variant. The front seats feature manual slide and recline adjustments, while the rear bench folds down in one piece to expand boot cargo capacity for daily errands. High-spec models can be optioned with a 4-speaker sound system. A mobile companion app is also available as an option, enabling remote door lock/unlock, AC pre-conditioning, and vehicle status checks/diagnostics.

Safety & Intelligent Driving

On the safety front, the Brilliance Xinri i03 comes standard with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), and a driver-side airbag across the lineup. A front passenger airbag is offered as a paid option (RM2,000), while tyre pressure monitoring (with direct TPMS display) and ISOFIX child seat anchor points are standard fitment.

It is worth noting that some specification listings show conflicting information—reports from Bitauto claim the car is fitted with electronic aids including Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Traction Control System (TCS), and Electronic Stability Program (ESP), whereas spec sheets on PCauto, Youcheyihou, and Cheshi explicitly state these systems are absent. Given the car's budget positioning, actual production models almost certainly lack advanced active safety systems like TCS and ESP.

In terms of driver assistance, rear parking sensors and a reverse camera come standard across the range, though features like cruise control and Auto Brake Hold are absent. The driver assistance tech sits at basic Level 0 with no active safety intervention capabilities.

Market Performance & Review

Representing a key micro-EV foray by the joint venture between Brilliance and Xinri, the Brilliance Xinri i03 has targeted the urban short-distance commuting segment since hitting the market in late 2022. It competes directly against the likes of the Wuling Hongguang MINIEV, Chery QQ Ice Cream, and Changan Lumin, though it suffers from lower brand equity and a muted market presence.

From a product standpoint, the i03's main strengths lie in its powertrain and range: the 170 km version packs a 25 kW motor (punchier than the Wuling Hongguang MINIEV's 20 kW unit), offering slightly livelier performance, while the 318 km long-range variant delivers impressive range figures for its price point. However, the complete absence of DC fast charging across all variants remains its most glaring drawback in terms of charging convenience.

In terms of reliability and ownership feedback, public complaint data is scarce due to the vehicle's small on-the-road population. Looking at the spec sheet, the optional front passenger airbag and the lack of vital active safety aids like TCS and ESP leave it at a clear disadvantage against class rivals.

In summary, the Brilliance Xinri i03 is an entry-level pure electric micro-car built primarily for daily runabout duties, banking on its cute aesthetics, an impressive 318 km long-range variant (on specific specs), and pocket-friendly running costs. For budget-conscious buyers seeking a short-distance commuter with access to convenient AC home charging, the i03 serves as a viable option. That said, compared to class benchmarks like the Wuling Hongguang MINIEV and Changan Lumin, noticeable gaps remain in brand recall, fast-charging support, safety kit, and aftersales network support. With production officially ceasing in 2024, prospective second-hand buyers should also carefully consider the long-term availability of spare parts and aftersales support.
