Wuling Hongguang MINIEV

2026-09-29 21:10:00

The Hongguang MINIEV is an all-electric microcar under SAIC-GM-Wuling, first launched in July 2020. With an accessible price point, compact and agile dimensions, and ultra-low running costs as its core USPs, it rapidly became a phenomenal "people's car" upon its debut, consistently dominating the upper ranks of China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales charts.

Vehicle Overview

Positioned as an A00-segment all-electric microcar (offered in 3-door 4-seater and 5-door 4-seater configurations), the model comes under the SAIC-GM-Wuling stable. Key highlights include unbeatable value for money, an ultra-tight 4.5-metre turning radius, running costs as low as 5 cents per 100 km, and an extensive array of personalised variants. The sixth-generation (2026 model) debuted in March 2026, offering two CLTC-rated range options of 205 km and 301 km across four variants, with official retail prices ranging from RM44,800 to RM54,800, or RM42,800 to RM51,800 with trade-in subsidies.

For comparison, the Classic Edition (2022–2024 models) started from around RM32,800; the Macaron Edition retailed between RM46,800 and RM51,800; the GAMEBOY Edition was priced at roughly RM57,800 to RM69,800; while the Convertible Edition commanded around RM59,800.

As of March 2026, cumulative sales of the Hongguang MINIEV family surpassed 1.9 million units, defending its title as the segment's top seller for 67 consecutive months. It also ranks number one in its category across four key metrics: cumulative sales, customer satisfaction, resale value, and build quality.

Design Language

The sixth-generation Hongguang MINIEV adopts a fresh "Sweet Cube" styling philosophy, marrying its classic boxy silhouette with softened contours to deliver a "smiling" front fascia complete with "sunflower dimples" and whimsical halo-ring LED headlamps. On the outside, three iridescent pearlescent retro body colours are on offer: Light Green, Fluffy White, and Cute Grey, treated with an eight-layer paint process for an upgraded finish.

Dimension-wise, the four-door variant measures 3,268 mm long, 1,520 mm wide, and 1,575 mm tall, with a 2,190 mm wheelbase; the two-door variant comes in at 3,043 × 1,520 × 1,590 mm with a 1,965 mm wheelbase. With a turning radius of just 4.5 metres, it weaves through tight city traffic with exceptional agility.

Inside, the cabin features a "Caramel Cream" dual-tone theme and a floating "Dynamic Island" integrated lower console. The front passenger dashboard boasts a versatile DIY display shelf, allowing owners to showcase figurines and collectibles to create personalised mini-dioramas. A column-mounted electronic gear selector is standard across the range, while higher-spec trims gain a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with a playful UI, supporting OTA updates and smartphone mirroring such as Apple CarPlay.

Powertrain and Performance

Powering the sixth-generation Hongguang MINIEV is a 30 kW 3-in-1 electric drive unit, delivering a 0-50 km/h sprint in 4.56 seconds and a top speed of 100 km/h—providing brisk and responsive off-the-line acceleration ideal for city driving.

On the battery front, the 205 km variant packs a 16.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack, while the 301 km variant is fitted with a 25.1 kWh LFP battery (Wuling's in-house developed Shenlian Battery). Energy consumption is rated as low as 8.9 kWh/100 km, translating to an ultra-frugal running cost of around 5 cents per kilometre.

DC fast charging is standard across the entire range, juicing up from 30% to 80% state of charge in as little as 35 minutes. It also accommodates AC normal charging and a standard 3-pin domestic portable charger, providing three flexible charging solutions for any scenario.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the chassis employs a front-motor, front-wheel-drive layout, featuring MacPherson strut front suspension and a 3-link non-independent rear suspension setup (on selected trims). A tight minimum turning radius of 4.5 metres makes narrow U-turns and congested parking bays effortless, making it tailor-made for daily urban commutes.

It rides on tyre sizes of either 145/70 R12 or 155/65 R13 mounted on 13-inch steel wheels. An electronic parking brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold comes standard across the board.

Cabin and Features

The sixth-generation iteration introduces a segment-first four-door, four-seater layout, completely eliminating the perennial hassle of getting in and out of the rear seats. Tandem seat spacing is generous at 793 mm, and rear passengers enjoy power windows. Up front, the seatbacks can recline up to 164°, allowing occupants to recline flat for a quick rest.

Practicality is enhanced with 20 storage cubbies dotted around the cabin. Boot capacity starts at a modest 170 litres, expanding up to 838 litres with the rear seats folded, easily accommodating grocery runs and weekend road trips.

On the tech front, the range-topping Zhenxiang Edition gets a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, mobile app remote control (for climate control, door locks, etc.), keyless entry with push-start, and three primary smartphone screen mirroring protocols via an upcoming OTA update.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

Structural rigidity has been bolstered thanks to a ring-shaped cage body structure incorporating 60% high-strength steel, with 1,500 MPa ultra-high-strength steel deployed in key crash zones. Dual front airbags for the driver and passenger are standard across all variants. Active safety kit includes an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) suite with 12 integrated functions, a high-definition reverse camera, and an electronic parking brake with auto brake hold.

The battery pack utilises Wuling's proprietary Shenlian Battery technology, built to PPB-grade manufacturing precision and monitored via multi-tier cloud safety analytics, having recorded zero collision-induced thermal runaways across 3 million units sold to date. The vehicle has also earned a full five-star C-NCAP safety rating.

Regarding advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features are omitted in favour of essential safety equipment and practical driving aids.

Market Performance and Evaluation

The Hongguang MINIEV stands as one of the most transformative success stories in the history of China's automotive industry. In 2025, full-year sales reached an astonishing 435,598 units—up 74% year-on-year—peaking at over 60,000 units in October alone. Following the arrival of the sixth-generation iteration, initial market reception has been overwhelmingly positive. The four-door configuration effectively cures the entry-and-exit headaches of its two-door predecessor, whilst standard dual airbags and DC fast charging elevate its overall value proposition.

Core Advantages:

  • Unbeatable value for money with an exceptionally low barrier to entry

  • Segment-exclusive four-door, four-seater layout for effortless rear cabin access

  • Dual airbags, ESC, and fast charging as standard across the range, leaving no gaps in safety or charging convenience

  • Backed by 1.9 million satisfied owners and a 67-month tenure as the segment's sales champion

  • Massive 78% customisation rate among owners, supported by a thriving aftermarket styling culture

Shortcomings:

  • A 301 km range is no longer class-leading by 2026 standards (rivals typically offer 200–300 km)

  • Modest power output, with noticeable range depletion at sustained highway speeds

  • Limited luggage space when carrying a full complement of rear passengers

Key Competitors: Changan Lumin, Geely Panda mini, Chery QQ Ice Cream, Bestune Pony, etc.

Verdict: The Hongguang MINIEV remains the undisputed poster child for affordable daily EV mobility. Armed with a four-door shell, standard dual airbags, DC fast charging, and the backing of 1.9 million owners, the sixth-gen model comfortably holds onto its sales crown in the RM40,000–RM50,000 electric commuter class. Whether as an urban runabout, school transporter, or a second household car, it hits the sweet spot. The pick of the bunch is the range-topping 301km Zhenxiang Edition for its complete kit list, or the 205km Zhenxiang Edition for optimal value.
