XPENG GX shipments to Middle East and Africa begin as orders exceed 3,000

XPENG announced on 17 October that it had begun large-scale shipments of its flagship SUV, the XPENG GX, to the Middle East and Africa.

Although overseas prices have yet to be announced, the company has already received more than 3,000 orders from the Middle East.

The XPENG GX went on sale in China on 20 May this year, priced from RMB 279,800 to RMB 359,800 (approximately HK$300,000 to HK$386,000).

The latest batch of vehicles is being shipped from Lianyungang Port in China to several markets across the Middle East and Africa. XPENG began exporting the GX in August, with the latest shipments marking a further increase in overseas deliveries.

The Middle East has long been an important market for large luxury SUVs, with established models such as the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover.

For XPENG, securing more than 3,000 orders before announcing overseas prices suggests there is already interest in the GX. Several factors could help explain its appeal:

• Electric vehicle technology: Range and air-conditioning performance are particularly important for EVs operating in the Middle East's hot climate. The GX's 800V electrical architecture and thermal management system could offer advantages, although their real-world performance will depend on local conditions.
• Smart technology: XPENG's XNGP driver assistance system and intelligent cockpit could help distinguish the GX from more established luxury SUVs, particularly among buyers interested in advanced in-car technology.
• Potential price advantage: Overseas pricing has not been confirmed, but based on its Chinese-market price, the GX could be positioned below comparable European and American luxury SUVs. A price difference of 30% to 40% has been suggested, although this remains speculative.

XPENG already sells the G6 and X9 in Hong Kong, recording 86 and 31 sales respectively in September. The GX, however, has yet to join the local line-up.

If the GX were introduced in Hong Kong, its price could potentially fall between HK$500,000 and HK$700,000, although this is only an estimate and no official plans or prices have been announced.

Its spacious cabin and advanced technology could appeal to buyers looking for a large electric SUV. However, the GX's size could also be a drawback in Hong Kong, where parking space is often limited and running costs remain an important consideration.

XPENG's decision to expand into the Middle East puts the GX in a market traditionally dominated by established luxury brands, rather than concentrating first on markets such as Southeast Asia.

The early order figures suggest there is demand for the model, although its longer-term success will depend on pricing, deliveries and customer response.

For now, XPENG's Hong Kong line-up remains focused on models such as the G6. A GX launch in the near future appears less likely, but a successful rollout in the Middle East could encourage XPENG to consider more overseas markets for its flagship SUV, potentially including right-hand-drive markets such as Hong Kong.
