Nearly HK$68k difference! Tesla Model Y offers longer range, BYD Sealion 7 comes with lower entry price — which should you choose?

[BitAuto Head-to-Head]In Hong Kong's mid-size pure electric SUV segment, the Model Y and Sealion 7 represent two totally different propositions. One is the world's best-selling car, while the other was Hong Kong's top-selling EV last year. There is a massive HK$68,000 price gap between their entry-level trims, yet at the top-tier end, their pricing is neck and neck——so does the cheaper tag really mean better value?

Pricing: Entry level is over HK$60,000 cheaper, top-spec models break even

The Model Y RWD is priced at HK$413,407 with First Registration Tax included, whereas the entry-spec Sealion 7 starts from HK$345,480——a substantial HK$68,000 difference. That saving alone is easily enough to buy an entry-level commuter motorcycle.

What gets interesting is when you step up to the range-topping models: the Model Y Long Range AWD sits at HK$480,367, while the Sealion 7 AWD costs HK$475,680. That is a marginal difference of just HK$4,687, effectively placing them in the exact same price bracket. In other words, if you are shopping for a flagship dual-motor AWD trim, price won't be the dealmaker; but if you are just after the entry-level variant, the Sealion 7 is roughly 16% cheaper.

Range and Charging: Supercharger network vs ultra-fast charging speed

On paper, their driving ranges are practically neck and neck: the Model Y RWD delivers a WLTP-rated 488km, while the Sealion 7 RWD offers around 482km, which makes negligible difference for everyday urban commutes in Hong Kong.

The real differentiator lies in the charging experience. The Sealion 7 is built on an 800V high-voltage architecture with a peak DC charging power of up to 230kW, taking roughly 24 minutes to juice from 10% to 80%. The Model Y RWD caps out at a 175kW charging rate, taking around 30 minutes for the same charge; only the Long Range and Performance variants unlock 250kW Supercharging.

For local drivers in Hong Kong, it is not just about raw charging speeds——it is about accessibility. Tesla's Supercharger network is second to none across Hong Kong, offering comprehensive coverage, plenty of stalls, and seamless plug-and-charge convenience. BYD, by contrast, relies on the public charging infrastructure, where high-output 800V ultra-fast chargers remain relatively limited for now.Whether there is a Tesla Supercharger site or an ultra-fast 230kW public station closer to your doorstep will likely influence your buying decision far more than paper specs.

Interior & Equipment: Minimalist tech vs loaded luxury

Step inside, and the two cabins head in completely opposite directions. The Model Y adheres strictly to Tesla's signature minimalist aesthetic: one giant central touchscreen, no separate digital cluster in front of the driver, and virtually every vehicle control routed through the display or voice commands. The upside is an ultra-clean, uncluttered cabin; the drawback is the lack of a dedicated driver's instrument binnacle, which takes some getting used to for motorists transitioning from conventional petrol cars.

The Sealion 7, on the other hand, comes packed with kit: a 10.25-inch dedicated digital driver display, a 15.6-inch floating rotating touchscreen, a 12-speaker Dynaudio premium sound system, and FSD variable frequency damping dampers. Sitting in the cabin feels reminiscent of a premium European petrol SUV, with generous equipment levels from the get-go.

To put it simply: at a comparable price point, the Sealion 7 definitely punches above its weight in perceived cabin plushness and material quality. But if you value stripped-back cabin ergonomics and Tesla's smooth, intuitive software ecosystem, the Model Y's minimalist interior remains hard to beat.

Practicality & Cabin Space: Model Y boasts a massive boot advantage

In exterior dimensions, the Sealion 7 is slightly longer overall (4,830mm vs 4,790mm) with a 40mm longer wheelbase, translating into slightly more generous rear legroom for passengers.

However, when it comes to outright cargo capacity, the Model Y takes the crown by a wide margin: maximum cargo volume tops out at an impressive 2,138L, whereas the Sealion 7 manages 1,789L with the rear seats folded down——a massive 349L deficit. If your weekends frequently involve packing bulky camping equipment, sports gear, or multiple suitcases for family staycations, the Model Y offers far superior utility. To its credit, the Sealion 7 does feature a neat 58L frunk under the bonnet, ideal for storing charging cables and smaller miscellaneous items.

Drivetrain & Performance: Entry trims level, AWD models neck and neck

Both rear-wheel-drive entry trims deliver the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint in around 5.9 seconds, meaning everyday city driving and cut-and-thrust overtaking feel largely identical.

Step up to the dual-motor all-wheel-drive flagships, however, and the dynamic becomes fascinating: the Sealion 7 dishes out a whopping combined 390kW (531PS) with a 0-100km/h sprint of 4.4 seconds, while the Model Y Long Range AWD clocks in at 4.3 seconds. Despite BYD holding a substantial advantage on paper in terms of raw horsepower, the sprint time differs by a mere tenth of a second——underscoring Tesla's class-leading motor calibration, torque distribution, and thermal efficiency.

Which one is the smarter buy?

Go for the Model Y if you:

  • Routinely cover long distances and value the sheer convenience of Tesla's extensive Supercharger network
  • Frequently haul bulky cargo, where cavernous boot capacity is a non-negotiable requirement
  • Prefer a clutter-free, minimalist interior backed by robust OTA software updates and an intuitive UI
  • Place high priority on brand residual value and strong second-hand market liquidity in Hong Kong

Go for the Sealion 7 if you:

  • Are shopping with a strict entry budget, where saving HK$68,000 upfront makes immense financial sense
  • Prioritise high-speed 800V DC fast charging capability to minimise dwell times at public hubs
  • Desire a fully loaded cabin complete with a dedicated digital cluster, Dynaudio sound, and adaptive dampers
  • Regularly carry adult passengers in the back and require more accommodating rear legroom

Both contenders are battle-tested sales hits in Hong Kong's competitive EV arena, and their hardware setups are closer than you might think. The ultimate deciding factor doesn't come down to sheet metal alone, but rather your day-to-day charging habits, nearby infrastructure, and interior style preference. The best advice: book test drives back-to-back, get behind the wheel, and see which car fits your daily commute best.
