Hyundai recalls 94,622 Genesis and Genesis G80 sedans in the US over fire risk

Hyundai Motor America has filed a safety recall covering 94,622 Genesis and Genesis G80 sedans in the US, following concerns that a faulty front power seat control switch could cause the seat adjustment motor to keep running and overheat, increasing the risk of a vehicle fire.

According to a recall report published by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the filing was submitted on 8 October 2026. The recall covers selected 2015–2020 model-year vehicles.

Hyundai is still developing a permanent fix. In the meantime, affected owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors, away from other vehicles and buildings, until repairs have been completed.

Which models are affected?

The recall covers two models, both manufactured by Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) in South Korea for the US market. NHTSA estimates that around 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.

The affected models are:

• 2017–2020 Genesis G80: 39,978 vehicles, manufactured between 17 March 2016 and 7 November 2019.
• 2015–2016 Hyundai Genesis: 54,644 vehicles, manufactured between 21 February 2014 and 24 February 2016.

Importantly, the recall applies only to vehicles equipped with non-memory power seats. Models with memory seat functions are not affected.

What is causing the fire risk?

According to the NHTSA recall report, an impact on the front seat adjustment control switch could dislodge internal components and cause the switch to become stuck. This could leave the seat adjustment motor running continuously, even after the vehicle has been switched off and its occupants have left.

If the motor continues to operate, it could overheat and potentially cause a fire.

As of the recall decision date, two suspected fire incidents had been reported in the US. Luckily, no crashes or injuries had been reported.

What should affected owners do?

Hyundai is still working on a permanent repair and has yet to announce the specific fix. Until repairs are available, affected owners should park outdoors and keep their vehicles away from other vehicles and buildings.

Owner notification letters are expected to be sent out on 6 December 2026. Once the repair is finalised, owners can have the issue fixed free of charge at an authorised dealership.

Owners who have already paid to address the same problem may also be eligible for reimbursement under Hyundai's reimbursement programme.
