BYD opens Hong Kong's first megawatt charger in a government car park, targets 100 stations by 2027

BYD has opened Hong Kong's first megawatt flash charging station at a government car park, located at Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park in Sai Ying Pun. The facility began operating on 30 October 2026 and was developed in partnership with EV POWER and iCar Group.

BYD also plans to expand its flash charging network to around 100 stations across Hong Kong by 2027, with charging services available to compatible electric vehicles from other brands.

At the opening ceremony, Acting Secretary for Environment and Ecology Diane Wong was briefed by representatives from BYD and EV POWER on the station's charging equipment, including its main power unit, charging dispensers and energy storage cabinets. She was also shown how the system operates, how charging fees are calculated and how the technology can make EV charging more convenient.

Other attendees included representatives from the Environment and Ecology Bureau, BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division Sales Director Ouyang Xiaocheng, EV POWER CEO Chan Chun-hung and General Manager Chung Hon-sum, and iCar's BYD Asia-Pacific and Hong Kong General Manager Qu Jianlei.

The new station uses the European-standard CCS2 charging connector, allowing it to serve compatible BYD vehicles as well as EVs from other manufacturers that meet the relevant charging requirements.

For vehicles equipped to support BYD's flash charging technology, the company claims a 10–70% charge can take as little as five minutes, while charging from 10% to 97% takes approximately nine minutes under suitable conditions.

These figures depend on the vehicle's charging capabilities, battery conditions and available charging power. They are not necessarily achievable by every EV using the station.

The facility entered public service immediately after the opening ceremony, providing an additional charging option for residents, commuters and other drivers in the Sai Ying Pun area.

The Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park installation follows the opening of Hong Kong's first European-standard BYD flash charging station at Gold Coast in Tuen Mun in September 2026.

While the Tuen Mun site marked the introduction of the technology in a commercial setting, the latest installation brings megawatt charging to a public government car park.

BYD plans to accelerate the rollout of its flash charging network, targeting around 100 stations across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories by 2027.

The wider network is intended to give drivers more convenient access to high-power charging, while supporting Hong Kong's transition towards electric vehicles.
