Audi and SAIC open new Shanghai R&D centre, four China-specific models planned from 2028

Audi and SAIC Motor have stepped up their partnership with the opening of a new AUDI Innovation & Technology Center (AITC) in Shanghai.

The facility will focus on developing vehicles exclusively for the AUDI brand in China, with four new models planned on the next-generation ADP 2.0 platform. The first is expected to arrive in 2028.

The Shanghai team has 300 people

The new Shanghai centre will oversee the full development process for China-specific AUDI models, from initial concept and vehicle engineering through to preparation for production. It will have a team of around 300 people, combining Audi's engineering expertise with SAIC's local development capabilities.

The aim is to shorten development times and ensure future models are better aligned with the expectations of Chinese buyers, particularly in areas such as intelligent technology and digital experiences.

Four models planned on the ADP 2.0 platform

The AITC will lead work on the next-generation Advanced Digitized Platform (ADP 2.0), which will underpin four new AUDI models for China. The first is scheduled to arrive in 2028, although Audi and SAIC have yet to reveal the model names, pricing or technical specifications.

The new line-up will expand the China-specific AUDI range, which is being developed separately for the local market.

AI-powered cabins and driver assistance

Beyond vehicle development, the centre will work on AI-powered cockpits, advanced driver assistance systems and technologies related to software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and AI-defined vehicles (AIDVs).

Audi plans to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into cabin interactions and driver assistance, with the aim of delivering more intelligent features in future models.

The new facility gives the partnership a dedicated base for bringing local customer requirements, digital technologies and China's supply chain more directly into the vehicle development process.

Whether any of the four models or the technologies developed at the centre will eventually make their way to Hong Kong remains to be seen.
