FREELANDER has officially released the first official images of its inaugural model, confirming the name Freelander 8. Positioned as a premium technology‑laden all‑terrain SUV, the vehicle will make its world premiere in China in the second half of 2026, followed by global markets.

The Freelander 8 combines rugged off‑road DNA with contemporary sophistication. A large closed or semi‑closed front grille integrates seamlessly with digital matrix LED headlights. Lower silver skid plates and large air intakes reinforce its all‑terrain character. Hidden door handles, a floating roof and large alloy wheels enhance the premium profile. At the rear, a full‑width LED light bar with parametric detailing ensures high visibility.

Dimensionally, the “8” badge suggests a large mid‑size SUV, likely between 4.9 and 5.1 metres in length, with a wheelbase exceeding 2.9 metres. Five‑seat and seven‑seat layouts will be available. A roof‑mounted LiDAR unit hints at advanced driver assistance capabilities.

The Freelander name, launched by Land Rover in 1997, was credited as the pioneer of the premium compact SUV segment, selling over one million units worldwide. After the model line was discontinued in 2015, the brand now returns as an independent marque focused on premium all‑terrain EVs and hybrids. Six models are planned over the next five years, with the Freelander 8 debuting in China in late 2026 before expanding to Europe, the Middle East and Asia‑Pacific.

Built on a new electrified architecture, the Freelander 8 will offer both BEV and PHEV variants. The BEV version uses an 800V platform with a large battery delivering a CLTC range exceeding 700 km. The PHEV version offers a combined range over 1,000 km. An intelligent all‑terrain response system with multiple driving modes, air suspension and rear‑wheel active steering ensures both off‑road capability and on‑road comfort.
For ADAS, a roof‑mounted LiDAR enables highway and urban navigation assist, plus full‑scene auto parking.

Expected to price between RMB 300,000 and 500,000, the Freelander 8 will compete with the Land Rover Discovery Sport, BYD Yangwang U8, Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8 and Li Auto L9. Its key advantages are the iconic Freelander heritage, proven all‑terrain expertise and a cutting‑edge electrified platform.

For Hong Kong buyers, right‑hand‑drive availability is yet to be confirmed, but the model is certainly worth watching. More details will follow after its China debut.
