Yudo π1

2026-10-02 20:50:00

Model Overview

The Yudo π1 is an all-electric compact SUV introduced by Yudo New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd., which was officially launched on 10 October 2017. As Yudo Auto's first mass-produced model, the π1 was tasked with spearheading the market entry for the EV start-up. At launch, four variants were offered across two trims—Urban Edition and Intercity Edition—with pre-subsidy prices ranging from RM138,900 to RM197,500, and post-subsidy prices starting between RM74,900 and RM114,900 (taking the Beijing market as a reference). In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,010 mm in length, 1,729 mm in width, and 1,621 mm in height, with a 2,460 mm wheelbase. The 2023 model carried a manufacturer's recommended retail price of RM79,800. By 2024, clearance prices for selected units dropped to RM45,800. By July 2023, Yudo Auto filed for bankruptcy following a severe cash flow crisis, and the Yudo π1 was officially discontinued.

Design Language

Exterior-wise, the Yudo π1 features the signature gloss-black fully enclosed front grille typical of pure EVs, with AC and DC charging ports concealed behind the central brand emblem. The headlights sport a smoked finish with sharp, angular styling; the sculpted lower bumper integrates a black honeycomb mesh pattern, lending a sportier front profile. Along the sides, a dual-waistline design imparts a forward-raked stance. Functional roof rails enhance both practicality and visual contouring. It rides on 10-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in 205/60 R16 Giti tyres. The rear end adopts a bottom-heavy, planted proportion that gives a sturdy road presence; the rear combination tail lamps blend LED light strips with halogen bulbs, mirroring the front lighting signatures. Five exterior colour options are available: Polar White, Ice Blue, Phantom Red, Streamer Silver, and Mountain Brown.

Inside, the Yudo π1 keeps things minimal, featuring an uncluttered T-shaped dashboard layout. Early production models featured a detachable multimedia tablet functioning as the infotainment screen, paired with a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a floating digital instrument cluster, and a rotary gear selector. The later LITE Fun Edition received an upgraded 10.25-inch high-definition central touchscreen. Hard plastics feature heavily across the cabin trims. The steering wheel is finished in plastic. The seats are upholstered in synthetic leather.

Powertrain Performance

The Yudo π1 was offered with two powertrain configurations depending on the variant. The Urban Edition is powered by a TZ230XS02B electric motor producing a rated output of 25 kW and a peak output of 55 kW with 170 Nm of torque; the Intercity Edition features a TZ200XSYD1 electric motor delivering a rated 31 kW and a peak 85 kW with 250 Nm of torque. The 2023 model year and subsequent variants standardised on a front-mounted single motor delivering a maximum of 55 kW. Top speed is rated at 105 km/h.

For battery capacity and range, the Urban Edition is fitted with a 24 kWh ternary lithium battery pack providing a combined range of 150 km and a maximum range of 200 km; the Intercity Edition packs a 38–40 kWh ternary lithium battery, delivering a combined range of 250 km and a maximum range of 330 km. The LITE Light Edition and LITE Enjoy Edition introduced in 2022 swapped to a 41.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery sourced from REPT, delivering an NEDC-rated range of 351 km. With DC fast charging, a 0–80% state of charge takes 0.75 hours; AC charging on the 2023 model takes around 7 hours.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the Yudo π1 rides on a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup. The traction battery pack is mounted flat along the floorpan. The suspension damping leans towards the firmer side, offering modest bump absorption; sharp road imperfections filter directly into the cabin, slightly compromising overall ride comfort. Cabin noise suppression is average, with wind noise noticeably intruding at highway speeds. However, reviews have commended the chassis for offering sufficient lateral body support through consecutive turns. Steering is assisted by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. The car utilizes a monocoque body construction. Stopping power is managed by front ventilated discs and rear drum brakes, paired with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) as standard.

Cabin and Features

On the tech and cabin front, early iterations of the Yudo π1 were equipped with a removable tablet serving as the central head unit. The 2022 LITE Fun Edition upgraded to a fixed 10.25-inch HD display (1920×720 resolution) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon octa-core chip, supporting dual-4G connectivity. The infotainment system supports online voice commands for navigation, music streaming, radio, and hands-free calls, alongside a built-in in-car karaoke (KTV) app. Standard equipment includes keyless push-start, remote vehicle telematics, and an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). The base variant introduced in 2022 saw cost-cutting omissions like OTA updates, front parking sensors, a reverse camera, LED headlights, and the 10.25-inch screen, though these remained optional on the LITE Enjoy Edition. Boot capacity is adequate for daily commutes, with fold-down rear seats provided to expand luggage volume.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

Safety-wise, the Yudo π1 comes standard across the range with dual front airbags (driver and front passenger), ABS, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is also standard across all trims. However, higher-spec active and passive safety features—such as front side airbags, rear side airbags, Brake Assist (EBA/BAS), Traction Control (ASR/TCS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC/ESP)—are entirely absent across the line-up. Forward Collision Warning (FCW) is likewise omitted. When it comes to advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), the π1 does not support Level 2 autonomy, omitting features like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Automated Parking. Overall safety equipment remains rudimentary, reflecting entry-level segment standards.

Market Performance and Reception

As Yudo Auto's pioneer production model, the π1 garnered noticeable initial market interest thanks to its aggressive budget pricing strategy. In 2018, Yudo posted full-year sales of 9,300 units, momentarily emerging as China's second best-selling EV start-up behind NIO. However, momentum quickly fizzled out, with annual sales tumbling to 2,566 units in 2019. By 2020, total π1 sales hovered around 3,152 units. Figures deteriorated progressively thereafter, culminating in zero units delivered in December 2023. In January 2024, brand-wide sales for Yudo New Energy remained at absolute zero.

In 2022, Yudo lowered the π1's entry barrier from RM106,800 to RM69,800 with the rollout of the budget-oriented LITE Light Edition and LITE Enjoy Edition, attempting a price-driven survival bid. However, the stripped-down, price-slashing strategy failed to arrest the sales slump. In February 2022, Yudo halted production amidst severe cash flow insolvency; by July 2023, the automaker formally filed for bankruptcy. Among owners, the π1 was appreciated for its low running costs and green-plate registration perks. Nonetheless, the 2023 model drew customer complaints over degraded power output and battery reliability glitches. In summary, as an early entrant from China's first wave of EV start-ups, the Yudo π1 made a fleeting impression through accessible electric mobility; however, plagued by weak brand equity, subpar product reliability, and terminal financial woes, its commercial lifecycle could not be sustained.
