LITE is a wholly-owned sub-brand under BAIC BJEV, officially established in 2017 and headquartered in Beijing. The brand name signifies "Lightweight and Convenient." Positioned as a high-end boutique micro electric vehicle brand, LITE focuses on creating "fun mobility" pure electric vehicles for young consumer groups. As the vanguard of BAIC BJEV’s brand upgrade strategy, LITE incorporates part of the ARCFOX brand’s technology, design, and fun DNA, and is regarded as a strong competitor to the Chinese version of the "MINI."

History

The LITE concept originated in 2015. Its prototype first debuted at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show. Subsequently, the ARCFOX-1 convertible concept car appeared at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, and its production concept version premiered at the Guangzhou Auto Show that same year. After three years of R&D, BAIC BJEV officially released the new model "LITE" in August 2017.

On September 16, 2017, LITE officially went on sale, offering two configurations: Origin Edition and Gravity Edition. LITE is the first artificial intelligence electric vehicle launched by BAIC BJEV. In December of the same year, LITE became the first Chinese two-door, two-seater pure electric vehicle to obtain the EU WVTA Whole Vehicle Type Certification Certificate, securing the “visa” to sell in Europe.

At the beginning of 2018, LITE opened its first flagship delivery experience center in Laiguangying, Beijing, which was seen as a sign of the implementation of its “1+1+1” innovative channel model. In April of the same year, LITE autonomous driving vehicles (developed based on the Baidu Apollo platform) obtained Beijing autonomous driving road test licenses, becoming the world’s first production model to obtain L3-level road test licenses. In May 2019, LITE launched the facelifted product LITE-R300.

Entering the 2020s, LITE’s market performance was weak, with monthly sales dropping to single digits. As of early 2026, although the brand has not officially announced a production stop, both its product matrix and marketing efforts are in a state of de facto stagnation.

Product Portfolio

LITE’s core product matrix includes the LITE and the LITE-R300.

LITE is the brand’s first model, positioned as a Class A00 two-door, two-seater pure electric microcar. Its body dimensions are 2,986 mm in length, 1,676 mm in width, and 1,492 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 1,870 mm and a curb weight of only 895 kg. When launched in 2017, it offered four configurations: Origin Edition, Gravity Edition, and two limited editions. This car was the world’s first production vehicle equipped with external front and rear LED color screens. The first-generation model had a combined NEDC range of 150 km and a 60 km/h constant speed range of 200 km.

LITE-R300 is a high-range facelift model launched by LITE in 2019. The main technical upgrades are as follows:

Powertrain: Rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, with a maximum power of 40 kW (original version 36 kW) and maximum torque of 140 N·m (original version 120 N·m).

Battery: Farasis Energy 32 kWh Ternary Lithium Battery, with an energy density of 140 Wh/kg.

Range: NEDC range of 300 km (original version 150 km).

LITE’s personalized customization is one of its biggest highlights, offering over 48,000 customization combination schemes. The brand pioneered the C2M online ordering model in the automotive industry, allowing users to customize and place orders online via the official website.

Market Performance

LITE’s market performance showed a trend of starting high and dropping low. In the initial period of launch, from late 2017 to early 2018, monthly sales were about 60–140 vehicles, peaking at 300 vehicles in March 2019. Entering 2020, monthly sales plummeted to single digits, with a record low of only one vehicle sold in a month in 2021. The facelift model LITE-R300 also had a plain market reception. Later, LITE accounted for less than 1% of BAIC BJEV’s monthly sales share, and the brand’s strategic positioning gradually became marginalized.

The main reasons for poor sales include relatively high pricing (starting at 86,800 RMB after subsidies in the initial phase, and 110,800 RMB after subsidies for the R300 version), vague product positioning, insufficient brand differentiation, and intensifying competition in the micro electric vehicle market.

Technology and Innovation

LITE’s core technologies are mainly reflected in the following three dimensions:

Lightweight Body: It was one of the first vehicles in the small car segment to adopt a full aluminum alloy lightweight body combined with a cage frame design. Innovative riveting processes increased connection strength by 25% compared to traditional welding, providing safety comparable to Class B vehicles.

Battery, Motor, and Drive Systems: The vehicle adopted ATL Ternary Lithium Batteries (first generation) and the e-Motion Drive intelligent drive system. It featured a rare rear-wheel drive layout for its class, with professional electric vehicle chassis tuning that balanced handling flexibility and climbing performance.

Smart Cockpit: LITE pioneered a 5-screen interconnection design, consisting of three through-console large screens and two external front and rear LED screens. It supports Baidu CarLife, voice interaction, automatic parking, 360° panoramic image, and blind spot detection.

Global Presence

LITE had two major key moves in overseas layout. The first was obtaining EU WVTA certification, becoming the first Chinese two-door two-seater pure electric vehicle to obtain an export passport to Europe. LITE was approved for sale in Europe, with initial configurations kept consistent with the domestic version, but large-scale export plans were shelved due to stricter European market certification standards and global supply chain issues. The second was participating in overseas tours; LITE toured multiple cities on the U.S. East Coast in 2017 for promotion. Although taking the first step towards internationalization, the brand did not achieve large-scale sales in overseas markets.

Future Outlook

As of 2026, the future prospects of the LITE brand are highly uncertain, mainly existing in two possible scenarios. Considering that BAIC BJEV’s current strategic focus has shifted to the ARCFOX brand, the “high-end boutique small car” positioned LITE has been downgraded within BAIC. Even if the brand is still operating, its product line will face huge competitive pressure from same-level competitors such as the Wuling Mini EV and Changan Lumin. If it cannot launch a truly disruptive next-generation product, the prospects for brand revival are slim.

LITE will also find it difficult to inject into overseas markets on a large scale like its predecessor, Mycar. BAIC BJEV’s overseas strategy has completely shifted, and the LITE project’s export team has basically disbanded. Although LITE has not been officially announced as discontinued, in the 2025–2026 BAIC BJEV financial reports and sales bulletins, the LITE brand has basically disappeared, listed under the “Other Vehicles” category. The pioneer that once took the first step for Chinese brands in “product upgrade” and “going global” in the field of small boutique electric vehicles now sees its brand state described as a “Zombie Brand,” overall in a frozen state.
