Model Overview

The TANK 300 New Energy is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) compact rugged 4x4 SUV produced under Great Wall Motor's (GWM) dedicated TANK brand. Serving as the PHEV derivative of the TANK 300 series, the model made its debut on 22 April 2024 with a limited production run of just 3,000 units for 2024, priced at an official retail price of RM269,800. On 10 March 2025, the 2025 TANK 300 Hi4-T was officially launched with a revised price tag of RM249,800. The lineup was subsequently broadened to include both the 37.1 kWh battery version and a new CATL-supplied 36.7 kWh battery version introduced in December 2025, both priced identically at RM249,800. By 2026, the TANK 300 range has fully transitioned towards electrification, offering two distinct PHEV variants: the Hi4-T and the Hi4-Z. Marketed as a lifestyle off-road SUV, its primary competitors include hardcore off-roaders in the same segment, such as the Fangchengbao Bao 5 and Beijing BJ40.

Design Language

The TANK 300 New Energy retains the signature boxy, rugged styling of its petrol-powered sibling. Up front, it features a bold rectangular front grille detailed with three thick horizontal chrome slats, flanked by retro round LED headlamps to deliver a distinctive, cohesive front fascia. The 2024 model was offered in six exterior shades, including an exclusive Lightning Blue paintwork. The 2025 model expands the palette with a variety of vibrant colour options such as Wave Grey, Desired Orange, Dune Beige, Pineapple Black, and Rich White. The 2026 facelift brings refreshed front grille and bumper designs, while the front "T" emblem has been replaced with prominent "TANK" block lettering for an even bolder road presence. In terms of dimensions, the 2024/2025 models measure 4,760 (4,750) mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,903 mm in height, riding on a 2,750 mm wheelbase. The 2026 facelift sees a substantial increase in size, measuring 4,886 mm long, 1,984 mm wide, and 1,927 mm tall, with the wheelbase stretched to 3,010 mm. At the rear, an externally mounted spare tyre and vertical tail lamps further accentuate its authentic off-road credentials.

Inside, the Hi4-T cabin is available in several interior colour schemes, including Black/Grey, all-Black, and Black/Red. Premium soft-touch leather is generously applied throughout, accompanied by Nappa leather seats embossed with the TANK logo for a refined, tactile feel. The cockpit is fitted with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 14.6-inch (or 12.3-inch) central infotainment touchscreen. Higher-spec variants come equipped with a 540-degree transparent chassis camera, an Infinity premium audio system, a 50W Qi wireless smartphone charging pad, and heated/ventilated front seats. The 2026 model is slated to receive the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset running on the Coffee OS 3.0 operating system.

Powertrain & Performance

The TANK 300 New Energy is powered by a plug-in hybrid system pairing a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a P2 electric motor. The combustion engine produces a maximum output of 185 kW (252 PS) and a peak torque of 385 Nm, while the electric motor delivers 120 kW and 400 Nm of torque. Combined, the system generates an impressive total output of 300 kW and 750 Nm. Power is channelled through a 9HAT dedicated hybrid automatic transmission. The official century sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is completed in 6.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 180 km/h. On the WLTC cycle, combined fuel consumption is rated at 2.06 L/100 km, while fuel consumption in charge-sustaining (depleted battery) mode stands at 8.8 L/100 km.

On the electric driving range front, initial models were equipped with a 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack from SVOLT, whereas the updated variant introduced in December 2025 is fitted with a 36.7 kWh pack from CATL. Both battery configurations deliver an identical WLTC pure electric range of 105 km. DC fast charging is supported up to 50 kW, taking just 24 minutes to juice up from 30% to 80% state of charge, while AC slow charging at 6.6 kW requires 6.5 hours for a full charge. The vehicle also features a 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power supply function.

The 2026 facelift lineup offers two distinct PHEV setups: the Hi4-T and the Hi4-Z. The Hi4-T carries a 37.1 kWh battery with an all-electric range of 105 km, purpose-built for hardcore off-road duties; the Hi4-Z packs a larger 59.6 kWh battery delivering up to 200 km of WLTC pure electric range, catering primarily to daily urban commuting and light trail driving. Both variants share the 185 kW 2.0T powerplant paired with the 9HAT hybrid gearbox.

Chassis & Handling

The TANK 300 New Energy is built on a heavy-duty ladder frame chassis (body-on-frame). It utilizes a double-wishbone independent suspension at the front and a multi-link solid axle setup at the rear. The 4WD system on the Hi4-T is an electronically controlled part-time four-wheel-drive system with selectable 2H (high-range 2WD), 4H (high-range 4WD), and 4L (low-range 4WD) modes, capable of locking both front and rear axles. Torque is substantially multiplied in 4L mode. Retaining a non-decoupled mechanical 4WD layout, the Hi4-T preserves essential hardcore off-road hardware such as low-range transfer gearing and differential locks. In terms of obstacle clearance, it boasts an approach angle of 32°, a departure angle of 33°, a ramp breakover angle of 22°, minimum ground clearance of 222 mm, and a maximum water wading depth of 700 mm. Off-road driver assistance tech includes TANK Turn, Crawl Control, and a transparent chassis monitor. Kerb weight is rated at 2,645 kg, with a maximum braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg.

Cabin & Equipment

The digital cockpit of the TANK 300 New Energy is driven by GWM's latest infotainment software. It features a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch (or 14.6-inch) central touchscreen display. The 2026 model upgrades to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip and Coffee OS 3.0, supporting high-level driver assistance features. For seating comfort, the front seats offer power adjustment (8-way for driver, 4-way for passenger), heating, and ventilation, with the driver's seat further gaining lumbar massage, memory settings, and an easy-entry welcome function. The rear seat backrests feature two-stage recline adjustment. Acoustic duties are handled by an Infinity premium sound system. Rolling stock comes standard with 18-inch highway terrain tyres, with factory options including 18-inch all-terrain (A/T) tyres (RM2,000), power deployable side steps + digital streaming rearview mirror (RM6,000), and a front axle differential lock + factory tow package (RM8,000).

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance

Safety is anchored by a high-strength ladder frame structure. Passive safety equipment includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags. On the active safety front, the SUV is fitted with driver aids such as a 540-degree panoramic surround-view camera. The 2026 facelift model will introduce a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor for the first time, unlocking high-level semi-autonomous driving capabilities. In addition, an array of off-road safety aids is standard, encompassing TANK Turn and Crawl Control.

Market Performance & Verdict

Since its market entry, the TANK 300 New Energy has undergone strategic pricing realignments and model updates. The initial 2024 Hi4-T was limited to 3,000 units at RM269,800, while the subsequent 2025 model saw its entry price adjusted downwards to RM249,800. In terms of overall sales, the entire TANK 300 nameplate (spanning both ICE and PHEV variants) registered 48,879 deliveries in 2025, cementing its leadership in the rugged SUV segment. For the New Energy variant specifically, monthly sales from October to December 2025 stood at 2,942, 2,417, and 1,508 units respectively; while deliveries from January to April 2026 recorded 949, 437, 904, and 967 units. By the end of 2025, cumulative global deliveries of the TANK 300 surpassed 500,000 units, dominating China's rugged off-road SUV segment as the top-seller for 52 consecutive months with a market share exceeding 50%, alongside an impressive three-year residual value retention rate of 70.15%.

From owner feedback, the TANK 300 New Energy is widely praised for its versatile "EV in the city, petrol in the wild" character—with 750 Nm of combined torque delivering effortless smoothness around town and formidable hill-climbing and obstacle-clearing prowess off the beaten track. Its pure electric range easily handles daily urban commutes, while stationary generator charging and external V2L output add tremendous utility for camping and overland expeditions. The striking boxy profile also commands high road presence, a major selling point among lifestyle buyers. On the downside, some owners have pointed out minor assembly quality issues such as wide window weatherstrip gaps and loose interior window trim pieces, while early buyers of the 2024 limited edition voiced frustration over the RM20,000 price drop on the 2025 model. Isolated reports regarding turbocharger heat build-up and coolant loss have also surfaced. Overall, underpinned by the Hi4-T hybrid architecture, a genuine ladder frame chassis, part-time 4WD, a 6.7-second 0-100 km/h sprint, and a 105 km pure EV range, the TANK 300 New Energy remains a benchmark contender in the RM200,000 to RM250,000 PHEV rugged off-roader class. The imminent arrival of the Hi4-Z variant in 2026 is set to broaden its appeal even further among urban-centric commuters.
