Sehol Yao

2026-09-29 23:50:00

The Sehol Yao is a compact smart four-door coupe launched by Sehol Passenger Vehicles in 2021. Built on the MIS Haoxue architecture, it targets Gen-Z buyers. With its punchy 1.5T powertrain (184 hp/300 Nm), long 2,770 mm wheelbase, and generous smart tech suite as key selling points, the car represents Sehol's strategic offering in the ICE sporty family sedan segment.

Model Overview

Positioned as a compact fastback sedan, the car sits under JAC Group's Sehol Passenger Vehicles brand. Key highlights include its 4,772 mm length, 2,770 mm wheelbase, liftback tailgate (540–1,650 L expandable boot), 1.5T GDI engine (184 hp/300 Nm), six-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT), and an array of smart tech features. The 2021 model lineup comprised six variants priced between RM98,800 and RM134,800, while the 2022 Black Knight Edition was priced at RM108,800; the range-topping Race Edition commanded RM134,800. Overall dimensions measure 4,780/1,820/1,492 mm with a 2,770 mm wheelbase in a five-door, five-seater liftback profile, boasting a drag coefficient of 0.26 Cd.

Design Language

On the outside, the Sehol Yao adopts a low-slung, swooping coupe stance complemented by an all-round sporty bodykit and bright accent strips. The front end gets a split-grille design featuring a slim upper section and an aggressive lower intake, flanked by matrix LED headlights. The sleek side profile carries a fastback silhouette with smoked alloy wheels and red brake calipers, while the top-spec Race Edition adds an active aero rear spoiler. Around the back, full-width taillights are paired with a diffuser-style rear bumper and dual exhaust decorative trims. Exterior colour options include Pearl White, Obsidian Grey, Cool Black, and Carmona Red.

Inside, the cabin features a T-shaped floating centre console anchored by a 10.4-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment display. High-spec variants sport two-tone red-and-black sports seats with integrated headrests that offer snug bolstering. Also on board is a 142-LED smart ambient lighting system capable of pulsing in sync with music rhythms.

Powertrain & Performance

Across the 2021 and 2022 lineups, power comes from a HFC4GC1.6E 1.5-litre turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine producing 135 kW (184 hp) and 300 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 3,500 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The official 0–100 km/h sprint is completed in 7.6 seconds en route to a 210 km/h top speed. Rated WLTC combined fuel consumption is 6.98 L/100 km, against real-world owner averages of around 8.3 L/100 km. A dedicated Track Mode with launch control is also available.

Notably, the range once listed an exorbitant RM192,800 variant (Flagship Zhizun), though market analysts widely viewed this as a promotional headline grabber rather than a commercially viable option.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the chassis employs front MacPherson struts and an independent rear multi-link suspension setup (on the 2022 Black Knight Edition). It features electric power steering (EPS) and an electronic parking brake (EPB). It rides on 225/45 R18 tyres with a space-saver spare tyre. High-spec variants can also be optioned with an active valved sports exhaust system for an enhanced exhaust note.

Cabin & Features

The cabin is fitted with a 10.4-inch portrait touchscreen supporting 4G telematics and OTA updates. The onboard voice control system, co-developed with iFLYTEK, supports up to 90 seconds of continuous dialogue. Standard equipment includes cruise control, a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, auto brake hold, and hill-start assist. Higher trims add a digital key (Bluetooth + NFC) and the CSS Child Safety Monitoring System.

AP automated parking system: The Flagship Zhizun variant features 12 ultrasonic sensors and four HD cameras, enabling automated parking across parallel, perpendicular, and angled parking bays.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Passive safety kit includes standard dual front airbags, front side airbags, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Standard active safety features encompass ABS with EBD, Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TCS), and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP).

Level 2 semi-autonomous driving (optional on high-spec trims): Includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Lane Keep Assist (LKA).

Compared to the 2021 high-spec trims, safety kit on the 2022 Black Knight Edition was scaled down, omitting Level 2 ADAS and relegating the 360-degree camera to the options list.

Market Performance & Verdict

The Sehol Yao initially drew attention thanks to its aggressive styling and generous spec sheet, recording monthly sales of roughly 300 to 500 units by December 2022. However, by November 2024, published sales figures fell to zero units, signalling that production has effectively ceased.

Owner feedback (scoring higher than 93% of rivals on PCauto) frequently praises its sporty styling, generous rear legroom from the 2,770 mm wheelbase, and cavernous liftback boot. On the downside, complaints highlight cheap interior plastics, relatively heavy fuel consumption (owners averaging 8.3 L/100 km), and weak brand presence. Some owners also reported occasional lag in the infotainment system.

As Sehol's sporty family sedan, the Yao delivers solid performance, good cabin room, and standout practicality courtesy of its liftback boot. However, hindered by low brand recognition, relatively high fuel consumption, fragmented ADAS availability across variants, and effective discontinuation after 2024, it is hard to recommend as a new purchase today. For those browsing the used car market, the 2021 second-from-top trim (Race Edition) is worth a look—offering the factory sports bodykit and full ADAS suite for an original list price of RM134,800, which could present decent value at current pre-owned market rates.
