2026-09-27 06:40:00

Model Overview

The SWM G03 EDi marks a key strategic foray by SWM into the new energy vehicle (NEV) segment. Currently, the market features two NEV models bearing the "G03" and "EDi" nameplates: the SWM Big Tiger EDi launched in 2023, and the SWM G03F EDI unveiled in 2025. Both models share the EDi (Electrical Drive-intelligent) smart hybrid electric drive platform co-developed with BYD's FinDreams Powertrain, signaling SWM's official entry into the new energy SUV arena.

As SWM's first range-extended electric vehicle (REEV), the SWM Big Tiger EDi officially debuted on 6 February 2023. Positioned as an accessible 100k-yuan-bracket range-extended full 7-seater SUV, it is offered in 8 variants with prices ranging from RM99,900 to RM123,900. Meanwhile, the SWM G03F EDI serves as a mid-life facelift, first previewed via official images by international media and slated for production at the Chongqing Fuling plant, with an estimated starting price of around RM237,600. Both models emphasise generous cabin space, versatile multi-seat layouts, and cost-effective dual-fuel/electric capability, making them among the most budget-friendly range-extended hybrid SUVs on the market today.

Design Language

The SWM G03 EDi series retains identical body dimensions, measuring 4,605 mm (L) × 1,815 mm (W) × 1,825 mm (H) with a 2,780 mm wheelbase, offering a choice of 5-seater and 7-seater configurations. The exterior adopts a rugged off-road styling approach, highlighted by a front fascia with a semi-enclosed smoked grille sporting a prominent SWM badge, complemented by dual-lens squarish LED headlamps that deliver a tough, utilitarian presence. A sculpted bonnet paired with black off-road scratch-resistant wheel arch cladding and side skirts enhances its rugged off-roader aesthetic whilst keeping repair costs low in minor scrapes. The side profile features squarish, boxy lines that convey robust strength, leading to a clean, practical rear end fitted with vertical LED tail lamps and an unpainted black rear bumper designed to minimise repair bills from low-speed knocks.

Inside, the SWM Big Tiger EDi features a Misty Blue dual-tone floating cockpit layout, equipped with a 7-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment display. Physical buttons are retained below the centre console to blend modern tech with everyday usability. Selected range-topping variants gain an electronic rotary gear selector, further elevating the modern cabin vibe.

Powertrain & Performance

At the heart of the SWM G03 EDi series is the dedicated EDi range-extender hybrid powertrain co-developed with BYD's FinDreams Powertrain, paired with an Atkinson-cycle 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine acting purely as an onboard generator without directly driving the wheels. Propulsion comes from a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor that outputs a maximum of 105 kW (around 143 PS) and 210 Nm of torque. In terms of performance, the 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in under 10 seconds, with a top speed of 155 km/h. The official WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at 2.06 L/100 km, keeping daily running costs to a minimum.

Supplying the power is a high-safety lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack sourced from SVOLT, rated at 8.83 kWh (approx. 8.8 kWh) and featuring liquid cooling. Under NEDC testing, it delivers an all-electric range of 51 km, while the WLTC-rated pure electric range stands at 46 km. With a full tank of fuel and a full charge, the total cruising range reaches up to 1,000 km, effectively eliminating range anxiety. On the charging front, the SWM Big Tiger EDi supports AC slow charging only, taking roughly 3.5 hours for a full charge. It also comes equipped with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse power supply, catering to outdoor and camping power needs.

Chassis & Handling

The SWM G03 EDi lineup runs on a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) architecture, with FWD being the sole drivetrain option. The suspension setup comprises front MacPherson struts and a rear 5-link non-independent rigid axle. The overall chassis tuning leans towards dependable stability, with sturdy core components designed to handle varied daily driving conditions. Braking is handled by front ventilated discs and rear solid discs paired with an electronic parking brake (EPB), with Hill-Start Assist (HSA) fitted as standard across the range. Tyre specifications are standardised at 215/60 R17. A minimum ground clearance of 195 mm ensures respectable obstacle clearance within its class. Drive mode selection is also available. Whether navigating city tarmac or rougher unpaved outskirts, the chassis delivers an adequate driving and riding experience with acceptable bump absorption, roll control, and straight-line stability.

Cabin & Equipment

Smart in-cabin tech is a standout selling point for the SWM G03 EDi series. The SWM Big Tiger EDi is fitted with a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen and a 7-inch full digital instrument screen, supporting intelligent voice control, online GPS navigation, online streaming (QQ Music, etc.), and radio, alongside expandable in-car apps. The infotainment system effortlessly meets on-the-go navigation and multimedia needs. The 2025 SWM G03F EDI ups the ante with an integrated full digital instrument display paired with a floating touchscreen and adds an e-Call emergency assist system for enhanced safety and connectivity. Furthermore, the SWM Big Tiger EDi includes keyless entry with push-start ignition, a multi-function steering wheel, rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera as standard across the range, while higher trims add a 360-degree surround-view monitor. The factory-fitted audio system is tuned for daily listening convenience. Luggage space is decent in its standard setup, expanding up to 3 m³ when folding the third-row seats flat, providing ample room for bulky luggage or camping gear.

Safety & Driver Assistance

When it comes to safety equipment, the SWM G03 EDi series covers the essentials. On the passive safety front, the vehicle comes standard with dual front airbags (driver and front passenger), though front side airbags and full-length curtain airbags are omitted. The body shell is constructed with high-strength steel to provide foundational crash protection. Active safety highlights standard across all variants include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA/BAS), Traction Control System (TCS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC/ESP), as well as a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). For driving assistance, the range is limited to standard cruise control, omitting Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Lane Centring Assist (LCA). As a value-driven workhorse, its safety package strictly focuses on meeting mandatory regulatory baselines.

Market Performance & Verdict

Despite offering commendable value for money in terms of its range-extended powertrain and generous interior room, the SWM Big Tiger EDi has struggled on the sales charts. It registered just 70 units throughout 2023, sitting at 425th place in the domestic SUV market. Sales in January and February 2024 totaled a modest 414 units, capturing a meager 0.09% share of the mid-size SUV segment. Subdued brand recognition, limited dealership reach, and modest marketing pushes are the primary headwinds behind its slow commercial uptake.

From an ownership perspective, drivers appreciate its practical 7-seater space, quiet and refined electric-drive manners, and low petrol-electric running costs. Nevertheless, drawbacks such as limited brand recall, sparse passive safety kit, the lack of DC fast charging across the lineup, and an underdeveloped after-sales support network remain key hurdles to broader market appeal. While the refreshed G03F EDI brings cosmetic updates and equipment upgrades, its ability to significantly turn the tide remains to be seen. As SWM's inaugural range-extended contender, the SWM G03 EDi series holds genuine merit in its core pillars of cavernous cabin room, 7-seat practicality, and 1,000 km touring range. However, to carve out a viable niche in an increasingly competitive market, the brand must invest further in upgrading safety specifications, adding modern ADAS features, supporting faster charging, and strengthening its marketing presence.
