The LDV Maxus EV80 is an all-electric wide-body light commercial vehicle (LCV) under SAIC MAXUS, badged in China as the SAIC MAXUS EV80 / EV80 PLUS / EV80 PRO. The model line stems from technical integration following SAIC Motor's full acquisition of the UK's LDV Group and MAXUS brand assets in 2009. Built on the ICE-powered V80 platform, it was first launched in the Chinese market in November 2014 before rolling out across overseas markets including the UK, Europe, and Australia from 2016 onwards. Over nearly a decade of evolution, the EV80 has developed a comprehensive product lineup comprising variants such as the EV80 PLUS and EV80 PRO, with Chinese official guide prices ranging from RM164,800 to RM249,800. Dimensions vary across body styles: the short-wheelbase (SWB) version measures 4,939 × 1,998 × 2,089 mm (L × W × H) with a 3,100 mm wheelbase, while the long-wheelbase (LWB) high-roof variant expands to 5,700 × 1,998 × 2,552 mm with a 3,850 mm wheelbase. As China's first pure electric wide-body LCV exported to Europe, the EV80 spearheads SAIC MAXUS's global strategy in the electric commercial vehicle segment.
The exterior styling of the EV80 retains the utilitarian, boxy profile of the ICE-powered V80. Up front, a wing-style chrome grille enhances brand identity, flanked by crystal-cut headlamps integrated with multi-slat horizontal grille slats for a solid, purposeful stance. The side profile features clean, straight lines aimed at maximising cargo volume. Being an all-electric model, the EV80 retains the aerodynamic characteristics of the ICE version and is available in diverse configurations, including a panel van, multi-purpose passenger van, chassis cab, and a 10-to-14-seater electric commuter bus. Inside, the cabin follows the V80's no-nonsense, utilitarian design philosophy, featuring a durable, plastic-dominated dashboard with a clean and functional layout. Higher-spec variants gain modern amenities such as a 10-inch HD touchscreen infotainment unit and a multi-function steering wheel, complemented by hard-wearing fabric upholstery and intuitive ergonomics. The EV80 PRO, introduced in 2023, modernises the styling with a wider horizontal fascia, a parametric geometric matrix grille, and banner-inspired front and rear lighting signatures, delivering a more contemporary, tech-forward aesthetic.
The entire EV80 range is powered by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor driving the front wheels. Output figures vary across versions: earlier export models delivered 100 kW and 320 Nm of torque, matching the performance of the V80's 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine (100 kW / 330 Nm). The EV80 PLUS, introduced in 2022, bumped output to 120 kW and 280 Nm, incorporating an upgraded "5-in-1" integrated electric drive unit with highly integrated control modules that lower combined power consumption to 21 kWh/100 km. In terms of battery setups, the EV80 PLUS lineup is fitted with a 51.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, delivering CLTC-rated ranges of 202 km, 244 km, or 250 km depending on kerb weight, alongside a constant-speed cruising range of 300 km. The urban logistics-focused EV80 PRO packs a larger 77 kWh LFP battery boasting an energy density exceeding 146 Wh/kg and a C-WTVC range of 320 km. For charging, DC fast charging on the EV80 PLUS takes around 40 to 120 minutes (30% to 80% SOC), whereas the EV80 PRO requires just 43 minutes to reach 80% SOC via fast charging, with standard AC slow charging taking 8 to 10 hours. Top speeds across the range span from 100 km/h (cargo variants) to 130 km/h (selected overseas specifications).
Underneath, the EV80 features MacPherson independent suspension at the front and a rigid axle with leaf springs and telescopic dampers at the rear. This setup balances cabin ride comfort with heavy-duty hauling capability, offering a maximum rated payload of up to 1,345 kg and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) between 3.9 and 4.18 tonnes. Stopping power is handled by four-wheel disc brakes with hydraulic power assistance, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) fitted as standard across the range. Drivers can toggle between ECO and SPORT drive modes on the EV80 PLUS and EV80 PRO, tailoring performance between energy efficiency and responsive power delivery. The turning radius ranges from 6.2 m on the EV80 PLUS to 7.5 m on the EV80 PRO, with a maximum gradability of 20%, ensuring nimble manoeuvrability in tight city streets. The EV80 PRO further benefits from a new "6-in-1" integrated electric drive system, offering superior efficiency, enhanced reliability, and reduced operating costs.
Inside, the EV80 stays true to its functional commercial vehicle roots. The EV80 PLUS can be equipped with a 10-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system running the brand's latest smart OS, supporting smartphone connectivity, voice commands, and media streaming. A dedicated mobile companion app enables remote door lock/unlock and reverse camera monitoring, while an intelligent fleet telematics system provides enterprise-grade tracking, dispatch management, and geo-fencing features. Standard equipment includes a multi-function steering wheel with integrated controls, cruise control, a high-output air-conditioning system, and rear parking sensors. Space-wise, the EV80 PLUS SWB variant boasts an internal height of up to 1.7 m and a cargo capacity of nearly 7.8 m³. The EV80 PRO LWB high-roof version expands this to an internal height of 1.9 m, an interior width of 1.8 m, and a massive cargo volume of over 11 m³, aided by a squared-off cargo box for optimal space utilisation. A low loading sill height of just 540 mm simplifies loading and unloading. Available seating configurations include a 3-seater panel van, a 5-seater crew van, 7-to-9-seater passenger variants, and up to an 18-seater bus, with rear doors opening up to 180°. The EV80 PRO also features a wide 1,295 mm sliding side door and 180-degree split rear barn doors, facilitating direct forklift loading to enhance operational efficiency.
In terms of passive safety, the EV80 utilises an integrated high-strength cage structure, with ultra-high-strength steel making up over 50% of critical load-bearing areas to meet European crash safety benchmarks. Active safety includes standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), effectively mitigating body sway and rollover risks at higher speeds. The wheel-integrated EPB automatically engages once the vehicle is switched off. Battery safety is central to the EV80's engineering: the pack incorporates automatic high-voltage cut-off upon impact, thermal and overload protection, and an IP68 dust and water resistance rating on the EV80 PRO for robust operation in harsh environments. A built-in battery thermal management system maintains optimal cell temperatures down to -30°C, ensuring reliable cold-start performance and consistent charging speeds. A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is available on higher trims. It is worth noting that early export units were not rated by Euro NCAP; while a driver airbag is a welcome standard inclusion in this commercial segment, Level 2 ADAS features are not offered, keeping the active safety setup focused on essential protection.
The EV80 has achieved landmark success in both domestic and international arenas. In China, SAIC MAXUS's commercial van lineup exceeded 75,000 units in total sales throughout 2022, defending its title as the top-selling single brand in the domestic light commercial vehicle segment. Overseas, the EV80 set three major milestones for Chinese-made electric wide-body vans: the first Chinese all-electric van sold in Europe; the first Chinese pure electric commercial vehicle to qualify for the UK government's £8,000 Plug-in Van Grant; and the first Chinese brand to be named "Light Commercial Vehicle Manufacturer of the Year" at the UK GreenFleet Awards in its category. By the end of 2023, cumulative overseas sales of SAIC MAXUS commercial vehicles surpassed 91,000 units, with developed markets across Europe, Australasia, and the Americas accounting for over 90% of the volume. Alongside stablemates such as the V80, V90, EV30, and EV90, the EV80 has become a preferred green fleet choice for global logistics and retail giants including DPD, Tesco, FedEx, DHL, and Coca-Cola. In 2020, SAIC MAXUS captured a 26.7% share of Norway's sub-3.5-tonne electric commercial vehicle market, ranking second overall with year-on-year retail sales surging by 570.6%. Automotive reviews from UK media noted the EV80's nimble urban driving dynamics, zero-emission advantages for inner-city delivery, versatile body configurations, and diesel-matching payload capacity, while pointing out shortcomings such as rapid motorway range drop-off, average cabin NVH insulation, and an ageing underlying platform. As an early pioneer for Chinese EVs entering developed commercial vehicle markets, the EV80 laid a solid technical and reputational foundation for SAIC MAXUS's subsequent electric offerings, including the EV30 and EV90.
