Model Overview

The Jetour Shanhai L6 is an all-new compact plug-in hybrid SUV under Chery Automobile's Jetour brand Shanhai series, positioned as "a fresh hybrid SUV choice for younger buyers". Officially launched on 25 August 2024, the lineup comprises 3 variants with an official price range of RM123,900 to RM144,900, backed by a lifetime warranty on the vehicle and core EV powertrain components for the first owner. Blending modern oriental aesthetics with Kunpeng hybrid technology, the Shanhai L6 centres on delivering style, substance, and peace of mind, squarely targeting younger buyers and family users. Measuring 4,630 mm long, 1,910 mm wide, and 1,684 mm (or 1,690 mm) tall, with a 2,720 mm wheelbase and a 560-litre standard boot capacity, its overall dimensions give it a solid edge within the segment.

Design Language

The Jetour Shanhai L6 showcases a "New Chinese Aesthetics" design philosophy, seamlessly merging traditional landscape motifs with contemporary styling. Up front, it features a closed-off grille flanked by sharp LED headlamp clusters, while pronounced bonnet creases add a sense of muscularity. Integrated matrix LED daytime running lights enhance its distinctive front-end signature. Along the sides, sleek character lines complement a floating roof design, accentuated by chrome window surrounds, blacked-out wheel arches, side skirts, and 20-inch wind-blade alloy wheels housing eye-catching turquoise brake calipers that sharpen its sporty appeal. Drawing inspiration from 384 traditional Chinese landscape hues, the model is available in six distinct exterior colours: Moonlight White, Vanilla Blue, Nebula Silver, Interstellar Black, Phantom Grey, and Bibo Cyan, ensuring standout road presence. Round the back, full-width LED taillights and a darkened rear bumper round off a clean and purposeful look.

Inside, the cabin takes on a minimalist layout available in Dynamic Grey or Racing Blue colourways. The interior is extensively upholstered in soft-touch materials, accented with natural grey ebony wood grain veneers and suede trim on the dashboard and door panels to create a plush, welcoming ambiance. A two-spoke multi-function steering wheel is paired with a steering column-mounted electronic gear selector, while the centre console incorporates a dedicated phone tray and wireless charging pad, thoughtfully balancing form and function.

Powertrain and Performance

The Shanhai L6 is powered by Chery's fifth-generation Kunpeng Super Hybrid C-DM system, which combines a 1.5TD dedicated hybrid engine with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The 1.5TD mill pushes out 115 kW (approx. 156 PS) and 220 Nm of torque, incorporating deep Miller cycle and 350-bar high-pressure direct injection technologies to achieve an impressive thermal efficiency of 44.5% to 45.18%, earning it the "China Heart" Top Ten Engines accolade. The front electric motor generates 150 kW (approx. 204 PS) and 310 Nm of torque. Power is transferred via a 1-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) to the front wheels. Battery duties are handled by a 19.43 kWh Gotion High-tech ternary lithium battery pack, delivering an all-electric range of 125 km (CLTC) and 91 km (WLTC). On a full tank and full charge, total combined range surpasses 1,400 km, with a WLTC combined fuel consumption rated as low as 1.25 L/100 km and a low-battery fuel consumption of just 5.2 L/100 km running on RON 92 petrol, significantly curbing running costs. In terms of performance, the 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in 7.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 180 km/h. A 6.6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging function is standard across all variants, effortlessly powering outdoor camping appliances, electric grills, and coffee machines. For charging, it supports 40 kW DC fast charging that juices the battery from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes, while an AC charge from 20% to full takes around 2.6 hours.

Chassis and Handling

Built on a front-wheel-drive architecture, the Shanhai L6 boasts a generous chassis setup for its class, featuring all-independent suspension with front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link setup as standard across the range; the multi-link rear suspension significantly improves rear wheel tracking, bump absorption, and cornering stability at speed, providing supple ride comfort and solid body control across city roads and twisty b-roads alike. Braking is handled by ventilated front discs and solid rear discs, with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) standard across the board. Stopping from 100 to 0 km/h takes just 36.6 metres with an ultra-quick 150 ms brake response time, delivering a progressive and confidence-inspiring pedal feel. It rides on 235/55 R19 tyres on 19-inch alloys. Selectable drive modes, including Standard, Eco, and Sport, effortlessly cater to both daily urban commutes and long-distance road trips.

Cabin and Equipment

In the tech department, the Shanhai L6 comes standard with a 9.2-inch full digital instrument cluster across all variants. Infotainment is handled by a 12.8-inch floating touchscreen on the base variant, upgraded to a 15.6-inch floating unit on mid-to-high specs, powered by an automotive-grade Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset (7nm process). The infotainment system supports 4G connected telematics, OTA software updates, Huawei HiCar smartphone integration, and an AI voice assistant, delivering swift voice prompts, responsive vehicle controls, and stutter-free multitasking. The seating features an ultra-plush "cloud sofa" design, with front seats offering 70° to 150° power adjustment, while the front passenger "Queen Seat" gains built-in massage functions and an electric leg rest. The top-tier ULTRA variant adds ventilated and heated front seats with memory function for the driver's seat; the MAX variant features electric adjustments for both front seats. Audiophiles will appreciate the 9-speaker Sony sound system, paired with 64-colour AI dynamic ambient lighting. Additional creature comforts include a 50W wireless smartphone fast charger, heated front seats, a climate-controlled centre armrest coolbox, panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate with memory height adjustment, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Cabin practicality is enhanced by 32 storage compartments throughout, along with 60:40 split-folding rear seats to expand luggage capacity.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the passive safety front, the Shanhai L6 features a high-strength steel safety cage structure comprising approximately 80% high-strength steel, with key structural points reinforced by hot-stamped steel for superior crash energy absorption, supported by 6 airbags as standard across the range (dual front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags). Battery protection is handled by the Guardian battery safety system with an IP68 waterproof rating, ensuring reliable protection even under severe water immersion. Active safety is comprehensive, with a Level 2 ADAS suite fitted as standard across all variants, incorporating full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). A 540° surround-view monitor with transparent chassis view comes standard, using 7 hazard alert systems and 4 active intervention functions to ease driver workload and enhance safety during tight parking and narrow street manoeuvres. The safety package is rounded off by standard electronic aids, including ABS, EBD, ESC, Traction Control (TCS), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and Hill Start Assist (HSA).

Market Performance and Reception

The Jetour Shanhai L6's sales performance followed a clear trajectory of "strong debut followed by a sharp drop". In the initial post-launch phase, monthly sales held firm at 1,784 units in August 2024, 1,458 units in September, and 1,536 units in October. However, sales plummeted as the calendar turned to 2025: slipping to 352 units in January 2025, 128 units in February, 121 units in March, and hitting a low of just 10 units in April, before lingering at low levels after a brief recovery to 55 units in June. In Q1 2026, cumulative sales reached just 692 units, with March sales dropping to 121 units. By April 2026, the model recorded zero retail sales in China. This decline mirrored broader headwind pressures facing the Jetour brand—in Q1 2026, Jetour's total retail deliveries in China (spanning Jetour, Shanhai, and Zongheng) dropped by 25.25% year-on-year, worsening from the 7.20% drop recorded in 2025. Internally, Jetour's aggressive model expansion (rolling out the Shanhai T1, Ziyouzhe, and Shanhai L7 in quick succession) cannibalised resources, while externally, resilient rivals like the Haval Dargo and Raptor, alongside strong new contenders like the Tai 3 and Tai 7, squeezed its market share.

In terms of customer feedback, the Shanhai L6 holds an impressive 4.81 out of 5 overall rating on Sohu Auto, outperforming 90% of segment rivals, with its EV range rating beating 95% of competitors; exterior styling scored 4.97, outshining 91% of class rivals; however, its cabin space score trailed 56% of segment rivals, reflecting how the compromise between rear passenger room and the sloping fastback roofline affected user experience for some owners. Positive feedback highlighted realistic EV range efficiency, responsive acceleration, standout styling, supreme seat comfort, and generous equipment levels; however, some owners pointed out that certain ADAS features were trimmed down on specific variants, resulting in real-world performance falling short of expectations. As the first plug-in hybrid SUV aimed at young lifestyle buyers under Jetour's "Travel+" strategy, the Shanhai L6 offered a well-rounded package, but internal lineup cannibalisation and stiff external competition curtailed its momentum, ultimately falling short of matching the runaway success of the Jetour Traveller.
