Jaguar E-PACE

2026-09-24 03:30:00

The Jaguar E-PACE is an entry-level compact luxury coupe SUV from the British marque. Making its global debut in 2017, the model was first locally assembled (CKD) in China by Chery Jaguar Land Rover in 2018. Following a brief hiatus due to lacklustre market reception, it was reintroduced to the domestic market in 2023. Currently on sale, the 2024 E-PACE lineup comprises 3 variants, with official retail pricing ranging between RM263,800 and RM321,000. Slotted below the F-PACE, its key segment rivals include the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA. In line with Jaguar's brand-wide pivot towards full electrification, the E-PACE was discontinued in European and North American markets in 2024, remaining in production and on sale exclusively in China via the Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture.

Design Language

The 2024 Jaguar E-PACE adopts the design cues of the global mid-life facelift. The front fascia features a prominent quadrilateral smoked grille with a signature diamond-mesh insert, flanked by oversized air intakes to deliver a distinctive three-section visual stance. Sleek "Double J-blade" LED headlamps offer an aggressive look, complemented by muscular power bulges on the bonnet that accentuate its athletic character. In profile, the SUV sports a sloping coupe-like roofline paired with muscular haunches, a full-length shoulder line running from nose to tail, and a signature rear quarter glass at the D-pillar to enhance rear-passenger visibility. The rear styling is taut and rounded, distinguished by slim, high-visibility LED taillights and dual exhaust finishers that reinforce its sporty persona. In terms of dimensions, the China-spec model measures 4,395 mm (4,411 mm in certain data sets) in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,648 mm (or 1,649 mm) in height, riding on a 2,681 mm wheelbase. For 2024, three new exterior paint shades have been introduced: British Racing Green, Silicon Silver, and Firenze Blue. The range-topping R-Dynamic Black Edition adds a gloss black exterior styling pack, 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels, and red brake calipers. Inside, the driver-centric wraparound cockpit houses an 11.4-inch curved HD central touchscreen powered by the latest InControl OS 2.0 infotainment system, alongside subtle Jaguar print accents embedded in the centre armrest cubby and centre console storage compartments.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2024 Jaguar E-PACE is available with two powertrain configurations, both fitted with a 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) system as standard. The lower and mid-tier variants (Youth Sport Edition and Progressive Sport Edition) are driven by a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-three petrol engine (PT153), outputting 147 kW (200 PS) and 280 Nm of torque. This unit is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission (8AT) in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup. It completes the 0-100 km/h century sprint in 9.9 seconds, reaches a top speed of 210 km/h, and returns a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 7.99 L/100 km. The flagship R-Dynamic Black Edition steps up to a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four Ingenium petrol engine (PT204), producing 183 kW (249 PS) and 365 Nm of torque, with max torque available from just 1,300 rpm. Power is transferred via a 9-speed automatic transmission (9AT) paired with an on-demand all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.0 seconds, achieves a top speed of 221 km/h, and posts a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 9.23 L/100 km. Both engines run on RON 95 petrol or higher.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinning the Jaguar E-PACE is a suspension setup comprising front MacPherson struts and an integral rear multi-link independent arrangement. Its Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) is specifically calibrated to deliver sharp agility alongside high-speed tracking stability. The top-grade R-Dynamic Black Edition's on-demand AWD system incorporates an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch centre differential and boasts a class-leading wading depth of up to 500 mm. Also standard is Jaguar Drive Control, offering 4 selectable drive modes—including an AdSR/Snow mode—which dynamically adjust steering weight and throttle mapping to suit varying terrain conditions. Braking is handled by front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, complemented by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold. Kerb weight is rated at 1,820 kg for the 1.5T FWD model and 1,955 kg for the 2.0T AWD variant.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside, the 2024 E-PACE comes standard with an 11.4-inch HD touchscreen infotainment display running InControl OS 2.0. Driver instrumentation includes a 7.0-inch multi-info display on the base variant, upgraded to a 12.3-inch high-definition Interactive Driver Display (digital instrument cluster) on mid-to-high specifications. The system natively supports Apple CarPlay, Baidu CarLife connectivity, and intelligent voice command recognition. Convenience and comfort appointments across the range include a fixed panoramic glass roof, powered tailgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a cabin air purification system with PM2.5 filtration. Audiophiles can specify an optional Meridian premium sound system on the range-topping R-Dynamic Black Edition. Upholstery-wise, higher-spec models receive genuine leather seat trim. Cargo capacity is rated at 494 litres in standard guise, expandable to a cavernous 1,170 litres with the rear seats folded down. Notably, seat heating is omitted as standard equipment across the board.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The Jaguar E-PACE provides a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features. Standard active safety kit across the lineup includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Cruise Control (Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go is available as an option or standard on higher trims), Auto Brake Hold, and Hill Launch Assist. Higher variants gain Blind Spot Assist, which monitors adjacent lanes and applies corrective steering torque to avert potential side-swipe collisions. Passive safety gear is extensive, comprising dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). For Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), entry-level models feature Level 1 functionality, while mid-to-high variants can be upgraded with a Level 2 ADAS suite. Additionally, a 360-degree surround-view camera (on selected variants) and front/rear parking sensors are equipped to aid close-quarter manoeuvring.

Market Performance and Industry Reception

Ever since its local production commenced in 2018, the Jaguar E-PACE has struggled to gain significant market traction in China. Full-year registrations reached only 841 units in 2024, declining further to 354 units across 2025, with 2026 Q1 sales dipping to a mere 14 units. Monthly tallies hovered at low levels, recording just 51 units in April 2025, 44 units in June 2025, and 70 units in July 2025, with first-quarter deliveries in 2025 totalling 97 units. Market analysts attribute its muted performance to inferior rear legroom and less competitive in-car tech compared to mainstream rivals like the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Furthermore, extensive dealer discounts placed its transaction price dangerously close to the brand's own XEL executive sedan, resulting in severe internal cannibalisation and ambiguous positioning. In July 2024, Jaguar officially announced the axing of five combustion models, including the E-PACE. While the baby Jag has exited Western markets, it continues to be assembled and sold in China under the Chery Jaguar Land Rover banner. As a stopgap model steering Jaguar from pure combustion power towards an all-electric future, the E-PACE bore the marque's entry-level SUV ambitions, yet bore witness to Jaguar's market slide from an annual peak of 36,000 units in China to the fringes of the premium segment.
